I remember we had a thread on this before... and at the time I was a right n00b when it came to it. But a trip to Japan and more has since changed that, and I now actually watch the stuff! ^_^. So what you guys into? For me its been...
.hack//SIGN
Fullmetal Alchemist
Elfen Lied

Also started to watch some Chobits and read a bit of King of Hell

Not much I know, but its a start =P

But a trip to Japan

BANNED! You bastard!

Right, back on topic... I've only ever had a few of the Battle Royale Manga books, and it was good, but I've never bothered to get the others. Same with Initial D, which kicks azz. I should complete those two at least... I like Manga, but it's not that cheap eh?

Anime wise, I enjoyed Sonic X (the Japanese one!). Love Hina was ace too, gotta love that theme tune. I have something like the first sixty episodes of Bleach which I still have not watched, I should do really...

Initial D is my favourite though, it's just awesome, and the cheesy Eurobeat music is ace. Oh on the topic of Initial D... Initial D Street Stage for PSP is excellent, and it's by SEGA! ^_^

Yea thats the thing I found with Manga, it seems that the bookshops can only get it from the USA which basically means stupid amounts for us. Ottakars is quite good though, cos they do a Manga collectors card (every 4 book free)

At the moment I'm reading the first few volumes of Bleach but I read Naruto online as its released and translated every week. I adore Love Hina and Full Metal Alchemist and found Hack decent too.

Anime wise, Cowboy Beebop to me is my all time favourite series next to Samurai Champloo. Naruto however, is a crime with the ridiculous fillers at the mo.

Learn to read French. The French have been translating mangas for a long time. Importing from there would be a hell of a lot cheaper.

My sister got me and one of my friends into Studio Gihbly movies as they are ace! they have a lot of humour and emotive bits.
I never know there was a BR manga books as i've only seen the movie.
avoid BR2 like the plague though as it was utter rubbish:ohmy:

Is the anime of LotT any good? I've got the manga... shame its a bit on the short side, but its still good. Whats even more of a shame is that I cant get any of the games any more, just the first one <_<

Oh, just started to watch Cowboy Bebop as well. Very good

I think my favourite anime would have to be Dominion Tank Police by Masamune Shirow. God I loved that series so very, very much. I really must start watching anime again, I was watching Ranma 1/2 on Youtube for a while but I stopped for some reason, maybe I'll start again.

Shaman King is awesome.

I like mainly all Shonen Jump titles.:)

Especially RouroKen, Naruto, Yugioh, One Piece, Hikaru no Go and DEATH NOTE!!

I think Hikaru no Go may have the greatest first series theme tune ever.

I like non Shonen things like Azumanga and Samurai Champloo though.

I like it, if not just for the atmosphere it creates. It's a slightly different story though, there's no Zephie in it.

Warning: avoid the Shaman King anime like the plague. Perhaps it adapts the manga well enough story-wise, but how they managed to destroy a perfectly good visual style that way is beyond me.
As for the manga, I have mixed feelings about it. But I do enjoy reading it on a basic level. Enough to keep me going.

You should try reading the Manga of Dominion if you haven't already, much better in my opinion cause Masamune Shirow has a lot more to do with it :P

Here's a list of my favorite Anime series and films:

Trigun, Rahxephon, Ghost in the Shell:SAC, Macross, Cromartie high school, Bubblegum crisis, Haibane Renmai, Escaflowne, Boogiepop phantom, Neon genesis Evangelion (the TV series), Wings of honneamise, Dead leaves, Millennium actress, Metropoliss, Barefoot Gen, Grave of the fireflies, Perfect blue, Porco rosso and most Ghibli stuff.

Manga:

Death note, Buddha, Trigun and Trigun Maximum, Ghost in the shell, Appleseed, Dominion tank police, One piece, Bleach, Dragon ball, Sand land, Uzumaki, Naruto, Akira and finally Lone wolf and cub.

Sorry about that but I love making lists.

Hey guys, dont mind me for bumping, but I've been watching a couple more things lately and were wondering if the same can be said for any of you lot. Just gone through all of Rozen Maiden, was very good... only hope they do a third season. Bit of a weird idea, and if you can get over the fact that you're watching anime about living dolls, its actually very good! Oh, and I kinda started watching Pokemon again after getting the game... hehe =/

So far I've watched and enjoyed the following anime series: Neon Genesis Evangelion, Escaflowne, Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, Sonic X (saw it up to episode 52) and Naruto (saw it up to episode 137). Also saw a bit of Yu-Gi-Oh!. Right now I'm watching Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.

Death Note. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHNqMxaA_uA)

Excellent anime.
Darn. The YouTube video is gone... "This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Nippon Television Network Corporation". I'm seeing way to many of those lately. I've gotta come up with a good way to mirror YouTube videos on my own site.

Also saw a bit of Yu-Gi-Oh!. Right now I'm watching Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.

Yeah, I watched all of Yu-Gi-Oh! and got out of it when GX started. I wasn't very happy with the character change and being an official Upper Deck Entertainment judge was taking too much time in my life (not to mention the cost of cards). I still love how much that TCG made you think though. I still find myself playing it on Nintendo DS.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Case Closed in their list of anime, nor was Zatch Bell listed. I so loved Case Closed. I'd always PVR record them and pause the show and make guesses before I skipped over the commercials.

I've watched 4 episodes of Full Metal Alchemist, and that's it for any anime in the last 5 years. Other then Yugioh come to think of it. And Pokemon for a while. But that went naff after Johto. Oh and Sonic X.

Mostly anime butchered by 4kids then. When I watch FMA, it'll likely be subs, can't stand most anime dubs that I see on TV now.

Tell you what needs an anime. One that cannot be made shite by dubbing due to it likely not being released in the west.

Battle Royale. Has a manga, so why not?

I like:

Dragon Ball
Samurai Champloo
Cowboy Bebop
Neon Genesis is OK
FLCL was weird but good
Slayers
Utawarerumono though stereotypical in some ways is really good
Witch Hunter Robin
Trigun
Anything Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli

Manga:

King of Hell
Kazan
and some others I cannot think of now because it is getting late.

Oh hey this seems like a good place to post some interesting news.

Following on from earlier reports (http://zepy.momotato.com/2008/07/04/bones/) of a Fullmetal Alchemist sequel being in the works, and despite those reports (http://www.animeuknews.net/news/1703/fullmetal-alchemist-darker-than-black-sequels-in-the-works) being denied (http://www.bones.co.jp/news/archives/000529.html) directly (http://zepy.momotato.com/2008/07/06/bones-says-animator-list-is-fake/) by the Japanese animation studio Bones, AnimeNewsNetwork has reported (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-08-20/new-fullmetal-alchemist-tv-anime-series-confirmed) via MoonPhase (http://d.hatena.ne.jp/moonphase/20080821#p1) that the rumour was in fact true, with volume 20 of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga confirming that there will indeed be a new anime series is in the works. Giapet (http://giapet.net/2008/08/20/fma-season-2-rumors-part-deux/) reports that the series may not be a direct sequel, but in fact a more close interpretation of the manga, though this is unconfirmed. The director for the new series is also unconfirmed.

That's definitly...exciting? I loved the series, probably one of the best but I'm not sure it needs a sequal... maybe a remake ala Hellsing Ultimate maybe.

According to a news report published by Eyeonanime.co.uk (http://eyeonanime.co.uk/panda.php), UK distributor Manga Ent. have struck a deal with US anime publisher Funimation to release the following anime series in the UK on DVD:

Black Blood Brothers Series 1 Part 1 (November 10th 2008)
Ghost Hunt Series 1 Part 1
Itsudatte My Santa!
Jy-Oh-Sei: Planet of the Beast King
xxxHOLiC Series 1 Part 1 (October 27th 2008)

No more information than the above has been revealed, and indeed, UK anime fans are bound to have many questions about this, not least of all whether or not Funimation have again switched their UK DVD distribution. This time from Revelation Films to Manga Ent., keeping in mind that the former originally replaced (http://www.animeuknews.net/news/1193/revelation-films-takeover-funimation-dvd-releases-in-the-uk) MVM Films as Funimation's UK distributor in 2006. More news has been promised for October's London Expo (http://www.londonexpo.com/).

Now this is interesting. I may very well have to attend Octobers expo, because from that list there's a very important series missing one Manga Entertainment will love to have to go with Bleach and Naruto.

Oh god yes!

Just watched the first episode of Gundam 00 S2 and it's fantastic.

The characters have all had a minor redesign since it's set 4 years after the original and all look great.

Saji finds out Setsuna is a meister!

Setsuna finds Lockon's twin brother to make him the new Lockon Statos.
Two Tierias!?
Louise seems to be working for the Titans... I mean A-LAWS.
Totally kick ass version of Exia

Also it finally seems like the titular Gundam 00 is going to get some action.

So awesome. Next week can't come fast enough.

Currently being subbed by gg.

You could start with Gundam 00 since it's the new series.

I suggest starting with Mobile Suit Gundam though (aka Gundam 0079) since it was the very first series.

Gundam series are seperated into their own universe:

U.C:
List of Universal Century Gundam animated series and movies and live-action films in the order of their release:

Mobile Suit Gundam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Gundam) (TV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television): 1979; compilation movies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film): 1981–1982)
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Zeta_Gundam) (TV: 1985; compilation movies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film): 2005-2006)
Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Gundam_ZZ) (TV: 1986)
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Gundam:_Char%27s_Counterattack) (movie: 1988)
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Gundam_0080:_War_in_the_Pocket) (OVAs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OVA): 1989)
Mobile Suit Gundam F91 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Gundam_F91) (movie: 1991)
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Gundam_0083:_Stardust_Memory) (OVAs: 1991; compilation movie: 1992)
Mobile Suit Victory Gundam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Victory_Gundam) (TV: 1993)
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Gundam:_The_08th_MS_Team) (OVAs: 1996, compilation movie: 1998)
Gundam the Ride: A Baoa Qu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gundam_the_Ride:_A_Baoa_Qu) (amusement park ride movie: 2000)
G-Saviour (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G-Saviour) (live action (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_action) TV movie: 2000)
Gundam Neo Experience 0087: Green Divers (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gundam_Neo_Experience_0087:_Green_ Divers&action=edit&redlink=1) (specialty format movie: 2001)
Gundam Evolve (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gundam_Evolve) (short film series: 2001-2007, all episodes are based on UC except Episodes 3, 6, 7, 8 and 14)
Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Gundam_MS_IGLOO) (CGI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_generated_imagery) movies The Hidden One Year War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Gundam_MS_IGLOO#The_Hidden_One_Year_Wa r): 2004; OVAs Apocalypse 0079 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Gundam_MS_IGLOO#Apocalypse_0079): 2006)

A.C:
Which is Gundam Wing.

C.E:
Which is Gundam Shit... I mean Seed.

A.D:
Gundam 00

If you want to watch the U.C ones I suggest following the order of release which is what I'm doing or you could follow the timeline but that would mean swapping between quality since some are based before Zeta but made way after it.

I'd also say watch the series instead of the compilation movies, mainly because the movies weren't dubbed and use rather old low quality audio for voices. Plus the dubbing is awesome.

Edit: I forgot to mention, each universe is seperate, so they don't relate to each other in anyway.

Yea it's similar to Final Fantasy. Though each series in the universe may be connect with previous series, example 0079, Zeta, ZZ and Char's Counterattack are connect but F91 isn't, though really U.C is the only one where this is a problem since the only ones outside of U.C are Seed and 00 which have had second seasons.

Prepare Yourself For Another Bloodbath Freaks!

Vampires exist and for over a century a secret organisation known as Hellsing has been secretly protecting the British Empire from the undead. When Sir Integra Hellsing succeeded as the head of the organisation, she also inherited the ultimate weapon against the undead enemies, the rogue vampire named Arucard. Armed with an enormous gun and possessing mysterious and frightening powers, Arucard is forced to shoot Seras Victoria, a policewoman held hostage by an enemy vampire. "Do you want to live?" he asks Seras, whose very answer changes the course of her existence. Now reborn as Arucard's servant, Seras is torn between her conflicting humanity and her vampire urges...

Yea sounds go...wait...

Arucard

Oh yeah, Reknoc... You said in another thread that you wanted to get into Macross. Macross has a very linear timeline as long as you ignore the Macross II OVA series and stay far away from Robotech. Robotech is a bastardized (Westernisation) version of SDF Macross for the first 36 episodes, then it really goes to hell. Check out this wiki, it'll show you the correct order to watch the various series to make sense of it all.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macross#Series_chronology

Look primarily at the year the particular series is set in and you'll be fine. ie. Macross Zero, SDF Macross, Macross Plus, Macross 7, then Macross Frontier. The rest is optional. Macross 7 is a little cheesy, but very good. Frontier is the topping on the cheesecake.

Darn I was hoping that wasn't the case with Robotech since I'm having a rather hard time finding for SDF Macross.

I have seen a Macross movie it was on the Sci-fi channel when they bothered showing anime (at like 3am), wasn't too impressed.

Still might pick up Robotech since it's only Ģ20 for all of it.

Edit: Nevermind found SDF Macross by W_B so yay me.

What happened to that channel on Sky? Can't find it anymore.

Just realised I never made myself a favourites/likes list.

Lucky Star
G-On Riders
Di Gi Charat
Chobits
Please Twins
Sonic X (Some of it was alright)
Bleach
Futari Wa Pretty Cure Max Heart
The Melancholy Of Suzumiya Haruhi

Stuff I want to watch/read soon:

Azumanga
Initial D (I started it but never finished)
Death Note
Negima

I know I've watched more but that's all I can really think of right now.
Also, I'll add an Anime OST list if anyone wants :P.

Anime isn't popular enough in U.K to be worth dedicating a whole channel to it.

Apparently Sci-fi ended airing anime because it wasn't popular enough
it was on at 3-5am so no one would watch it
but it wouldn't get an earlier time slot because it wasn't popular enough

To Aru Majutsu no Index

The last anime that Iīm going to watch, broadcasted since October 4th.
Finally a fansub have subbed it.

Hereīs the promo video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvQolh_F6kY)

The synopsis (Copied, pasted and translated)
"The story is set in a world very different to ours where there are supernatural powers developed and channeled through science and magic that is developed and channeled through religion.
Our protagonist is Kamijou Touma, our classic and normal young high school student. The only thing that makes it different from the rest is:
1. It's an animal in the studies.
2. It has an unusual power called "Imagine Breaker"."

... without words, I hope is good.

Stuff I want to watch/read soon:

I've got Negima good fun to watch and full of fanservice if your into that sort of thing. If I remember rightly I think they did two versions of the anime, one has changes and is more comedy based and the other one is based more on the manga and with less fanservice.

My fave from that anime is Nodoka Miyazaki

Congratulations on your find. You guys get the Sci-Fi channel in the UK? Is it the same one us yanks have? If it is, then they still do show anime, but its only for 1 hour every week, and they've been on a Gurren Lagan kick lately...which I'm not all that crazy for. Regardless, showtime is Monday at 9pm local time, so...if I add 6 hours.....EEK! Hopefully if our SFC is your SFC, its at least timeshifted... Anyway, they call it "Animonday" (lame), so check your listings, and fire up a DVR or something. Aparently if what I've seen is true, the next series featured on "Animonday" will be the English dub version of Gundam 00 series 1. Good stuff!

P.S. That Macross "movie" you saw was likely the movie version of Macross Plus, and yes, it is not very impressive. Basically a cut-paste-rehash of the 4 part OVA series which is far better. Plus was co-directed by the great Shinichiro Watanabe and featured a soundtrack by none other than Yoko Kanno. Excellent watch....in OVA form...

Nah ours is pretty different. They used to have a small feature play before the anime block where a guy would give a brief summary and review of the Blue Gender, Evangelion and Nadesico episode and whatever crap softcore hentai Manga Entertainment licensed which they show at the end.

Then it went off then came back all of a sudden with Arc the Lad and Gasaraki.

Even our Adult Swim doesn't air any anime (to the best of my knowledge).

I honestly don't remember the Macross movie but I'm sure there was some green haired woman in it and they were on some space station.

The London Expo was held over this past weekend. It is one of the biggest trade events for the UK anime industry and, as a result, is where many of the most exciting news stories are first broken to the public. Below are the new UK licenses announced by the likes of Manga Ent. and MVM, while the miscellaneous notes offer some interesting tidbits of information from the same companies.
Also, please note, this news post is sourced from a combination of convention reports, including EyeOnAnime (http://eyeonanime.co.uk/panda.php), Fudce at AnimeOnDVD (http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showpost.php?p=1451902&postcount=4) and UKAnime.net (http://www.uk-anime.net/article.asp?IntID=21&strPageNo=1), all of which offer valuable information that is more than worth reading.

ADV notes
Planning to re-release catalogue titles. Specifically, Get Backers will be collected and released over 2 box-sets. Beez notes
"Up market" box-set of Gundam Wing is being planned; sourced from new HD masters straight from Japan.
Gurren Lagann UK DVD release should mimic US DVD specification i.e. "double volume" releases. Manga Ent notes
Blood+ is currently too expensive for a UK release.
Manga Ent. anime will be appearing on iTunes and XBOX Live.
Naruto Shippuuden is planned to debut on UK DVD in the summer of 2009.
Origin: Spirits of the Past has sold well, especially at ASDA, while Naruto has, so far, sold a combined 120,000 DVDs in the UK.
The recent Funimation licenses (http://www.animeuknews.net/news/1756/manga-ent-license-11-new-funimation-anime-series-for-uk) are not a part of any on-going distribution agreement between the two companies, rather, each title was licensed seperately.
The UK DVD release of the Claymore anime will begin in January '09 across several 'single' DVD volumes i.e. the traditional method of releasing anime on DVD, as opposed to a box-set. Revelation Films notes
Reassured their customers that they intend to finish releasing all of the anime series they suddenly placed on hiatus (http://www.animeuknews.net/news/1741/revelation-films-delay-releases-until-2009) earlier in 2008.

Something to do with holding the license and not letting anyone else in Europe have it, which sounds ridiculous but is meant to be why we haven't got DBZ remastered either and you know that'll sell.

That's true, though to be honest I don't watch subs when watching the DVD because no one can get subtitles that don't look like crap.
What series has 13 episodes on? I know Bleach and Death Note are two volumes so it's 8 (or 9 in Bleach 2:2 case). Also Claymore is going to be single volume like Hellsing Ultimate which is abit off putting. :(

I think it's because Viz are still translating them so they're trying to have even spacing between volumes rather than releasing a massive batch then waiting an age for the next to come out.

Yea checked Viz's site out we've caught up with the American release almost, they're two volumes ahead and since our next release will contain 3 volumes.

I'm not sure which is better, a single volume faster release or the multivolume release we got now.

I didn't think Little Garden was too bad, I'm not a fan of the hugely long arcs like Alabasta and Water 7/Enies Lobby, they were good, but I just thought they lasted a bit long.

But yeah, they should'nt have skipped it due to the importance to the story.

Alabasta was alright but the CP9 arc was amazing even though I'm not a massive fan of the "power levels" and other DBZ powers from it. But oh my was the Luffy/Ussop fight and Merry rescuing them from Enies Lobby sad T-T.

Vic Fangirl much?

That's because he has the voice of an Angel <3

It's even more weird hearing it sung by one person because I tend to listen to the Straw Hats version.

4Kids actually made an English version of We Are! but decided not to use it because rap would be more appealing.

So how about some legal free anime news!

First off is the Shonen Jump specials featuring One Piece and DragonBall over at JumpLand first though you need to download their flashplayer:

http://www.jumpland.com/animetour/index_en.html

Instructions are on that page.

But how about this!

Viz are going to upload Naruto straight after it airs in Japan on Crunchyroll (for free users it's a week wait) and it's worldwide apparently!

Now I'm not a massive fan of Naruto but I may just catch up with it so I can watch it on CR.

So I downloaded the Funidub DVDs pretty decent, if I did have one problem (and I do) it's most of the Kaya arc. Ok so one of the problems isn't Funi's fault, one of the BGMs goes all weird 80's techno on you. The biggest problem is Merry/Jango's rather urgh fake british accents and the Meowban brothers voices. Still pretty top notch though.

Yea Roy bugged me abit, I dunno if it's a style thing or what though, something about the art certainly seems closer to the manga. The anime only really branched off from manga, though there were some big changes and filler, at the part where Ed and Al fight those armor guys, so I don't know if they're gonna go through the start again.

Genres: adventure, drama, mystery, psychological, supernatural
Themes: Folklore, Mythology
Plot Summary: They are neither plants nor animals. They differ from other forms of life such as the micro-organisms and the fungi. Instead they resemble the primeval body of life and are generally known as "Mushi". Their existence and appearance are unknown to many and only a limited number of humans are aware of them. Ginko is a "Mushi-shi" who travels around to investigate and find out more about the "Mushi". In the process, he also lends a helping hand to people who face problems with supernatural occurances which may be related to the "Mushi".

But that doesn't even begin to explain how stunningly beautiful this anime is.

The MTV Movies Blog has word (http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2008/12/17/keanu-reeves-eager-to-do-something-good-with-cowboy-bebop-movie/) that (Hollywood actor) Keanu Reeves is currently working on a live action adaptation of the (1997) sci-fi anime TV series Cowboy Bebop, with the intention of playing main character Spike Spiegel (a kung-fu fighting bounty hunter). One particular quote from Reeves explains how the movie will begin with the (Red Eye) story from the first episode, before "picking out various highlights" from the rest of the series:

“We’re taking the Red Eye [story], the beginning part of the series,” he explained, “and then we’ll deal with the end of the series. We’re trying to figure out [the time frame]. We’re looking at the story right now.”

Well you only need to watch one episode to realise that Spike has a wide range of emotions, more than just one. I wonder, since it's based on the first episode if Faye and Ed won't be in it (and Ein I guess) which might be for the best because no one could play Ed.

So I watched the first episode of a couple of the new series starting now.

Dragonball Kai: Apparently this is Dragonball Z cut up, it's been knocked down to 100 episodes, and alot of filler fluff have been cut out (even though it starts with filler showing Freeza killing Bardok and Goku looking for Gohan in the woods). It's not been redrawn but the graphics have been touched up alittle to look slightly better.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood: EEEEEEIIIIEEEEIIIEEEI NEW FULLMETAL! If it is following the manga more than the last series the first episode was an odd place to start, it's basically just filler and used as an excuse to show most of the main characters. Not a fan of Roy's new voice (even though it's the same as my favourite Gundam Meister Lockon Stratos). Awesome new opening aswell.

Also watched the first three episodes of Soul Eater, it's really stylish. Also <3 Death the Kid.

Okay, the idea of mecha basketball had me thinking twise about this (Mecha and sport are usually huge no-no for me) but the animation quality was incredibly well done. It was mostly flashback but it showed Roy's first meeting with the Elrics and Edwards much cooler entrance exam from the manga. There was also a reference to Xing which never appeared during the anime.

It was mostly flashback but it showed Roy's first meeting with the Elrics and Edwards much cooler entrance exam from the manga. There was also a reference to Xing which never appeared during the anime.
Now to read the manga to see if Lior wasn't a desert town in that.

Edit: The opening is still awesome.

It's worth a read, but after the second episode you probably won't notice much difference till the part where they infiltrate that lab protected by soulbound armours.

About six months ago, I would have shat on this thread. HATED manga and anime.

But my eyes have been opened! Death Note (Well, up to about episode 26. ), primarily. Also, oddly, Ranma 1/2. o_O

What do you all recommend for a newcomer? I tried Bleach but found it a bit too silly in places. Oh, I also watched ep 1 of Wolf's Rain, which looks fantastic. :D

Indeed, although I should mention that the original version of the anime eventually branches into a separate storyline from the manga. They're currently airing a re-make of the anime which is supposed to be going to follow the manga a bit more closely.

Probably because, sans Gundam, the shows they license are usually quite mediocre at best. Or the contents are just downright shit. *remembers naff copy of Gundam Movie 1 with ugly subtitles and no dub track*

Edit: Funimation's video site has been completely geoblocked now, in trying to fight fansubbers Funi have now forced the majority of viewers to use fansubs *golf clap*

Finally a manga I'm quite fond of is getting adapted into an anime \o/ That manga is Fairy Tail by Hiro Masashima or something, the guy that did Groove Adventure Rave/ Rave Master. It's about a wizards guild doing... wizardy stuff... It's not the best written manga but the wizard theme allows for some rather awesome special attacks (magic). You may have heard of it as "that manga that kinda looks like One Piece".

Seriously, ep 227 was like a needless prequel to ep 1 and ep 228 had the most pointless fan service I've ever seen. And then there was an episode when they had some stupid soccer game. People have a lot of mixed reactions when I say this, but my personal favorite Manga is Rave Master. The first one I ever read, other than a few random Pokémon spin-offs. I know it's not the deepest, like FMA and such, it's not the best, but it's still simply my favorite. And it IS hilarious, as far as I'm concerned, although humor's pretty subjective. :P

Hahah Rave is actually one of my favs too. The first series I started reading, aside from Dragonball. Really enjoyed the humour in it, and I really enjoyed seeing how Mashima got better as an artist through the volumes. Story and charracters were nothing special (although i really liked the wierdos like Plue, the flower on Harus house, and the horse with the spinning head) but I kind of liked the adventureous feel of it all.

I'm a bit pissed that Volume 33 still hasn't been released here, although it should have been released this May.

Really liked Fairy Tail in the beginning, but latest arcs have gone from meh to shit up and down. Only real reson I keep reading is beacuse Erza is such a badass. Can't really say if I liked the first episode of the anime or not. The pacing felt a bit off in alot of places. Seemed better than Rave, but that doesn't say much since that anime was horrible. And every time Lucy says something I see Misa from Death Note. Really annoying, but I guess I'll get used to it.

Really like the OP song of Fairy Tail, but the Intro animation seemed pretty low budget. Don't anime intros usually look better than the content in the episodes, since it's going to be reused in every single episode?

I really liked the opening as well now I think about it. One thing I'll say about the anime is that it was very close to the first chapter of the manga which is new. Wasn't expecting Natsu's voice to be so deep I always imagined him with Luffy's voice thanks in part to Mashima's style being very close to Oda's in Fairy Tail.

I have read some of Rave Master and I quite enjoyed it. Didn't watch much of the anime but I do remember the dub song being pretty awefulsome.

Though it's just so awful I have to keep reading it, mostly to see the artist pack as much as the roid injected characters into one frame as possible making them strike stupid poses and pull funny faces. I guess I don't really want to judge it fully till I get to part 3 where all the anime and games come from.

I usually get hooked on a series by the first episode, because the creators usually put allot of effort in it to leave a good first impression. I stop watching most shows after episode 2, nowdays, since the quality usually drop heavily from the first episode. Examples of this are Tower of Druaga, Arad Senki, and Basquah. Really sweet first episodes, but then I got extremely disappointed in the way they all continued from then on.

Well, I just tore through all 448 (to date) pages of Z A P ! a "non-commercial" webcomic, which is also a Manga.

I won't go on a full-blown fanboy geek rant here. Suffice it to say, I love it and consider it to be epic. The website is www.zapinspace.com (http://www.zapinspace.com/), and the first page can be linked to directly at http://www.zapinspace.com/d/20030713.html.

WORD OF WARNING: Many may be liable, as I almost was, to be put off by the artwork on the first page, namely its wholly amateurish "look-at-me-world-I've-got-photoshop" art style. DO NOT BE FOOLED! The art improves constantly, and by the 300th or so page, it's on par with any commercial, professional Manga or anime. Stick with it; the story & humor makes it worth it from the start, and the art catches up soon enough.

Seconded. We need to make something clear: The style of the art in a comic does not define whether or not it is manga or not; manga can be any art style after all, just like western comics can be any art style. Webcomics such as the one above and MegaTokyo are not manga, (Heck, they're not even comics, they're webcomics) even though they are drawn in the art style commonly associated with manga. (The same goes with pretty much half of Tokyopop's "Manga" range.)

What makes manga, manga is that it is Japanese, if it's not Japanese then it's not manga. If an American, for example, drew a comic in the style we've mentioned before then it is still a comic, because it was drawn by an American (in America) and originally in English, the opposite is also true; if a western art style comic was drawn in Japan (by a Japanese person) in the Japanese language then it would become manga. As a simple rule "Manga" is the Japanese word for comic. So if it's Japanese then use the word "Manga" if it's not Japanese then we should use our own word "comic".

Reknoc
01-11-2009, 14:04
Yea exactly. You can't define it simply by style when manga styles can change depending on artist, One Piece for example looks nothing like Beserk. And they're never as badly drawn as most american comics drawn in a "japanese" style.

One Piece, Funimation dub. But if you're not after a massive series or something abit more serious then I would recommend Paranoia Agent. Also if you haven't seen it Cowboy Bebop and Trigun.
