Any games you've bought recently that you'd like to share with the collective of this nosy yet spiffy forum?

I Just got 42 All Time Classics for the DS today, its a pretty fun game to just pick up and play any time with loads of stuff to do. Gona try it on wi-fi later. Only £20 too!

My import version of the new DS Castlevania game (Portrait of Ruin) turned up on Friday.

I've been playing it a fair bit and it's another fantastic entry into the 2D Castlevania series. If you like Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow and other 2D releases and thirst for more then this is well worth it.

Monster design is classic and brilliant. All monsters have their own unique and satisfying death animations/explosions/dismemberments.

The game has a 2 character mechanic which spices things up nicely. You play both characters (whip-wielding guy and spell-strong girl) at the same time. You can have them both on screen or not. If the 2nd character is on screen it'll follow you and support your attacks by attacking enemies. However, it'll also suffer damage if it gets hit. Adds a bit more depth to the proceedings - especially in the typically awesome-looking boss fights that litter the game.

The Portraits of Ruin are very much in the game. Dotted around the main castle map are portrait rooms which are entire maps in themselves - each follows a theme. I'm onto my third one which is a kind of Evil Circus theme. The level design of this is just brilliant - as you progress around the map you'll realise the map is circular - at the top of the map the ceiling is the floor and vice versa. All the enemies are true to the orientation of the rooms - so if you're in an upside-down room bats fly upside down and items fall upwards. I've not got there yet but the boss is probably in the dead-center of the map.

Really cool!

I got a bundle of goodies with this as I pre-ordered it. Art book, Castlevania Timeline chart, Music CD, DS Game holder, special stylus - all in a (rather low quality) presentation case that got a bit bent in transit.

Next purchase: one of these (http://www.home-entertainment.toshiba.co.uk/consumer/products.nsf/pages/lcdplasma-lcdfreeview-42wlt66?opendocument)

Final fantasy VII and IX are really nice soundtracks too. IX's probably my Favorite outa all of them, I gotta pick that up some time.

Mega CD is in mint condition pretty much, has all insides for the box, manual, stereo audio lead, MD audio mixer lead, power lead... The lot. I was a bit annoyed though when it arrived, the CD drive was faulty, but luckily I had a spare junk PAL MCD with a perfect working drive, so I swapped them out. I'm keeping it, but I shall speak to the seller about the fact the drive was faulty in the first place...

Also grabbed two MCD games and Virtua Racing!

Heh, I had the same problem. Just got into Saturn Imports and there's classic games all over the place for rediculously cheap prices. I'm done now though as i'm in debt. That's a nice bundle of stuff you got there Mark, I've been thinking about getting a NTSC MD for a while now but it looks like it'll be even longer. Clockwork, well worth getting the MD mate, it looks so much nicer with it's huge 16-BIT logo and red trim. If you've got a PAL MD you could always do the switch mod for 60Hz and JPN region.

I love Japanese MD games, the boxart and manuals are superb. I need to buy more Saturn software next I reckon, but fuck me it's an expensive hobby!

Clockwork edge
03-03-2007, 03:06
Yeah I definitely plan to, I'll prob go for the JPN MD since they Do look friggin nice. May as well get that modded as I have a few PAL games lying around it'd be nice to see at their best. Can't beat JP box, was going to say at least we don't have it as bad as the US but looking at after looking at some Megadrive games they're mostly the same.:P
It's hard being an importer especially when tax is involved, Saturn isn't too bad though it can be addictive with all the bargains. Sega CD must be harder, I've been scared off buying the hardware for ages which prob isn't a good idea since they're just going to get harder to find in decent condition.

Gunstar Heroes, truly a Treasure. ^_^
STH3.... Got S&K to go with that? Thats the best way to play the game--it feels so incomplete otherwise.
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine... I liked that game, but never could get very far. At least it was nice to see some of the cartoon series like robots..
I still think one the best controllers ever without analog sticks is the Sega Six button controller. Its always so awkward with fighting games to have to use top buttons just to get hard punch/kick,etc.

Well I didn't have any pictures of the items, so I just hunted around for them. The gun may very well be a different color. Can't believe how many more pictures of the V2 Saturn were out there. Also hoping I don't feel a dire need to mod my Saturn to play backups. I was reading that V1's are harder to mod.

Best I can tell (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200094226023), the US version of Virtual Cop US came with an orange Stunner Gun (nyko). I've seen both colors online though. I'll find out once everything comes in...

And on Croc (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croc:_Legend_of_the_Gobbos)... I was quite intrigued by the following quotes from Wikipedia about a Saturn rendering bug:

This game is notable for a rather severe bug which made its way into production copies. If the game is inserted into the console prior to power-on then certain models (Croc's head and Dantinis, notably) do not display correctly. To circumvent this, the console should be powered on without a CD in the tray and the game inserted after power-on. The bug was caused by a hardware register in the Saturn's rendering chip which is left uninitialized by the game. The Saturn operating system initializes this register if powered on without the CD inserted. This issue was not found during Sega's testing as the special test Saturn consoles are initialised through a boot disk before loading the game under test, which itself initializes the register. Because of the bug the PlayStation and PC version is considered to be superior.

I'm kinda looking forward to seeing what on earth they are talking about.

If it's the bug I think it is, only Croc's eyes will appear during gameplay.

hehe Weird, I don't really remember that. Maybe the PAL version got
fixed or maybe i just never noticed. Pretty good game anyway, bit simple but pretty tricky and If you don't enjoy NiGHTS there will be a lynch mob waiting for you here!

I dunno about backups but since you're in the US you can get a 4 in 1 cart and play imports without modding at least.

I got an orange one too so I guess it's probably the offical lightgun's color

Yeah after searching through Ebay most of the US guns seem to be red/orange. PAL got blue ones for some reason.

the official NTSC-J lightgun was black in colour;)

Black suits the Saturn better. Although the Arcade guns were Blue and Red/orange, wonder why we all got different colours.

OK I'm posting a pic of the auction goodies that came in. I keep getting distracted by playing NiGHTS. That game is addictive. I'm so glad I have a Wii coming from E-Bay. I really want to play NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams on the Wii when it comes out.

http://www.radiosega.net/images/posts/346522470.jpg

Looks like the gun was blue and for one reason or another and I must have one of the systems not affected by the Croc bug (or a later revision of the game?).

My overall opinion after playing Saturn for the first time... It really feels like playing DOS VGA games on a console system. NiGHTS was about the only one of the games that really made me feel like there was a first generation 3D accelerator in the system. Out of all the games I got, NiGHTS is clearly my favorite. The rest I wasn't all that wild about. Daytona had pretty good control but I don't know how much of that country folk "Try to go easy on the car" voice I could stomach... It felt very Genesis at times--the "Gentlemen Start Your Engines" screen so felt that way. Virtua Cop was OK, but I managed to snag Virtua Cop Elite on the PS2 which includes Virtua Cop 1 & 2. I would much rather be playing 2.

One odd thing I noticed though. Both NiGHTS and Virtua Cop had "Not for Resale" on the CD. I can imagine the gun came with Virtua Cop, but was NiGHTS really a Saturn bundled game? Or perhaps it was bundled with the "3-D" controller? Speaking of the controller--I like it aside from how huge it is. I wish a modern system would make an analog stick in the same manner. Probably won't though since it seems to wear out my thumb faster. :) The least they could do is keep the XYZ, ABC layout somewhere. That is perfect for many classic fighting games. I miss the Genesis 6-button controller. ;)

There was a NiGHTS bundled with the controller, but that was a standard size jewel case. I'm certain.

Yeah... At least they added detailed seller ratings (http://pages.ebay.com/help/feedback/contextual/leaving-detailed-seller-ratings.html) recently. Positive, Negative & Neutral just doesn't cut it for some sellers. I'm glad to see one of the categories is "How reasonable were the shipping and handling charges?". Now maybe people will start feeling the burn from unreasonable S&H.

Now if they only had a way to let you view feedback from worst feedback to best. Takes forever to find negative/neutral feedback sometimes.

I'm selling off the vast majority of my PAL-UK Sega games, because I'm buying Japanese so there's no point owning two copies of one game! I'm only keeping a dozen PAL DC games such as Shenmue, since they're all language heavy.

Still, all the money made from selling is going back into buying more...

Well firstly I am so glad to see my account got activated as I never got a confirmation email and had to message SegaMark to find out what was wrong. Anyway's I purchased quite a few things with the extra money I am making this month with it being the busy time of year with my occasional part-time job (I have full time work, I just blow the money I make from part-time job on stuff). Firstly I got http://segagagadomain.com/saturn16/chaosremixed.htm for my Saturn. It was the last Saturn light gun game I was missing. Next I purchased a Justifier Gun and a JVC X'eye to replace my Gen 1 and Sega CD with. I got a great deal of $60.00 for the X'eye. I also picked up a NEC PC-FX and a Turbo Duo (with 3 contorllers and a 5 player multitap). Anyway's it's gaming month for me though I am going to get some motorcycle parts with my last check this month from my part-time job.

Also both consoles are region and copy protection free so playing backups won't be a problem.

While not a true purchase I recently gave a friend an old ATI All in Wonder 9700 Pro I had lying around and he gave me an old Panasonic Toughbook Cf-27 It's a 300mhz system with 128mb ram and a 6gig HDD. The ram is upgradeable to 320 and the HDD to 30gig. Right now I have it running Kega Fusion (SMS, GG, SG, SCD and 32X) Bgb (GB/GBC), NeoPop (NG Pocket), Zsnesw, and FCEUltra (NES). I don't think it can handle anything to much more powerful. So it's my second "little" (used loosely) emulation system (first being the PSP) but the nice thing about this is I can easily play with friends that don't have a PSP on a decent sized screen. I'm going to have to do some real learning on Mame and figure out what this can handle and get the rom sets for it.

It's a great soundtrack, but not as good as Sonic Adventure 1's. I don't like Knuckle's music very much. SA2 as a game is good, but recently I've decided the first one is far better. I hated changing between characters constantly on SA2.

Sonic Adventure 2's soundtrack always had this extra tint to it to me, not sure, but it's tracks like Biolizard's that I love.

That's quite interesting actually as I really liked Knuckles' music in SA2. Note that I use the term music - the rapping is generally terrible but musically his tracks are very good (Death Chamber being a classic example of great music with terrible vocals). However, it isn't too bad in Meteor Herd, which, incidentally, is my favourite track in SA2.

Okay iTunes wont pick the information up but the tracks are perfect! New Dreamcast scart came today and I'm just waiting on my 360, Halo 3 and Sonic '06 for it, and of course, the one that will be played more, Sonic Adventure 2!

Double post, sorry but forgot to mention, went out to the town with my care worker and £8 in my pocket (skint after Sonic Riders) and went into Gamestation, now normally I thought, wont be anything for £8, but how wrong I was. I lost my Splinter Cell 1 disc somewhere and haven't actually looked for it so I bought another copy, why? Saves time and energy! I swear it does! Anyhoos it wasn't a bad price, came up as £0.99, gotta love it when new consoles come out, prices crash! ^_^

The Keyboard manias are Konami music games played on a 24 claviature keyboard, the beatmania dadada game is also a konami music game and is played on a computer keyboard. The Gundam game is well Gundam, big mechs tearing shit up. All of them are Japanese PS2 games I forgot to mention.

If they're any good that depends on what type of games you like I suppose, the keyboard mania games are really good. beatmania dadada is mostly a joke really while the Gundam game is quite fun, especially if you've seen the movie.

The slim PSP isn't as flimsy as I was worried it might be. Aside from the L & R buttons being cheap, the rest of the unit seems quite solid and very light. Game load times are pretty reasonable, but I never played them on the fat PSP without the memory cache so I dunno. The screen is sooo big and Sonic Rivals so seems like what Sonic R should have been. The Sega Genesis collection is even better than the version on PS2... I so wish I had a friend with a PSP--they have this "actively join a game" feature so that you can connect to your friends PSP playing something in the middle of playing wirelessly. And the emulation is quite good and I like the screen resolution options (Original, Streteched (scaled), Full Screen).

About the only thing that I found cheezy was that you need a memory stick to do firmware upgrades. The firmware upgrade I didn't have added some important features--which is kind of odd since the black PSP slims are hot off the shelf. One key feature I remember--it adds the ability to listen to music while viewing pictures.

In the end, I think I've found the best portable version of Sonic The Hedgehog 1 & 2 around. I'm happy!

I have to wait until morning to order but as soon as 7am comes by I'm on the phone for one. Sonic should make the dentists seem easier. But on a serious note, this PSP, although I generally hate anything to do with Playstations, might be able to keep me happy for a long time, assuming SEGA release loads more collections and games like they have! Before I forget, is the original Outrun on the collections as a hidden game? ^_^

OK that didn't make much sense to me. Since when did supermarkets start carrying video games? I've seen a few select ones rent in the past, but its not common anymore.

Are you thinking of some kind of Sonic Jems Collection candy instead of the video game Sonic Gems Collection? Also you'll be looking forever if you are trying to find Sonic Gems Collection for the PS2 in the United States. They only released that version for Japan and Europe. In the United States, Sonic Gems Collection is a Game Cube exclusive.

Nope. Sonic Gems Collection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Gems_Collection) and Sonic Mega Collection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Mega_Collection) are two separate games. And my most recent purchase...

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this game today. I've updated my wishlist (http://www.radiosega.net/forum/showthread.php?p=7090#post7090) and will let you know what I think on the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games thread (http://www.radiosega.net/forum/showthread.php?t=374) a bit later after I unwrap the game and play.

Recent gaming purchase?

Alien Soldier on the VC. This game is so freaking fun. And hard even on easy. The only problem is on boss basically CAN'T die!

Soon though... (In about ~7 days) I'm going to be getting.... Warhammer 40K: Squad Command for the DS. Don't own a PsP but I doubt the game would be any different.

Endless Ocean on the Wii. Not really a game as such but its really relaxing to play after you had a really bad day at work.

Good deal but I'm sure Tomb Raider 5 is the same as Tomb Raider: Chronicles and there isn't a game called tomb raider 4 or 6.

Thanks for spotting that mate, missed the numbers with 3 and 5 (Chronicles) and didn't put the title in for the 6th.

Recently I bought VF5 on the 360 and Sega Arcade Gallery on the GBA.
Next up in line are Sega Ages Virtual On and perhaps a certain olympics game on the Wii:)

I picked up a used PSP for $35 exclusively for emulating purposes. Though it does have some good gems in it's library.

I decided to get it after I realized it was cheaper than a Nomad.

PSP slim, a 4gb memory stick for it and my favourite game at the moment for it Puyo Pop Fever. Bought the lot earlier (PSP and memory stick from Ebay, Puyo Pop Fever from Amazon.)

$50 with a free $25 gift certificate at Toys 'R Us. I even got the Commemorative Launch Coin for reserving my copy even though they didn't mention that. Clearly the best deal on Super Mario Galaxy.

Needless to say, my Toy 'R Us was sold out on the game as well as many things under or near $25. I will probably wait a week or two before spending my gift card. I was most likely to buy my last Wii remote, but they were sold out.

Oh man you so lucky. I only got the game itself without the coin. But I got a poster from a friend who works where I bought the game.
