A comment in another topic got me thinking about the various game series that, although great, may be over staying their welcome now.

So! Which franchises do you think deserve their place in the development studios for the foreseeable future and which do you should be taken behind the tool shed as the children look away and papa loads up his trusty old shotgun? And why your opinion? Discuss.

Okay. But why? (I was kind of hoping we'd get some debates going here)

Final Fantasy - The RPG's have carried the name for too long, Square need to drop it completely and just focus on individual RPG's with unique aspects. New FF games are like that to a degree but as long as they carry that name, they carry all the history too.

Zelda - The games have lost all imagination, recycling the same old puzzles and mechanics, it's simply no fun to play any more.

Mario Kart - It reached it's peak with Mario Kart DS, Mario Kart Wii just managed to prove how dull and awkward the series has become. Short of creating yet more vehicles and gimicks there's little they could do to justify a sequel.

Super Smash Brothers - Again, this series peaked with Melee, brawl added clone characters and over-powered weapons. Sucking the skill out of a game and replacing it with luck just isn't fun. A sequel would struggle to change anything radically and as for characters, just how many are left at the bottom of that Nintendo barrel?

Halo - The series quickly lost it's way with Halo 2, I'm not ashamed to admit Halo 3's story was terrible. The Multiplayer was flawless for 3 but from my perspective I just don't want them to butcher a great story and universe any further.

Devil May Cry (After an explosive and award winning 5th :P) - Awesome game but it's showing its age and getting old, DMC4 did little in terms of improvement (in fact many would argue it took a few steps back) I'd like to see one sequel but I wouldn't want the series to drag on.

Call of Duty - Surely I don't need to explain this? How many fucking wars can they cover?

Sonic the Hedgehog - Again, do I need to explain? The series has totally lost it's way, the games simply aren't fun anymore. I'd love to see a full fledged re-vamp but if we're going down the spin-off gimmick route? Just kill him off.

Street Fighter - It achieved perfection with IV, opening it up to the hardcore and the casual, adding extra characters and stages would be great but a large percentage of the new audience jumped on because of the hype and stayed because of the gameplay. There's little they could add gameplay wise to tempt them to purchase another.

Better? :P

While I don't think they should kill Sonic completely, he sure could need a vacation. 3D sonic games should either be killed, or be short, fast, and cool download games. Dimps should keep making the 2D ones.

Pokemon! It seriously need to die. It's been nothing more than a cash-cow for years, repeating the same thing over and over again.

Mostly agree with Rayne on the other topics.

Man, how could I forget Pokemon?! Uber agree, unless the battle system gets an over-haul, I can't see anything convincing me to buy another.

The Street Fighter arguement is absurd. SF4 perfection? Debatable to put it mildly. I'm certainly not alone in thinking 4 isn't anywhere near as good as 3rd Strike, and who knows if they had the balls to mix up the fighting mechanics aproperly what else Capcom could do with the series. There is so much they could add to the gameplay - I can't believe the statement saying they couldn't- Street Fighter 4 is relatively rudimentary compared to a lot of fighting games: adding more characters would be the mistake, there's a bloated roster of about 30 in it already, it's going to take me ages to learn all the match-ups as it is.

Not only that, but the series has a history of incremental tweaks here and there. There was 7, I think, revisions of Street Fighter 2, 4 Alpha games and 3 versions of the third game. Even the version of 4 is quite a change from the arcade game. It's part of what honed the series' gameplay so well. Think how crap it would be if they had stopped at Street Fighter 3: Next Generation.

So basically: just give me more Streeet Fighter. 4 was okay, but I want something better!

Call of Duty - Surely I don't need to explain this? How many fucking wars can they cover?

Except they (Infinity Ward) stopped covering a proper war with IV. What Infinity Ward need to do is drop the Call of Duty name like it looked like they originally had (http://www.digitalunrestcomic.com/index.php?date=2009-03-23), and publisher to be honest.

Metal Gear Solid - While I could go with the obvious "Cause 4 was shit" I'd rather go with "Cause 4 wrapped up the terrible story to something of a conclusion" but we all know while Kojima is Konami's bitch that aint gonna happen.

Edit: Resident Evil - Cause 5 was shit.

If you're an MGS fan and you can appriciate what it does, you'll see there's an amazing ammount of potential left. By leaving Snake and Otacon behind you leave the gates open for a Raiden cameo and a new cast of characters. Continue FoxHound 10 years after MGS4, Kojima and his team has proved time again that they can create masterful stories and the MGS universe is so interesting I'd like to see it used again :3

Resident Evil, I sort of agree. 5 was not scary so it became an action game, an action game with the RE set up is a fail. I want to see Leon, tighter controls, scarier setting...

In actual fact I just want more Resident Evil 4 :P

It doesn't need to be Metal Gear Solid any more though, drop the Solid, make a seperate series.

In the same universe with a few references and cameos from other characters. It'd be a great way to get new comers into the series too...90% of the MGS4 haters hated it (understandably) because they had no idea what was going on

For me it was because I assumed I bought a game, not a movie.

Making it friendly to new players would be a must, MGS3 was, but more specifically Metal Gear Solid was if you had never played Metal Gear 1 or 2, which was good with 2 not getting a release outside Japan... actually I don't think either of the proper versions did... but yea, Solid was still very easy to understand without prior knowledge of the series.

Yeah, I started with Metal Gear Solid, what it did right was allowing to choose whether you wanted to learn about the character's pasts, like Gray Fox.

First time I played through he was some freaky psycho ninja, second time around I actually realized what he was, which was really interesting.

Same could maybe be said for MGS2, playing as Raiden you have to stop a big bomb, that's all you really need to focus on.

What about DOA and Soul Caliber?
The latter has lowered to using cameos, and the former... well I don't think we want to talk about what DOA's done...

After you forgive and forget the crap Star Wars cameo, Soul Calibur IV was actually a fantastic game.

And the DLC "Scandal" or whatever, dunno, played the demo and it felt like any other shit 3D fighter so I never bothered.

Dead or Alive isn't all that bad for a fighting series actually. OK, take the bouncing tits out of it and judge it by its technical merits and it's quite in depth.

Granted, it's never gonna be on the same grounds as Virtua Fighter or Tekken (a crossover that should officially happen), but I reckon it takes a very much deserved 3rd place.

How would a Virtua Fighter/Tekken crossover work on any level other than a vacuous exercise in fan service?

As for Dead or Alive, it's an interesting shout considering Itagaki left the company after the 4th but you could also say Tecmo should be given one more chance to re-imagine the series under new leadership before they do entomb it into eternal obscurity (as if they ever would though!).

I've never been one of these critics of the games myself though: quite enjoyed the 4th game on the 360 and when there aren't that many 3D fighters on the market to begin with fans need all the releases we can get these days; I'd probably just have the games in 3rd place over Soul Calibur aswell.

Gavvie

Yeah, it'd be fan service, but it would probably be one of the most technical Tekken games ever released XD

That's right, I think some DLC costumes you had to buy through the marketplace, however they were all on the disc. You were basically paying for content that you already owned, which was an insult, though SC wasn't the first or last game to pull that crap.

I think the game had a lot of depth, great characters and truck loads of customisation :D but then again I played it for friggin hours so...

It certianly weren't the first game to rip people off by witholding content: Namco had already perfected the art in Katamari and Ridge Racer 5.

And of course more recently Street Fighter IV.

Ah yes, I forgot about Street Fighter. I really should mop up and get the rest of those costumes at some point..

Much as I enjoyed it at the beginning, I think the Rabbids sub-series of Rayman should be killed off. There's only so much DAHHHHHHHHH the world can handle.

I like the Rabbids, though I haven't bothered getting any of the games since I don't care about mini-game collections. Might pick up the new one though as it's supposed to be an adventure game or something.

Just to clear this up: they did actually release a few things on DLC that weren't available on the disc, and those that were were noted on the item description.
I'm just getting eternally annoyed trying to unlock the stuff off th disc.

I read somewhere that after the newest Rabbids game comes out, they will go back to focusing on Rayman.

The Sims. The Sims is great and the Sims3 is super fun, but they should stop here before it goes down the drain.

Bad Enough EA is abusing the title by releasing crappy games like Mysims,SimAnimals Etc.
They already killed SimCity.

Yeah, I mean having 4 main games released in a period of ten years is just waaaay too much, talk about overkill.

I don't think the Pokémon games have a single bit of originality left in 'em. VOIP

Aaand I really, really, REALLY wish they'd give Sonic a rest. I don't want to see it stop altogether - how awful would that be - but I mean, come on; every new game they make for him these days just damages his reputation further. Just give it a rest, let the public forget the recent suckage, then get something really GOOD together.

I just think they should get rid of the third dimension when it comes to Sonic. And the weird spin-offs.
