View Full Version : Sealed Games - Thoughts?
Factory Sealed games, some consider them to be the holy grail of gaming while others consider it to be sacrilege.
What are you thoughts? Do you own any? Want any?
I've owned some in the past, for about 10 minutes before I get on the bus and have the fun task of opening 'em.
I..don't get what this is about? Most new games are factory sealed, unless retailers have used them as display boxes.
Personally I'd much rather have a factory sealed copy of a new game, because that way you can guarantee that the disc is going to be in relatively perfect condition.

It irks me when I buy a game on release and it's not sealed. Really quite annoying, HMV tend to do this.
I think he means as collectors items though.
Oh, sorry, I thought it was more obvious.
I'm talking about those that collect retro sealed games, or buy sealed games and never open them to keep them mint.
I have a bunch of them, say F-Zero on the SNES. Some would say it should be opened and played rather than left like that.
Oh, well if the game's cardboard cased then having it factory sealed would certainly keep it in mint condition, and thus maintain a high resell value.
That's true, Sega Saturn games are a nightmare to find in good condition.
What's funny is that on the Retro Gamer forums you'd get crucified for saying you enjoy them :P they take a stance that you all games should be played.
They should. If you're keeping a retro game factory sealed, your only intention is going to be to sell it at some point in the future, thus gaining mass profit for yourself and not really showing the original developers, or the game in question, much love.
I'd partially agree...it's nice see some of the games I own now worth a hell of a lot more valuable than the first were but at the same time I couldn't ever see myself selling them, unless it was either a money disaster or a trade for another game.
The same could be said about all entertainment media. If someone asked you if you liked a movie and you said you haven't watched it because you want to keep it in its original wrapping they'll think you're a twat... and they'll be right.
I guess if you already own a copy and have another one kept sealed that's slightly different.

I buy games to play them. Even if I did at some point buy a sealed copy of [insert rare game name here] I'd open it, play it and enjoy both the game and unified screams of those who would have have had it placed in a cupboard for 37 years before a 3-day ebay placement.
The same as Kaito-Kun, a game is bought to be played, not to be sealed until you think it's worth on E-bay...
I have never leave a game without playing it, that's why I bought it, right?
Movie's don't get more valuable with age though :P I generally try to have both sealed and unsealed copies though.
Edit: I buy sealed games to have them in mint, perfect condition. I find it thrilling to see MGS or OoT in pristine mint condition rather than a yellowed cart and torn manual

If I'm getting an old game I don't really care about what it looks like as long as it works.
I don't have any sealed games nor would I ever pay over the odds to get a sealed game as it's just pointless.-_- I do however prefer to get games in their original box and nothing frustraights me more than seeing a megadrive cart without a box! I mean, who the hell throws out a plastic case?!

I'm kinda the same, although to be honest I'd rather it wasn't too damaged.

Those cases were pretty big, cartridges took up less space.
MD cases were pretty large, I only have a few games and they still take up a lot of space -_-
I've just decided I'm going to collect sealed DS games :D it's a hugely popular format, there's hundreds of cool RPGs and not only are the games freely available, they're also pretty cheap.

I can see why some people do it but I could never see myself doing it.
I mean, I got no reason to collect games and not open them. Plus I don't have the money.
Plus, as Gavvie said you'll only buy it to sell at a later point.
I can only remember once that I bought a pretty rare game in Mint condition. It was "Dracula XX: Gekka no Yasokyoku", or "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night" for the saturn. I opened it, though, since I wanted to enjoy the game (which I did, thankfully. I did pay a pretty high price for it, after all).

Why would you want to collect games as display items? Who will be impressed other than the geekiest of gamers? It won't even look good in your house or anything; no-one is impressed by rows of games like they are an intellectual looking shelf of books, or cultured stack of films. It just seems pointless and anal.
I have quite a lot of games but I always play them or lend them to mates. I'm not that precious even though I spend a lot of time and money accumulating them. I kind of like to model my mass of accumulations on Oscar Wilde's book collection you see: there to be enjoyed without limitation, even to the point of destruction occasionally. A worn, clapped out old companion of a game that gave hours of joy will always be better than a new looking, unplayed and souless one.
I've never been on for collectors items, so I really can't see the point in buying a game twice, one to play and one to display/keep in a safe for years to come. It just does not make sense to me, especially if the owner has no intention whatsoever to sell it.
Well here's an example, I just got this one from a friend:

It is utterly mint and it looks fantastic :P does anyone find something like that moderatley exciting? Or would you open it and play it?
I've always been a collector though...whether it was toys with my Frosties or Pokemon cards XD

I'd open it and play it.

When buying games, it's a nice feeling to get them in mint condition, but that only lasts for, like, 2 seconds for me. Afterwords, I just open it and play it (the way the gaming gods intended it XD).
Instead of keeping games in mint condition, I try to keep them in good, playable condition. That way if I ever decide to sell that game, I can sell it at a good price and say it's in "Like New" condition. It would make me happy and a fellow gamer happy.
Real life example: I was looking up the Sonic OVA DVD on Amazon. I could buy it in OMGNEW condition for $188.98 USD, or I could buy it in Like New condition for $38.97 USD. I think you know what I'd go for: a VHS copy for only $12.91 USD! XD

That's just a dirty platinum copy of a game. Who cares if it's sealed or not.

^ FFIX Is actually the last retro game I bought that was sealed and the first thing I did was open it. Just seems pointless to me to keep sealed games. Only way I'd do it is if I was uber rich, then I'd buy two of everygame. But im not unfortunately.......yet.
I didn't know Infogrames published FFIX here.

I never got the point of Platinum/Gamers Choice/Xbox Classic.

^ I see the point of them. I just never understood why they always had to give them such wanky covers.
I never got the point of Platinum/Gamers Choice/Xbox Classic.
I too do not see the point of rereleasing popular and usually hard to find games at budget price.
The cases never bothered me much, least not as much as Platinum games loosing all CD art.

All the games I've seen in Platinum are common and no difference in price.

Yup, you ever come down here and you'll see.
I think for Playstation, when a game exceeds a certain number of sales it goes Platinum, from there it reaches a cheaper price than the original copy and occasionally includes extra content :P so if you're late to the party a platinum copy can be pretty good stuff, in terms of collecting platinum aren't as fun, it's the original versions you want :D
Playstation Platinum aren't too bad though x3 at least, not as bad as those fucking N64 Player's Choice, or PS2 Platinum

Same for all, depends on units shifted. MGS4 is a good example of Platinum being pretty much necessary, was impossible to find new cheap when I got my PS3. :(
Had to get a filthy 2nd hand copy from CEX.
Yeah, but PS3 Platinum for some oddly bizarre reason has that ugly yellow bar on it.
PSP/PS2 Platinum isn't too bad, in my opinion, but I'm going to avoid PS3 Platinum like the plague.

CD art was fucking awful though, nothing but the name of the game in a black box.
Agree with Rek, CD art was terrible!!
I actually really like the PS3 Platinum, the silver and yellow bar look freaking awesome :D
I hate the PSP platinum :P

Final Fantasy IX was my favorite game. It was like eye candy city.
Kuja and ViVi were both the stuff dreams are made of. <3<3<3<3<3
...heck, Black Waltz III was even pretty hot.
But no one was as scrumptiously mysterious as Sir Fratley Irontail. Yumyumyum.

Hm...
Hey Nakkun, how do you feel about FFXI being sealed up, perfect beautiful condition but never played? Would you rather it was untouched, or should it be played?

If I don't get the opportunity to scope out the players in action, test their mettle, beat down a coupla bad muthafuggers, it's not worth even owning.
Of course, if there are no players (i.e., it's a puzzle game), I always settle for in-game action. If I don't get to combo, or spin, or explode/collapse/destroy something, it's not worth my time.
And if none of those apply to a game, testing my brainmeats is always good.
Play the game. Don't bother buying something just to keep it sealed...and if you feel you have to get a second copy of something to keep it sealed, spend the money on a classic game you love playing that you don't have, instead of something to look at all day and dust every now and again.
When it comes to games, test their skills. It's the only way to show your respect for the developers and the beaucoup hours they logged making it. Think of it this way---if you made a game, wouldn't you want everyone to play it for themselves and see how well it was constructed? Or would you want them to judge your future developments on someone else's opinion of your game?
Hydlide is a great example. The graphics suck like a Dyson compared to newer games, but it's wicked hard to beat and the development of character vs enemy is so surprising. You can never tell what a game has going for it until you try.

I agree. If you're gonna buy a sealed game and not play it, it might as well not have the game inside.

Quite a lot of them don't :P re-seals are a big problem, mostly with NTSC nintendo games as they didn't have the red strip.
