Being in a Dreamcast mood, I decided to check out the Sega Smash Pack: Volume 1 I saw the other day in the store (http://www.radiosega.net/forum/showthread.php?p=7352#post7352)...

Well I think I might have found a version of Sonic The Hedgehog (Genesis) emulated even worse than the Game Boy Advance port!

And it started subtlety before the title screen. Hmmm. That Sega logo singing was a bit deep voiced. Now the title screen. Ohs noes!

On title screen, Sonic is overlapping the title banner! Such a common early Genesis emulator problem. Never thought I'd see Sega selling any bundle making this mistake. Even though the web pages for the XBOX 360 arcade port (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/s/sonicxboxlivearcade/default.htm) show this problem, they were nice enough to fix it before the final version. Even the Game Boy Advance port got this much right.

It only got worse. Best I can describe it... It was a properly emulated Green Hill Zone with sound that had been dumbed down to 8-bit. Here. Why not have a YouTube sample of Starlight Zone?

OK now that you've have a warm up, why not check out the other titles from the Smash Pack (http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=benstylus&search_query=smash). With the exception of Sega Swirl and Virtua Cop 2, this Pack is a bust.... No wonder why they didn't come out with a sequel.

So what is your opinion? You'll probably agree with me that the sound truly sucks on the Genesis emulator bundled with the Smash Pack. I was excited to see the titles they bundled, but so disappointed to see how poorly emulated the sound was.

Why do you think Sega let this one out the door? It was so late in the game that it really didn't matter since the Dreamcast was end of life and it would make a few quick bucks? If that's the case, what was the reasoning for the subpar (but better than this--well except for the frame rates) Sonic The Hedgehog on the Game Boy Advance?

Okay I have to say, that seems horrendous! How did that even happen? Sound worse than a Master System, graphics that don't even look like the originals, the programmers should be marched outside and shot. How the hell did this even happen? I'm at a loss for words... -_-

Most soundtracks are really funny emulated, that's right. I mean, did you listen to the Golden Axe sound ??? I really had to laugh. :P But whatever...this is the only Mega Drive / Genesis compilation on Dreamcast and I'm sure fans are lucky to own it. So am I.... And besides this...you'll find the one and only "Virtua Cop 2" US-Game on it. It wasn't sold seperately. So actually I don't think the "Sega Smash Pack Volume 1" is that bad. But of course, it's not the big game fans wished it to be.

The Smash Pack was a mess. Virtua Cop was a port of the bloody PC version...

To me the emulator seems like the sample rate for the sound is lower so it sounds awful, probably a bunch of awful programmers who did it on the cheap for Sega.

Whats with the sound crackling and the slowdown? And didn't the Genesis one actually have a background?

Actually, I heard that in order to save on budget costs, they just (badly) ported the Megadrive emulator DGen, saving them costs..... and badly messing the whole thing thing up. It's such a shame, it could've been so much better and perhaps have other ones would have followed in it's footsteps....

I have this as well, and when I try to play Virtua Cop it says loading, but not much after that? How can I fix this, it worked on my old Dreamcast, but that one...is gone. Any help would be nice. Thanks.

Maybe its a scratched disc?

It's funny that this thread should get revived because I was just playing this last night. I finally beat Shining Force. Now I'm working on my Gamespite article for it. =)

Try using a boot disc on it, sort of pretend that the game is an import, it worked for me on disc 1 of Skies. I only had to do it once, and the disc worked from then on, good luck!

How would that work on Smash Pack? Do i pick the game and put in the disc?

Put the boot disc in first(I use the Gameshark Lite), follow the prompts, and when instructed swap it for the Smash Pack disc. For some strange reason I had to use it for disc 1 of my non-import copy of Skies just once, and it has worked fine ever since.:)

And that will make Virtua Cop 2 load, cause other games on it work just fine. Sorry, just being sure.

P.S. Where can I get a boot disc?

Sorry but I guess I misunderstood, I thought that the disc did not work at all, not just one game. As far as a boot disc, the Gameshark Lite is on ebay real cheap, only about a Dollar plus shipping. It worked great for all of my Japanese and Pal games to be able to play them on my NA Dreamcast, and as a bonus it also loaded some of my NTSC-U games which would not load. Forgive me for getting your hopes up regarding your copy of Smash Pack Vol. 1, good luck!

Did SEGA Smash Pack ever come out in Europe?

I think it was just North America.

P.S. I actually did get my copy 'fixed,' but Virtua Cop still didn't work. :(

I don't know if it's a fluke or something, but mine all seems to work fine. I checked it again after seeing the vid, and it has the genesis style soundtrack with some slight tweeks, but nothing like that. It's NTSC for North America and everything.
