I don't have a Saturn (I know, shame on me), but I want to buy one eventually and try to collect all the games I can for it (Except for Panzer. Too expensive for me! >_<). I want to do that for other old systems too (expecially the Dreamcast!).

To me Sonic R and Sonic Jam was good. But the best saturn game ever is Nights!Hand down
SFIII, Burning rangers, die hard arcade, sonic r, nights, guardian heroes are all great games but the number one is...

Shining force trilogy ,Nights and Radiant silvergun and many more...
i recently got a jap saturn and so far i have: KOF '96; wachenroder; galaxy force ii and system shock.
my favourites are KOF '96, as it is a kick-ass fighter and galaxy force II as the saturn version is FAR superior to the crap megadrive port:biggrin:. wachenroder plays good but it is all in japanese and i don't know where to get a translation:( and creature shock i only bought because it was the import the shop had, avoid this game at all costs!
Erm....Panzer Dragoon, probably hands down too. :p
Actually, can i say the unreleased Shenmue.:D

Whew, where to begin? In no particular order:
1. Radiant Silvergun - Treasure has never failed to disappoint me. This import gem is definately a must have! If you have a Saturn, this is the game to get. Especially since it costs more on Ebay than Panzer Dragoon Saga.
2. Panzer Dragoon Saga - Great game series translated very well to RPG.
3. Shining Force 3 - Great RPG series that, also, never let me down (albeit I heard the latest one on PS2 is not so good).
4. X-Men/Marvel vs. Street Fighter - Forget the PS1 versions, these are the one to get!
5. Policenauts - The great Hideo Kojima made this game as a pseudo-sequal to Snatcher. Great game and also contains the character Meryl Silverberg (though the name is the only correlation between the Meryl in Metal Gear Solid series)
6. King of Fighters 98 - As much love as people give 96, I really liked 98 a lot. Awesome graphics and display, I love it!
7. Guardian Heroes - Like I said, Treasure has yet to let me down. This game combines elements of Final Fight with a little RPG.
There's others but other people already posted. And I know I'm missing some but that's some I can think of at the top of my head.
The Panzer Dragoon series is my favourite on the Saturn. I could watch the intro on the first one over and over again. Die Hard Arcade is tops too.

Hi there!
To me, the best Saturn games were Nights, Shining Force 3, Sonic R, Sonic Jam and Mr.Bones (no particular order).
I never played Mr. Bones first time round - Is it any good? I know it's rare.
Tails_1986
24-01-2007, 13:56
Yes, Mr.Bones is a good game. A little hard sometimes, but I think the levels had a good design and there were some diferent tasks to perform (playing guitar, telling jokes ...) to complete certain levels. Overall it's a very enboyable game.

Well, you know, the usual boring ones - Nights Into Dreams, Sonic R, plus I loved Manx TT Superbikes in the arcade and the Saturn is the only place you can play it at home!

What about Hier Of Zendor: The Legend, And The Land? That game was a good game. I know that you start off with strong ships, and then three missions later you have weak ships. But as you use them, they get stronger. But those friggin' MINES do however much damage their Attack power is. As long as it is NOT over 70, your flagships will be okay. But the reparing ship has 60 HP (Endurance, whatever) and it'll die if attacked by those strong mines. I friggin' LOVE that game!

I really need to get hold of Sega Rally again, I've not had it for ages and it really is racing game perfection.
Tbh, I think V-Rally 2 is a far better, more realistic Dreamcast rally racer. But, for my money, LeMans 24hr takes the cake for as far as DC racers go. IMO, of course.

V Rally 2 is wank in comparison to Sega Rally, banned! I jest.
Aye Le Mans is ace, but lets save that for another thread.

Well, let's see. There is Metal Slug, Sonic R maybe, Sonic Jam for the Sonic World and games, Sega Rally cause it's so much better than Daytona, SFlll cause it's like god compared to Fire Emblem, SITHA (Shining In The Holy Ark) because it's like a first-person FF7 of the sort.
Not to forget NiGHTS, Burning Rangers, Virtua Fighter 2, Fighters Megamix, Fighting Vipers, Virtual On, Virtua Cop 1 and 2, Gungriffon 1 and 2, and it goes on.
I own VF2, Gungriffon 1, Virtua Cop 1, Daytona USA, Sega Rally (US), Tomb Raider, and Fighters Megamix.
And Tomb Raider sucks, believe it or not.

I collect games, and I've been focusing on my Genesis collection, so...I haven't bought any Saturn titles recently, but I plan to get Sonic R, Burning Rangers, or Panzer Dragoon Saga soon
i know, the most gamer think its crap, but..... i love "virtual hydlide"
its one of my fav on the saturn - an easy action rpg with extreme ugly grafics and a bad soundtrack - i dont know why, but i truly love this titel

The Saturn is still my favourite console of all time. I don't I'd have got through mmy later teenage years without it:blush:
But the games I have fondest memories for would be:
Burning Rangers
Virtua Fighter 2
Sega Rally
Streetfighter Alpha 2
NiGHTS
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Castlevania Sympathy Of The Night
Shining Force III (wish they'd released the other two parts over here:mad:)
I could go on for alot more but I think push comes to shove those are the games for me.

Virtual Hydlide one of the first (free roaming) rpg style adventures I ever played, kept me playing for weeks! Until I completed it.
My best fav are:
Radiant silvergun (The best shooter game ever made on any system)
The shining force 3 trilogy and premium disc
Grandia
Nights
Policenauts
Saturn's Bomberman
Burning rangers
Deep fear
and many more....
SEGA Rally
Daytona USA
Destruction Derby
Sonic R
Sonic Jam
Burning Rangers
NiGHTS Into Dreams
Discworld (now abandonware for PC)
Virtua Fighter 1 & 2
Virtua Cop
House of the Dead
Only a small list because it would take me a while to type them all out. The Saturn, like the Dreamcast, has a lot of quality games for it that have either been overlooked or just not bothered with for some crap game on the PSX everyone's on about. -_-

Considering how feeble minded some people can be I wouldn't be surprised if people flocked to an inferior game instead of a quality game just because it was on Playstation. I can't say my Saturn collection is all that impressive (maybe when I get a job I'll go find some more) and if anyone needs proof of this look on my collection on IGN. (Same user name on there)
What I consider the best?
Gameplay: Can't beat Virtual ON. That game was and still is the most fun game to ever exist. I personally would enjoy a new next gen game of it. I personally think that it's underrated. (Except for those few that actually played it they know it's good.)
Musically: Sonic 3D Blast. I just love the music like Rusty Ruin. This is why I've always thought that the Saturn was the best. It might not be graphically superior to the N64 or PSx, but does it have beautiful sound. I can't recall any game having such a great soundtrack back in those days. (Maybe next to NiGHTS)
Pure Creativeness: NiGHTS hands down. I remember playing it and feeling really good about myself. It was like visual and audio fellatio. Even if you failed at the game you weren't frustrated at all. More or less you just were glad to play that place again.
Games I was too late in getting: The Shining games. I was young so I didn't have a lot of money back then, but I remember looking at the shining games and saying yeah that's the next thing I'm going to buy. Well when I did have the money to buy it. They weren't selling Saturn games anymore. I was devastated. So many games that I wanted to get but couldn't.

You may still be able to buy the games now if you have a hunt around the internet. Or there may be someone who is willing to sell it to you from elsewhere. Make sure it's a reliable source though. :)

That's the hard part. Finding said reliable source. I guess I'm left to just stumble on those games. (I refuse to E-bay.) It would be one thing if gaming stores kept the older games. (Like Play 'n Trade where I live, but even then it barely has much in older games.)
People just say to find a place to DL them, but I'm too lazy, and it's not really something I want to mess with since there are a lot of false files out there.
Sega Rally Championship is the best game ever on Saturn. I have it on PC and it has both Arcade and Saturn versions on Sega Rally Championship PC.

I agree. I still get goosebumps when I remember going down to the local newsagent's to get a copy of Sega Saturn Magazine that had the Virtual On demo on the cover. It was early December and really dark and was snowing and stuff. I was on my old bike. Long story, but it's a good Christmas memory.
However, just wanted to tell you that there is now a PS2 version of the original Virtual On - as well as Virtual On Marz. Thought you should avoid that, as it's poor.
As for spiritual successors though, Gundam Seed Renpou VS ZAFT and its sequel are similar in many ways, though they don't have the control system of Virtual On. Still they're very good.

Thanks. I was thinking of going to Play-asia.com to pick up the new old VOOM. Apparently it has online and a few other features. Though I doubt they'll be releasing it beyond Japanese shores. I'm actually thinking of being like "Parent's I know the perfect X-mas gift!" then getting it for Christmas.

Sorry that I couldn't join the party soon enough. Yes I already posted, but now that I own some new games, I can further my opinion.
In all, I own the Sega Saturn 3 Free Games pack, which contains Virtua Cop 1, VF2, and DayUSA (Daytona USA). I also own Fighters Megamix, Gungriffon, Sonic Jam (recent purchase), Sega Rally, US version to frank, Tomb Raider, WS (Worldwide Soccer) '98, Last Bronx, Wipeout, and WingArms.
Now my favorite out of them all is probably Sonic Jam, since it combines a great side-attraction, which just happens to be a richly-detailed, huge 3D world where you can attempt challenges and look at Sonic history, at least up to that point, and a nearly flawless reporting of Sonic 1, 2, 3, and SaK, not forgetting to add in Japanese manuals and SaK's lock-on capability.
VF2 is still, in many peoples opinion, the best 3D fighter anywhere, especially on the Saturn. Its balanced, yet savage and tricky gameplay forces you to become a master at it. Combine the regular and ranking modes with Sega's classic team battle mode, and you get long hours of competition.
Tomb Raider, however, is fairly mediocre. It looks and fells like its PC counterpart, which means its not very good.
While I could go into detail about all of my games, I need time, and time is not free on these boards. I am, after all, returning to activity at these forums. You get the idea though. Make your own collection of Saturn games. This console, despite not surviving the industry, shall survive into famous status forever, IMO.

Once Puyo Puyo SUN arrives I know that it will be that but for now it's Daytona USA.Puyo Puyo Sun is supposed to be very damn good. Make sure you get it.
I have decided, not surprisingly to me, to go into detail about the other games. Now then, let's start with Virtua Cop. Virtua Cop is the light gun game. It started the advent of the true light-gun games by going 3D, adding an advanced combo system, and because of this and the Saturn port, the Sega Stunner was created. Truly stunning, I must say. It's just a shame I don't own the Stunner.
We all know Daytona USA. For many dubious reasons, you could say. The monstrous amount of pop-up and only a 20p framerate ruin the game graphic wise, but the gameplay is still the best of its class, considering it was so good as to become the highest-grossing arcade game of all time.
Sega Rally is a huge one, to say the least. The NTSC and PAL versions differ however, mostly in a few graphical additions in the PAL/JAP regions. But as for all the versions, the one statement is always true: Sega Rally is why you bought a racing game for the Saturn. The graphical engine is so outstanding in that it proves to the Sony fanboys that the Saturn can do 3D without horrendous pop-up, as in Daytona. It also includes a great 2-player mode, an extensive Time Attack mode, and various customization features for any of the 3 cars. Simply an unforgettable classic in my view. Sadly though, I'm rusty at this game and that just sucks.
Speaking of racing games, Wipeout is another just splendid example. While the texturing is not as well done as the Playstation version, the gameplay and features are still there. Even more annoying than the texturing is that the songs were changed to evade copyright issues with Sony. The new soundtrack is still good anyways.
Fighters Megamix is an instant classic for the Saturn. It combines the characters and stages of both VF2 and FV (Fighting Vipers) into one, whilst providing many new features and modes. Aside from the training modes and extras, which include various pictures of SD-deformed characters in the game, are the special difficulty-based courses. Complete these and you get more characters, which get increasingly..odd. Either way though, this is an amazing game and you might as well buy it.
Gungriffon is a very brilliant game indeed. It manages to combine the gameplay of Mechwarrior with a new and advanced graphics engine. This creates a mech-battle game to be reckoned with. The gameplay controls may take some time to get used to, but once you get the controls, you'll get the game. It even has an MPEG-coded intro to the game. The story is also well developed, bringing back memories of the Cold War, and the graphics are very well detailed. Just buy it. I know you guys will love it.
Now WS '98 is a different story, being my only true sports game. I should be calling it football, but the stupid Americans call it Soccer, so fine. Not only those the game include the voice referees of British nationality, but it also allows you to save your campaign file to be saved to the rare, and I mean rare, Sega Saturn Backup Memory Cart and taken to a friend's house to play with him. A new feature that also sets it apart from its predecessors is the addition of football clubs that participate in major events. Apart from that, it's the same, good old gameplay that made it what it is. A great football game.
The final fighting game is Last Bronx, a weapons-based fighter that was made, literally, to combat Battle Area Toshinden, which was a rather mediocre fighting game despite being the first to feature weapons. Not only those the game contain its own anime intro, but at the end of a characters Saturn Mode run, you get a special cut scene for that character. You also get the Arcade Mode as usual and the Survival Mode, where you have to survive each following battle with the health you finished with from the last. Don't forget rankings too, and you have one amazing example of the weapons-based genre. Along with Fighters Megamix, this makes a deadly duo of the fighting genre.
Last on my list is WingArms, a plane-based combat title. Now while the graphics look old and dated, considering this was a 1st-generation title, the gameplay and ferocity of the game still impress me. Even though it has only one real mode, with no save, its just a good, robust plane combat game.
And where do I get all this stuff? Two stores in my area (the Dallas, TX area) called CGX (where I got all of my Saturn titles) and a new one down by my local Kroger called FX Game Exchange, where I currently get my new stuff. So I am rather lucky when it comes down to retro collecting. But yeah, that's my collection of games. Zdravstvuite to you all.

My favorites are Daytona and Battlestations. I just need to get a Saturn emulator for my computer to play them.
Guardian Heroes, the Street Fighter Alpha Series, Sega Rally to name but a few.

I first played Tomb Raider on the Saturn. Lara was everything to me - she became my role model! I will forever love the Saturn for giving me those great memories.
I also loved Blazing Dragons which was a point and click style game by Crystal Dynamics. And Panzer Dragoon - amazing music! Most games for Saturn were amazing though - I just don't get how it wasn't more popular.
Ah - NiGHTS iNTO DREAMS of COURSE!
I owned my fair share of Saturn games back in the day (I wish I still had most of them), but these are the ones that stood out most:
- NiGHTS into Dreams / X-Mas NiGHTS
- Guardian Heroes
- RayForce / Galactic Attack
- Virtua Cop 2

On the verge of finally getting:
Die Hard Arcade
Fighters MegaMix
It has been at least 10 years since I played either of these but remember them both being badass. Hope they are as good as I remember.
Slightly off-topic, but what size battery do I need for the internal memory of my Saturn?

A CR2032 is what you're after, get a decent brand of battery and it should see you for 2 years.

Before getting a memory card for game saving needs, I used to buy batteries at clock houses. They usually lasted a year, year and a half.

NiGHTS into Dreams is the only Saturn game I have and I love it! Much better than Journey of Dreams.

I've only played a handful of Saturn games, and of the games that are usually mentioned, I've play NiGHTS (own it, yay), Panzer Dragoon, and Astal (borrowed from friend): all of which are pretty good. I really liked playing Panzer Dragoon with the Dragoon, it was like a 3D Space Harrier to me. lol
Though I will say that I don't hate Virtua Racing, I'm usually not into racing games, but I like it. Sure the graphics aren't the best, but In a race, that's not the part I'm focusing on. Though I wanted to make the acceleration/brake button's the shoulders only to learn that pressing both simultaneously ends the race. :( Oh well.

For me, Sonic 3D Blast, NiGHTS, Bug!, Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop, Daytona USA, and Panzer Dragoon. Though I love all my Saturn games (except for the Incredible Hulk).

And Tomb Raider sucks, believe it or not.I would like to quote my earlier post to make some amends.
First of all, Sonic R..is an essential, even if just for the graphical prowess at the time. I now have Sonic Jam and, I've got to say, this is the best-built compilation on the Saturn, and of the whole generation. Nothing beats having a bunch of extra content, additional features to all of the 16-bit Sonic classics, and a great 3D world to boot. Sega Rally, in many ways, is superior to Daytona (not just graphics), but Daytona is still the classic purchase for a fun, every-now-and-then title to play. Sega Rally has the longevity, even so.
I really want SFlll, especially considering I recently beat the first Shining Force, but I know I'll need the dough first. Even so, I heavily anticipate getting it, as Fire Emblem drives me insane. I might Holy Ark as well, but that depends. I don't have a knack for most FPRPG's anyway.
To add to my previous list of games, I now own Last Bronx (best weapon-based fighter on the system and of the time), WingArms (pretty cool dogfighter) , Sonic Jam, Wipeout, and Sega Worldwide Soccer '98 (best soccer game ever, hands down).
And on Tomb Raider, it seems I have to take that back. It's a very influential game, but not the best, and certainly my least favorite of any game in my collection. Overall, a pretty good adventure title.
This is HIGH-MAC, Silpheed systems logging out. For Great Justice!

Sonic R is alright, but it does take some getting use it. I'm thinking about getting Theme Park because I like the concept, but I haven't heard a lot about it. Seems worth trying.

Fighters Megamix is definitely one of the best and Sonic R is overly underrated!
Mm, agreed on Fighters MEGAMiX. If you wanted a fighting game on the Saturn, there was nothing better.

They are a lot because it was too difficult to choose. And I left some behind. These are my Hottest! =)
True Sybnios, it's hard to choose :)
My favorite games are:
Nights Into Dreams - beautiful looking and sounds so lovely.
It still beats any platform game on any console! Fantastic!
Virtua Fighter 2 - awesome, best fight game ever. This is a classic!
Sega Rally - classic game too. I still wonder why they made only 3 courses and 2 cars? well anyway!
Baku Baku Animal - I love this puzzle game! cute animals, nice colors
and sound
Need For Speed - the original one is much better than new versions!
This game remind me the times when I played with Amiga and Test Drive ;)
Road Rash - Funny figures with streched faces :D Graphics sucks but playability is an excellent! Fast motorcycle game
Virtua Cop 2 - Although the game is over 10 years old, it still looks beautiful! I got a collection of VC1 and VC2 for Playstation 2 ;)
True Pinball - I think this is the best pinball for Saturn. There's 4 different stages, I like most table called Vikings ;)
Manx TT - It's one of my favorite games although there's only 2 courses
Pandemonium - pretty challenging platform game. I recommend!

You're entitled to your opinion blah blah blah... :P but you are wrong. Have you tried Neconomicon? How about Last Gladiators? KaZe made some fantastic pinball games on the 32-bit systems, and Neconomicon is hands down my favorite pinball video game, even today. It's a Japanese only release, but the price has come down quite a bit last I checked. It's well worth it. Last Gladiators got a Western release, but it had a few kinks which were fixed in the (unfortunately again) Japanese only release, Last Gladiators ver. 9.7.

The X-Box one was Panzer Dragoon Orta, that's right. I also wanted to order that one, but I read it has problems with the 4th level on the Xbox 360. I don't own the first Xbox. :(

So far, I'd have to say Legend of Oasis, Albert Odyssey Legend of Eldean, and Magic Knight Rayearth.
Just looking at the shelf (and excluding stuff that's already been mentioned a few times) I really like:
Enemy Zero: Dazzling space-based FMV adventure that worked very well. Extremely claustrophobic atmosphere on a board a spaceship/refinery called the Aki (which was the Nostromo in all but name)
Exhumed (Powerslave in the US): A superb FPS with tight controls, great storyline and ultrasmooth graphics courtesy of the SlaveDriver 3D engine developed by Lobotomy Software. They would go on to pull the same trick with their awesome Duke Nukem and Quake ports.
Saturn Bomberman: Has any here ever managed to get 10 people playing simultaneously? I'm short 1 multitap and a few joypads at the moment. Top, top game anyway.

I'm not much of a bomberman fan, but ever since I heard about that 10 player mode a few years back, I've wanted to try it. Gotta be really crazy.

What gut's me the most is I had a saturn last about 10yrs ago and I had alot of top games for it, Virtua cop, House of the dead, deep fear, enemy zero, The panzer games ( not saga unfortunately) and others and at the time I ended up selling it all when I got skint thinking there cheap anyway,I'll be able to get em cheap when I got some money. Now I've got a Saturn again all the games I want are stupid money on Ebay.:( Ah the folly of youth.

Anyway, my all time favorites are Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Area 51, Sega Rally, Sonic R, Sonic 3D Blast, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Daytona USA, and Nights Into Dreams, Manx TT SuperBike, and Last Bronx which is one of my favorite fighting game.

I used to have Bomberman parties when I had enough friends living locally willing to play. It's a ton of fun and still the best Bomberman around, both in terms of multiplayer and it's fantastic but overlooked single player mode.
I love NiGHTS, but I can't seem to get my hands on it, its too damn expensive!
