View Full Version : The New Mega Drive
So, now that it's been released for a good month or so, does anyone own one?
If so, any reviews? :D
If you haven't yet heard of this, essentially it's the portable Mega Drive but...not so portable! It has 15 built in games and a slot to play any old Mega Drive carts you may still have lying around ;)
Mixed reports but apparently it's mutli-region, it's certainly portable and most of all...it's crazy expensive

The reviews on Amazon make it sound crap so I think I'll just get an old model one Mega Drive when I get round to snagging one.
Yeah, those reviews don't sound too promising. It's a shame really, as Blaze have made some good SEGA branded mini-consoles for a while now, but with problems like those being reported, it can't be too good.
I'll make do with Ultimate Collection on 360 thanks, although I could do with a sequel with some other games on, maybe some popular 3rd party exclusives?
I wouldn't trust those user reviews myself.
Hanging around the Retro Gamer forums I've heard some pretty positive reviews. The handheld MD was pretty decent, so you never know

With my old MD knackered, it looks tempting but... *jabs at computer* I happen to have Fusion. And all the roms i get for it are games I already own so... as far as I'm aware, I'm not doing anything illegal.

Disregarding the legality of it I've still never gotten on with pirating; playing some dubiously acquired Rom while hunched over a P.C. is no substitue for having that classy slab of black Sega plastic under your telly.

I've never had any problems with quality, and since my MD did a backflip and killed itself, it's meant I can play all my classic favourites without having to shell out for new stuff that might not even work. The controls are manually set, so it's easy to get an arrangement you're comfortable with. In fact, I'm more comfortable playing sonic with my keyboard, with the controls "reversed" (a, b, c, on left hand, arrow keys on right), than I ever was playing it with a PS2 controller.
But that's just me, and this is starting to sound a little too much like advertising for my liking...

I do prefer my MD MK 1 more though. I have noticed some differences in both but I need to get another MK 1 as a back-up.

It just seems a bit moot getting this seeing how it probably is cheaper to buy an original off ebay etc.
Opinions of this seem to vary. I think if you just like your genesis for a quick blast it will do but every genuine sega fan that knows there stuff I know has nothing but bad things to say about this.
I think it's an utterly awesome idea and a great kick to the Mega Drive fanbase :P if anything shows it's still avid, it's a new console.
I do think it's a little too expensive...the built in games are funky but that doesn't justify fairly poor build quality.

No console is built to last these days.
I havent heard of it but any way sounds pretty cool . One more thing my PSN is xing369 ill add any one just send me a mesage ^^ And befor i forget SEGA really did a good job on their new Genesis Collection hands up !!!
I've heard people saying that this new machine has problems running some games, both graphics and sound issues. One good thing I've heard is that it forces PAL games to run in 60htz but you still get problems.

:decide:i was given one a few weeks ago, 1 of the worst things about it is the audio, only 1 phono (white) means mono sound, so if you have a megadrive 2 with scart cable with stereo stick with that, playing sonic and knuckles (in built) or any other sonic game, the sound effects like ring collecting sound different like low pitched, music sounds slow as well, gunstar heroes and dragons fury dont display properly, a few glitches like missing backgrounds on dragon fury, also cant lock on sonic3 and sonic and knuckles, plus points its small about the size of 2 ds lites on top of each other closed.
I've heard that Gunstar doesn't work because it was originally designed to exploit and use everything the Mega Drive had to give, whereas the new MD is just an emulator and doesn't have the same exploits.
I'm sure I saw this in Chips yesterday when I was looking for games. Walked passed it, glanced at it, didn't bother with it. I prefer my MegaDrive II and MegaCD setup. ^_^
Bought this a just after it was released and have tried quite a few games on it. Seems like 90 of the "older" MD games wont work at all. Not even all the newer games work. The built in games also seem to run on a lower
resolution the normal, might just be my imagination:)
Recommend people to shop a used original MD instead if they really want one!

99.9% of my old cartridges work on this console,
That put me off right there. See, I have a game or two that, like Rayne mentioned about Gunstar, are designed to exploit the console's power. Specifically, one of them i sF-22 Interceptor, which, for those of you who don't know, uses FULLY 3D POLYGON GRAPHICS. Even though it was launched in 1991. I kid you not, this game used poly rendering. Anyone who's ever tried to play the ROM on an emulator knows why you need 100% original Genesis architecture for it to work. :P
