View Full Version : Nintendo Leak Reveals Wiiwards! -April Fool's Joke-
Oh dear. I'm sure there's an ex-Nintendo employee sat at home right now feeling very sorry for himself.
In a move very similar to what happened at Ubisoft a year or two ago, a Nintendo employee has accidentally made a private FTP public. Most of the articles on the FTP were about items revealed during the GDC, including The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and some DSi tidbits, but in a folder marked E3, there was information about a new feature called "Wiiwards".
"Wiiwards", so it's claimed, are Nintendo's equivalent to Microsoft's Achievements and Sony's Trophies. At present, only Nintendo games are going to be compatible with Wiiwards, although third party developers will be given the option as to whether or not to include them in their games, or patch them into existing titles.
Also in the folder were a couple of images showing off the Wiiwards Channel, which is where you'll be able to view your various Wiiwards. They can be seen below:

There isn't any announcement as to when we're going to be able to download the Wiiwards Channel and start unlocking achievements on Wii games, but I guess we'll be told a lot more at E3.
Anywho, I do remember seeing an article earlier today, but I can't remember for the life of me whereabouts it was, and a Google search isn't bringing anything up either, so I can only presume that Nintendo have proper shat themselves and ordered any and all mention of this FTP leak to be covered up, in order to save themselves even more embarrassment.
Still, what do you reckon? Are you looking forward to being able to gaining achievements on Wii games? Or do you think this is a bandwagon that Nintendo and the Wii shouldn't have jumped on?
Looks very similar to Sony's trophies, which is no bad thing I guess. I do have to wonder though, what's the point? Who are you gonna show these to? Hopefully you might actually get something for them.
NO! No No No No No No.
Fuck off Nintendo ><
If you'd introduced this at launch I may have loved you like...a...lover...
These days I can't bear to look at the 360 because of those fucking achievements...they've finally drove me round the bend, hence my wanting a DS. I want fun, not points to enlarge my E-Cock.

For the love of God do not let Rayne see this!
It does feel a bit like bandwagon-ing in an attempt to bring gamers back to the Wii that no-longer see it as the console that caters for them. Well Ninty, it's not worked on this customer.
Edit: Nevermind he's seen it. >_< I always take too long to reply...
On the otherhand with this and proper SD support at least it seems like Nintendo are listening to people... by adding things that should have been available at launch.

XD He saw alright.
It is a bandwagon jump, Nintendo have never really cared about this before, right? Their emphasis has always been on fun and experience. It seems like a cheap way to try please western gamers.
How dare Nintendo try to please people, what a bunch of twats they are.

Alright Rek, you make a good point. We are all being a tad ungrateful, but couldn't they have done something a little bit more substantial like improving online gameplay or develop more exclusive games like the ones that were announced at launch that made us quiver with excitement?

But we don't know they haven't done that. Well except for improving online gameplay, that's never happening ever (though at least it lets me update without having to fuck around for hours).
Yes this would be abit shit if it's their only announcement at E3 but I doubt it is.
All the more reason to 100% my games!

Wii achievements? That sounds brilliant.

No no, Wiiwards.

No no, Wiiwards.
Sorry I don't believe in shit puns.
In my perspective, achievements ruin games.
I'll never be able to pick up a 360 game without wondering what the achievements are, if a new zelda came out with impossible ones, I wouldn't but it.
It's just feels like it's going against what Nintendo stand for, even worse is that it's far more likely they'll be included in future systems.

I've always seen the Wii as the console without achievements/trophies, which I preferred; made me focus on my 360 achievements. With "Wiiwards," I've become overly stressed and go batshit insane (ok, maybe not) because I have more Wii games than 360 (more than 50% of the Wii games I have are crap). They're just trying to boost the replay value.
Want to boost replay value? Make good games. Duh...
Don't get me wrong, there are good games for Wii, it's just that I feel there aren't enough...stupid third-party abuse.
Edit by Sherlock: Fixed for greater justice. Man. You can cuss here. You don't have to self-censor shit. Or fuck. Or cunt. Etc. <_<
Woah what the hell? There's nothing wrong with them, you people are just batshit insane. Don't like them? Ignore them, simple as.
Y'all just being creepy obsessive.

Calm down dear.
It'll be interesting to see what ones Mario Party 8 and Strikers have.

It pisses me off having scores and percentages stare at me when I switch my system on though, I'm fairly OCD with my stuff so I'll always want 100% or 100% completion or an even gamerscore.
To be honest I still wouldn't play the Wii with these, so it really makes no difference -_- but if they put them on DS there shall be bonfires.

For me, what it is about these systems is it dosn't seem far off the way they get toy rabbits to coax those dogs around the race tracks. It's a simple little thing pandering to the most basic of instincts, but the animals never seem to question the fact they're being duped and are all too happy to chase that thing around and around to their hearts content without realising their indulgence is only perpetuating an unending, fundamentally unsatisfying and inconclusive cycle.
So I suppose the fact my ego likes to think of itself as a bit cleverer than a whippet stops me ever surrendering to these kind of incentives.
I've thought about this too much.

I've never been too fussed with them myself either. Im on my third xbox at the mo, not had it too long but i've got 20 games on there and only 2500 points. I don't go out of my way for them. This wouldn't interest me.

On the bright side you probably hold the record for having the lowest score to 20 games :P
The games I buy (Dynasty Warriors, Disney games ((Because I fucking love Disney, yes)) shell out the points, regardless of whether I'm aiming for them or not
OK, I've got something to say:
You've all been had. This was my attempt at an April Fool's prank, and I would say it's been fairly successful, judging by the responses. But why did I post it yesterday? Allow me to explain:
Traditionally, as you may or may not know, April Fool's jokes need to be done before midday, and as I work during the day, I wouldn't have had the time to get the prank in before the deadline, so I improvised and posted it yesterday instead. I had also intended for Eurogamer to get in on the fun today, but they sent me a message saying they couldn't, and don't usually do jokes themselves. Ah well.
As for the images, I got a friend of mine to Photoshop the Wiiwards Channel onto a stock image of the Wii's main menu, and the actual Channel itself was based on Sony's Trophies layout. The idea of the images being artist's impressions of how the channel would look negated any claim of "OMG SHOPPED!"
Just for the record, I was also going to announce the reveal of Mario Paint 2 on Wii and DS, a story I wrote for another forum a couple of years ago, and tie that into this same article. However I thought that'd sound too obvious so I left it out. I had also written some Wiiwards out, with descriptions, and here they are for you to have a look at:

Haha, I thought the wiiwards screen was too similar to the PS3's trophies. Though I didn't think it was you being premature.

You posted it too early for a joke though.
As I said, I had to do it early, else I would've missed the traditional window for the joke, and I wanted to be traditional :(

Lol, that would've been good.
Adding an extra bit to the title of this thread so people don't come in reading it and expecting it to be truth. I'll keep the thread open though, so feel free to continue discussing "Wiiwards" and whether or not they would actually work.
