View Full Version : Why Are There No Good Game Bands?

Now I'm just about to reach the ripe old age of 23 I feel a new maturity about myself, and I find myself liking heavy metal less and less. That's not to say I hate it, you understand... hell, my new favourite band is Chickenfoot (http://www.chickenfoot.us).

The thing is, I think it's equal parts change in myself and sheer terribosity in metal. This, very much, translates to video game bands.

Just be aware, this isn't a hate list, it's a criticism list of the top four.

NESkimos: Terrible production. Do they ever play a single chord?

Minibosses: Same as NESkimos, though not that bad.

Powerglove: Good production, but UGH! This over-the-top fretwankery is what's mainly putting me off metal. How on earth do you get the Power Rangers theme wrong?

Megadriver: From what I've heard, these are considered the best. Why? They have a couple of good ideas, but it sounds like they were recorded in World War II or something. And way way WAY too many pinch harmonics!

One main thing these have in common is that there is way too much guitar. I wanted to start a game band a few years ago, and a keyboard player was a must at the time!

I didn't even know there were game bands. What do they play, covers of old game themes or new music through megadrive chipsets?!

Never heard of The Black Mages? They do hard rock versions of various Final Fantasy themes, and have once or twice branched out into doing their own stuff, and they're pretty good.

Well worth a listen, if you ask me.

Drats, you beat me to it.
You HAVE to listen to these guys - if you've ever played ANY final fantasy game (which no reputable gamer hasn't) you'll find a song you know and you'll love the remix. I promise.
In fact I'm off to listen to them right now...

I'd recommend listening to them even if you've never played a FF game, because the music is good in it's own right.

Also helps that the original composer for most of the tracks is actually in the band himself.

I know it's a little necro, but I'm a mod and I'm allowed to do it :D

Anyway, I've just found out that Dave McPhearson, lead singer of English rock band InMe, actually has a side project called A Devil's Devil, which has a few tracks based on video games and such like, and on the MySpace page.

Anywho, here's the link, so take a listen to the tracks on there: Clicky (http://www.myspace.com/adevilsdevil).
