Ok this is how it goes I'll say a year then I will name my favorite video game of that year and leave a comment on it.
I'll start first....1992
"Street Fighter II" - SNES
http://i40.tinypic.com/nd6ecx.gif
Hands down the best game that year. The summer of 1992 was about SFII. I still remember all the awesome battles I had with my cousins & friends. Once and while my cousin and myself go at it to see whos still the best at SFII. Ryu vs. Blanka..
2006
Need For Speed Underground 2 - Ps2
Was the only game I thought of, The Colourful Cars, The Pretty Music, The Sparkly Lights, The speed, It was just the best when racing through traffic avoiding cars at speeds that makes you go so fast, everything looks slowed down. The Ability to customize your cars was what kept me driving in style, making me want to keep racing, The thrill of being neck and neck with another maxed out car when you're seconds away from the finish, you turn on your NoS and vrrooom you win that intense race, and in the distance you see the other racers crashing into cars, Tottaled. The speed on the Drag Race made my heart beat harder, The Drift Race, made me smirk at showing off my skills in Turning. That Is What Made Need For Speed Underground 2, My Game Of The Year.

SPORE has to be THE game of last year.
I can't think that there was ever a game that allowed for this much creativity. Sure there are a lot of problems with the game, mostly due to EA (grrr), but until you get bored of the space stage, the gameplay remains fun, and there's no end to the things you can build on it!
If you don't have it, get it! NOW O.o
September 9, 1999 in north america.
Sonic Adventure 1.- SEGA Dreamcast (originally)
was one of the first games that came out for Dreamcast and was the forerunner of the current sonic games, this game was fun and was the first game I played when I bought my console that was the special edition of Sonic, this was one of the games that gave me the challenge in time, I had to get all the emblems to see the real end game, in my opinion was the best game of the year.
Hmm so many games on my mind
Daytona usa 2:Battle on the edge 1998
I never stop spending money on this game its just fantastic great soundtrack,3 cars to select from, the courses are outstanding but mostly id prefer the forest dome:biggrin:(the most beautiful course in the game). But anyway id prefer the 2nd daytona better.

2001
PSO
the world changed that year
1999 - Pokemon Red (EU)
A generation of gamers were born on the christmas of that year :P Nintendo's Gameboy was catapulted to untouchable status because of that game.
I remember being so excited, far from just an easy cash in the game had plenty of depth. Not that I cared about that when I was a kid, I just wanted to train my Charmander!!

How can you call it a cash in? The game came first.

1996 - NiGHTS into Dreams
I've been through why I like this game so much, so many times that I think one more won't hurt. Great music, great gameplay and very addictive. The levels themselves are also very well designed. I still play this game to this date and still find it as good today as the first time I played it.

"Gunstar Heroes" - Genesis

They were a lot great games that year (1993) but none came close as awesome like Gunstar Heroes. Everything about this game is perfect 10/10. The best 2-player action/shooter of all-time!!

Thirded.
I. Fecking. Love. That. Game.
And I mean like actually worship it. The remake (Gunstar "Future" or "Super" Heroes, dpeending on where you are) was a fairly good attempt, but nowhere near as good as the original. I'd love to see a full 3D remake, done well. It'd rival Project Altered Beast.
I even made my own avatar for it:

If anyone else wants one, I'll be happy to make one. Just give me the specifics - hair colour, spandex colour, pad colour, extra features, pose, and which gunstat (red/blue) to use as a base.

1991
It's a tied between "Sonic the Hedgehog" & "Actraiser"
http://i40.tinypic.com/34462qe.jpg
http://i39.tinypic.com/otoyh4.png
I really couldn't just pick one so I chose both. Super Mario World had nothing on Sonic 1 only Actraiser. Both games had excellent graphics, awesome soundtracks, great controls and the best gameplay of 1991.
I'd say Super Mario World was far superior to Sonic 1 -_-
Sonic 1 is fantastic until you reach the 2nd area and then I just...lose interest  Super Mario world can sort of keep me entertained for ages.

1997: ISS 64. Up until then I'd played stuff such as Fifa and Italia '90 that was alright in a frivolous way to waste half an hour. But this was the first proper, modern footy game with gameplay to match its presentation as far as I can tell. The 3D fifa's were sluggish, unresponsive and generally a disgrace to the great heritage of the 2D versions, and the Actua Soccer games felt a bit too fast and arcadey. This had a beautifully deep pattern of play to it and the animaton was so smooth. Amazing game, god knows how many hours I spent playing it.
2001: Worms World Tour. I used to play the first worms on the PS1 with mates on and off but it wasn't that popular. This one was. Must have been the crazier weapons like the concrete donkey and that making the difference. Still play it occasionally, up until about a year ago it was still the most played game amongst my mates and the competition is always fierce; skills with the grenade and ninja rope are praised and it's considered cheap to use stuff like the homing rocket too much. Hope Team 17 release another good 2D game soon, the DS and 360 ones felt a bit iffy to me.
Problem with the 360/DS Worms was that a lot of features were missing. I had Worms 2 on the DS and it was pretty decent,, Worms on the 360 just didn't have a large enough selection of weapons (No Holy Hand Grenade...:()

Aint it. And the ninja rope was gimped. And you couldn't change the bounce of your grenades. And there was no Sally Army. And there was no Mad Cow...etc.
I could weep.

Heh, Armageddon was still the best version I've played. I tend to lose patience with worms though, some players take so long to move D: particuarly online, players will wait 95 seconds before they do something, figuring you'll get bored and quit.

Ah, classic Worms. Those were true games indeed. I had most of them on PC.
I loved the original Worms game, spent ages on it with mates. Couldn't get into World Tour as much though, multiplayer was still a blast, but singleplayer was terrible... least on the Dreamcast the AI took forever to take their turn.

The PS1 version fixed that.

^This man speaks the truth. ^_^
It may be 2009's, since it's being remade. XD
@Topic:
1999: Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast) and Street Fighter Alpha 3 (Playstation)
When I had the Dreamcast, there was one game that made my 5 years joyful: Sonic Adventure.
It was (and still is) in my opinion the best 3D Sonic game to date. Newer Sonic games are always based on the Adventure style and sometimes becomes tiring (examples: Sonic Failed-Gen and Black Knight), but SA1 beats them all. Great gameplay, an really understanding story and really playable characters...except for Big. >_<
Now, to my second GOTY of 1999, Street Fighter Alpha 3. It was the third greatest SF-related game that I've ever played (the other two will be mentioned in other posts). Great characters, returning ones, and lotsa good gameplay. The PSP version, SFA3 MAX, was also good, because it featured almost EVERY character that was featured in the re-releases of Alpha 3. And included a new character, Ingrid.

1999: Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast)I've still been meaning to get that game. It's pretty cheap on Amazon; probably get a VMU alongside the game. So far, I've only played (and own a physical copy :P) of SA2 Battle (Gamecube), but I really want to play SA1.
And a few posts back, I agree with Gunstar Heroes. Played it on an emulator, and my first reaction was "OMG SO MANY BULLETS!" It's awesome.

Thought so. I don't agree with it being the best fighter of that era either, not by a long shot. A messy game with loads of cheap characers, I'm sure the only reason so many Americans cum their pants over it is because of the comic book license it has. Americans are always suckers for a license, just look at the success of the Kingdom Hearts games.

^ I loved it but to be honest I can't think of many other fighters that I played during that time to compare it to. I was probably still playing soul caliber more at the time.

"Soul Calibur"- Dreamcast
http://i41.tinypic.com/vo7mvm.jpg
A perfect 10. The Best Fighting Sequel since Street Fighter II also the Best 3-D Fighting Game of the 1990's. The graphics in the Dreamcast verison made the arcade verison look like a PSX game. I love the soundtrack of Soul Calibur "Welcome back to the Stage of History". 10 years later it's still my favorite 3-D fighting game.
Many years of action many games.. :) I will post several times is that ok? haha :P

"Mega Man 2" - NES

20 years ago Capcom released one the greatest sequels ever (before SFII that is). My favorite Mega Man game of all time!! Everything about MM2 is awesome.
You know what I'm gonna play Mega Man 2 right now. Bring it on Dr. Wily!!

1998 - Ocarina of Time.
Probably one game that will never bore me, even if I only got as far as attempting to claim the horse, lol.

Heh, it took me a year to figure out you had to make Epona leap over the farm cliff wall thing. Until then I would win the horse, get confused, angry, bored then reset...then repeat :P
I was fine with the jumping and knew that was what I had to do, when I eventually won the horse. I hated that race!

"Metal Gear Solid" - PSX
http://i11.tinypic.com/4ptz5af.jpg
Metal Gear Solid and Zelda ruled 1998 but if I had to choose one it has to be Metal Gear Solid. Being Solid Snake is bad ass. Everything about this game is perfect. This game was (still is) an event like no other at the time.

I've never played the original of the Solid games though so I can't give much of a comment here.

Metal Gear Solid 3 would get my vote but still a good pick.
It's the closest call I could think of, but MGS4 is juuuuust slightly better than MGS. Metal Gear Solid it certainly the best game of 98 though :P

Jet Set Radio Future
2002
This game was released one day after my birthday, and I'd never had so much fun in a platformer before. Sega and Smilebit blew away my expectations, even if all JSRF really did was add some remixed soundtracks, enormous levels, more intuitive custom tags, larger list of playable characters, wicked 2 player.. etc.
The game was just fun. The only downer is that there's no online, but ah well, can't knock a game for something it doesn't have.

Wow 1996 was truly a year of awesome games like NiGHTS, Super Mario 64, Crash Bandicoot, Guardian Heroes, Twisted Metal 2, Dragon Force, Wave Race 64, Street Fighter Alpha 2 but to me everybody was just blown away by Resident Evil. Got to love that awful voice acting but the game was fun.
2009 - Demon's Souls.
Yep, I doubt anything coming out within the next few months will beat Demon's Souls. Certainly no RPGs coming out this year that stand a chance.

1986 -Outrun
Yu Suzuki is a definite favorite of mine. This game just had always had that cool idea of getting in a crazy nice car and just driving as far as ya want with a pretty girl. Outrun 2 is also in my top 10 sequels of all time list.

"Goldeneye 007" - N64
http://i48.tinypic.com/2e54dae.jpg
1997 was another great year for video games with the released of Goldeneye 007 & Final Fantasy VII. Well it was a close race between these two giants but I got to say Goldeneye is better. My 1st favorite FPS for a console. Actually I wasn't a big fan FPS back then. I didn't like Doom nor Wolfenstein 3D but Goldeneye change everything. Awesome gameplay, great graphics (for the that time), excellent sound & music, great controls for the N64. To tell ya'll the truth it's better than the movie too. I would love to play this game again. :)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/91/Spyro_2_-_Ripto%27s_Rage%21_Coverart.png
Just at the turn of the Millennium, Insomniac games released this little jewel. They gave the game more of a plot, made Spyro more of an actual character, and threw in a delightfully hilarious supporting cast. Moneybags ftw. XD
Spyro 1 is a classic favorite, and Spyro 3 had the most "game," but Spyro 2 was fun, fantastic and freakin' hilarious. I always get a laugh a minute in this game, and I still love it today.
I also have a collectible edition, with a special reflective foil cover on the instructions... ;)
