View Full Version : What MD/GENESIS game are you playing?

I'm going to go play Sonic 3d Blast now, even though it's 3 in the morning XD
Just wondering what cartridges others have dusted off and are playing recently. Also, how many of you have carts that you haven't put in and played yet? I know I'm guilty of a few especially good titles!

Sadly I don't have space for my MD at the moment so that one is stored away. I have 3 consoles in a corner of the bedroom and 2 in the livingroom and my wife think that's enough. Can't understand why!?
But I play Shining Force II on PSP, if that counts.

Recently I was playing Sonic The Hedgehog 2 but I think I might go back and play Sonic Spinball for a while. I really enjoyed playing that in the past. (Despite the fact I couldn't get past The Machine).

Haha, TF73! My girlfriend understands! I think....
And no, PSP does not count! XD

What level is that, Dr Shaneman? I know the farthest I got was beginning of Lava Powerhouse [or the second level]. I kept dying there since if you fell in between the flippers you died. This would be a given, but the first level gave you a stand or barrel to save you, so you were condition to feel safe!

Oh, and I actually didn't end up playing Sonic 3D Blast. I'll do that later. What I played, and finally beat the first level of, was Battletech: A Game of Armored Combat.

Dr Shaneman
20-11-2007, 11:12
The level after Lava Powerhouse where you need 5 emeralds instead of 3. I didn't die on it but i kept getting bored of being on that level for ages trying to get all of the emeralds. The most i ever got was 3, even to this day.

Sonic Spinball is such a ball-ache to complete, it's rock solid. I could fly through it as a child but not any more. Guess it' true that you get worse at games as you get older.

When I've been back in Warrington at weekends I've been mostly playing Sonic & Knuckles and Golden Axe 2. Has anyone played Golden Axe 2 at all? It's definitely the greatest one of the three.

Toejam and Earl, well it's a solid platformer, hard but good. Worth time looking into with well animated sprites.
Has anyone played Golden Axe 2 at all? It's definitely the greatest one of the three.
Don't think I have, remember playing them though when the MegaDrive was still the latest thing, I should dig it up on my ROM partition. Golden Axe I remember being incredible when you first play it.

Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage 2, though I'm playing them on XBLA. I've gotten all the achievements, so all I can do now is try and get a high score on the leaderboards, which is kind of hard to do considering people cheat in order to get 9999999 points. At the moment though, I'm ranked 150th or something in Sonic 2, and I'm in the top 50 for Versus matches online.

Isn't this new thread a bit redundant...? We already have a "Currently Playing (http://www.radiosega.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6)" thread to let people summarize all they play--not just MD/Genesis. -_-

Actually, I got better as I got older. Especially with the 16-bit Sonic games. I remember being a kid and having a friend be able to beat all the games without cheats. I, on the other hand, resorted to looking up cheats in Tips&Tricks CODEBOOK to make it through. Today I have no need of cheats and great all by myself!

Hmmm, that thread looks a bit familiar. I'm sorry I didn't look it up, but I think this thread is warranted for the specialty of MD/Games. I mean, only three games on that page are for MD/Genesis, and I didn't want to hear about all the next-gen consoles. I guess I could have put it in the tail end of that other tread...

Guess here is where we can get Mark's and 32x's opinion... Currently playing... Should it be broken up into individual platforms or should it be all in one? Both isn't an option--its too redundant. :P

Personally, I'd rather have all currently playing content stay in one thread and treat it like the wishlist thread (http://www.radiosega.net/forum/showthread.php?t=503). Its not like we go about making hardware and software wishlist threads. ;)

I agree, but only because the wishlist thread is a good example, both software and hardware, all platforms and everything else contained in a single thread. Does make everything a lot simpler. Merge this in with Currently Playing?

Merge this in with Currently Playing? I'd say we'll wait for Mark's final approval on this and if so, he can do the merger. If he's too busy, just assign one of us to do it. No point in saying "yes we should merge it" and all of us trying to do it at once. ;)

ZING! Thank you Mark for agreeing. I especially like the focussed part (seems to have two spellings...). I'm just kidding.

Anyway, I think I'm going to go crack open my new box of Flashback: The Quest For Identity. It says: "The CD-Rom game in a cartridge". I've heard good things, so I'll report back later. [first I should get something to eat though...this forum has been all-consuming as of late]

Does it necessarily have to be so clean cut with this one. I understand you want to be efficient and cut down on duplicate, but what if we had both console-specific playing threads and a "general playing" thread. Oh, well, anyway, last night I played some Bubba 'N' Stix, which is a very odd game to say the least. I like it though, and some of the music is starting to sound better. The puzzles are very creative for sure.

Also, I finally put in my Sonic 3D Blast cart and played through the first area. Got four emeralds and was surprised how easy it was. I wonder what happens in this Sonic game when I get all of them? Anyone know?

Nothing special, you just get to fight the final boss. You can't turn super or anything and you win lives in the special stages.

I've got some mad scores on that game. I think the farthest I got was the 8th boss. And I did all that in one sitting. I guess I was just in the groove, but I really like that game. A bunch of the latter foes, around 6-8, I beat in the first minute!

It sounds by the name that it is a game later in the series. Just wondering, since I like to play titles in their chronological order. Thanks.

The last MD game I played was Ecco the Dolphin a few months back. I had the game on release as a child and never understood the game or how to play it... so I used to swim around admiring the graphics and nothing else.

It was my birthday and had a choice between Streets of Rage 2 or Ecco! So I went for shimmering Ecco, bad choice for my age group.

Anyway since replaying it for the first time a few months back I really enjoyed it. I understand what to do now, and finally after about 14 years I've finally finished the game with no cheats or anything!

you should have seen the box, it was still in mint condition!

i enjoyed the game so much i bought ecco the dolphin 2 the tides of time from ebay really cheap. not got round to playing it yet, i'll give itt another 14 years!

Ugh, I was just playing Vectorman, and boy was it a power session. I went from the beginning all the way to the Underground level. That third monkey-boss just killed me. Anyone know how close I was to the end?

p.s. I had an end score of 532410 on difficulty level medium/wicked, so I'm still happy with that, and all in one sitting!

I'm playing Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 3, but mostly Aladdin! I love the way Aladdin feels, looks, and plays! Sonic 1 is fun too. I beat it two times just now in like, 12 minutes? Sonic 3 is challenging to collect the emeralds, but addicting otherwise.

7Force, sorry, but that doesn't count! It has to be on the original console to have the true experience :).

Whether you like it or not--most cases a game emulated on a console or computer is still a Mega Drive/Genesis game. Now I'm not so sure I'd want to count the Game Boy Advanced Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis as a Genesis title...

I've not played that, and to be honest, from what I've read about it, I think I'd rather keep it that way.

Another version of Sonic I reckon I'll skip on is the iPod one. Well, I would pass on it, if I actually owned an iPod, which I don't. My MP3 player just plays music, which is why I've got it :p Don't want an MP3 player that shoehorns needless features onto it.

You my friend are alright. I hate iPods myself. The general reason being you can't just drag and drop files onto them and you have to have iTunes to put songs on them, plus the fact they have features you will never use. Anyway sorry for going off topic but I needed to let that out mates.

I'm going to play Toe Jam & Earl 2: Panic on Funkotron. Thats one of my treasured games. People listen up:
I sold my Megadrive back in 97 to a couple who had two young kids as it was ideal for them as other new consoles were expensive.
My biggest regret was selling it!
But I've bought most of what I had then & always wanted or could never afford or get hold of back in the day i.e. 32x, Sonic 3, etc so my collection is good.
It was this time in 2004 at a Christmas faire in Holbeach Lincs
there was a Megadrive for £20 with about 10-15 games on this charity stall, I already had some of them games but I only wanted it for the Toejam & Earl 2 game.
So I handed over the money the goods were mine.
It wasn't until I got home after playing the game I remembered you can use codes for different levels. I thought I'd have a look to see if the previous owners had jotted any in the book & to my amazement I saw my name scribbled inside the manual with my codes from when I was 10!
I couldn't believe it was my game from when I was a kid now back in my collection!
I loved this game I used to love playing it & still do.
My dad challenged me to win £10 if I could clear the board on columns (another great game I'd come home from school & dad would be playing it. I couldn't get him off it!) So after about 45 mins he said give up your not gonna do it & then I cleared the board! I struggled to get the money off him but with the help of my mum I got it & I said "Can you take me to the local video shop that you could rent & buy Megadrive games" that a friend's mum owned.
So once inside the shop being spoilt for choice as there must of been at least 75-100 titles in there that one just stood out from the rest I think its because of the bright funky cover but the game itself is awesome in every way.
I'm really pleased I've still got something from my Sega years its just ashame I don't have anything else that was mine from then but I'm not the only one who sold their old machine or traded it in for a newer generation console.
If I could turn back time I'd never of sold my Megadrive & all the stuff I had with it, I just hope my old unit is still out there bringing back childhood memories of the person who used to own my current second hand unit.

Sonic on the iPod? Same here: I'll pass on that, at least for now. I second the music bit. People, it's a music player, video and games are nice, but first and foremost the music is king. I mean, once I get my iPod to a point that I'm running out of room, which won't be too far off into the future, I'm going to delete my videos so I have room for my music.

I've booted up, for the SIXTH TIME, Phantasy Star IV on my old Genesis. That game is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE RPG OF ALL TIME!!!!! It had it all: combo moves, morphing enemies, long story, well-rounded characters, big worlds... OMG. XD It's my fourth favorite game EVER. Although the Sly Cooper trilogy takes up the top three slots on my list. Sorry.

Incidentally, with regards to Phantasy Star IV, I know practically EVERYTHING about that game, apart from some of the combo attacks (I'm working on it!) so if you also play that game, and you wanna know how to find something, or beat something, check out my "PSIV Start to Finish (http://www.radiosega.net/forum/showthread.php?t=809)" thread in the Genesis section. I just recently got Vectorman and Sonic 3D Blast at a flea market. Vectorman is still awesome! Funny thing is, in the first screen where Vectorman falls down on the sega logo, you can control him. But I also noticed if you shoot in the upright corner, you can destroy a tv and get a explosion powerup that will freeze the sega logo, lol.
I also played 2 hours straight throught Sonic 3D Blast and still find it easy and fun to play. The music is great and some remind me of other tunes like the theme music it uses is reminiscent of Twinkle Park from Sonic Adventure I believe. Also, it was strange how the last zone had you exit the level through a huge Eggman's nostril and then fight him inside his self? Has anyone played both versions for both Genesis and PC? I believe some things are different like graphics, music, and especially the special stages. Even the chaos emeralds look different.

I have and I own all 3 versions. MD, Saturn and PC. The PC version is just a Saturn port accept they totally redone the special stages and the chaos emeralds were for some reason 10 times bigger than Sonic XD. Also, yes the Saturn and PC has different graphics and music to the MD version. The graphics are beter textured and look better and the music I'll let you decide if you think it's better or not as I like both sets.

Same can be said for the old Puyo's. They were orange and turned yellow when the Fever games were made. I'm not sure why though. Maybe pallete reasons? I know Mega Drive games were fussy on palletes.

Nah that can't be right. I only remember 7 of them... Now I have to check this up with wikipedia...

In the original Sonic the Hedgehog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_%2816-bit%29), the six Emeralds were blue, yellow, red, green, pink and gray. A seventh, purple Emerald was added to the roster in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_2), after which Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_3) replaced the pink emerald with a cyan one, and the yellow Emerald with an orange one. The orange Emerald was reverted back to yellow again in Sonic Adventure, and the colors of the Emeralds have remained essentially constant ever since. with the grey emerald sometimes being rendered as white.

Certain games have used their own unique colors for the emeralds. In Sonic Spinball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_Spinball), they are all blue. In Sonic Battle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Battle), they are all green because they are realy broken shards of the master emerald. In Sonic R (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_R), the Blue Emerald is absent, replaced with an orange one.

huh...I thought there were 8 emeralds in the first game... Must've mistaken it with 6.

Not everyone plays DOS games, if Microsoft weren't total piss ants they would have kept DOS in Windows but after 9.x they dropped it.
Also you don't need it, you can probably find a XP Patch for it.
There is no patch. It doesn't need one for XP but you need VDMSound to get sound card emulation from the DOS version under XP. The 9.x kernel was dropped for the NT one in XP meaning it can't access the SC like 9.x. I use DOSBox on it for both Windows and Linux (yes you can play it on Linux ^_^).

The MD version is like the PC version, harder controls but plays really well. It was a Brazillian only release so if you want the cart you need to do some hunting.

No, I don't believe so. Due to the synth differences, they might have been titled and ordered differently, but not entirely differnt or unique enough to be a difference. I have seen this happen before.

However, if there IS a unique difference in the 2 versions, I will look into that.

I just checked on Wiki, and it originally came out on Mega Drive/Genesis, and the ports weren't released until over a year later, so it could be considered a SEGA game on a technicality :p

Well, there's an interesting case which already exists on RadioSEGA: Power Stone. Both games were originally released on the Dreamcast, but were MUCH later ported on the PSP as a collection. With that in consideration, I will see what ultimately becomes of Earthworm Jim.

Lets get back to Topic.. =o)

My absolute most played game on the Mega Drive is still Shining Force I and II.
I plaxed this as Child by about 10 Times... until my Phantasy Star II and IV-Time. =o)

You can call me freaking Roleplaying-Gamer, but ive played also Sword of Vermillion, about X-times... The Mix of Actionfights, 2D Boss Fights and wandering around was just splendid to me. Bad theres no second game like this, and also that no publishers can port it to new technical Versions. =o)
Would like to see that Game in brilliant 3D Grafics =o)

Sonic was in my Opinion a typical "overnormal" Game. Funny Game for "the Time between". But i never played it that long tima in a row as the other named before.

Enough from me. Are there other "old-school" Roleplaying-Fanatics like me?

I'm currently playing Columns and Flicky, jesus these games are addictive! I go to sleep at night and have nightmares about jewels...

Definitley my favorite puzzler though...I don't generally like them but I'm always up for a game of columns :P best played against someone else. I managed to outlast a friend of mine (I was playing one screen, he failed 3 times and I was still going XD ha)

Columns is a good little puzzler. There are better ones nowadays, but as far as retro ones go it's second only to Tetris.

I'd like to be able to make the grid bigger but that would be my only complaint about Columns :)

Puzzle Quest is awesome  but neither of those games have that addicting quality. I don't suddenly get the urge to have a 5 minute blast of either game.

Tell me about it. Once I played Columns for almost an entire afternoon and reached the score of 20 million points (a big deal for me back then) only to have someone turning me off the console.

As for Flicky I never thought that saving little birds could be so addictive.

Haha, that's awesome :D I can't get very far...I play on easy and manage 30,000 I think? or was it 3,000,000? I don't know  that's on arcade mode

Flicky is on the portable mega drive :D every spare minute I get I'm saving those stupid birds XD

Also, how many of you have carts that you haven't put in and played yet?

Every game I own, I've played. It's how I figured out which ones I no longer wanted to own. XD

BUT right now, I'm sorta randomly flippin' through my games for fun. Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the current order of the day, and it sounds way cooler on my new Logitech speakers. But it won't be long before I return to Phantasy Star IV; I always come back for more, and I've still got 7 or so combo attacks to figure out!

Still wouldn't mind a new one though.

You're right, that would be a challenge... but only because the game is crap.

Rad game, I remember picking it up for the SNES, no box or instructions or anything, I had no idea what the game was about but I picked it up anyway cause of its cool name.

For me it's Sonic 3&Knuckles and Ristar.
I think it's too bad that Ristar never had a follow (can we say that in english?).
I mean that I would like to see a Ristar in a 3d game, on the new consoles.

I play most Genesis games with emulators. Not as great a feeling as playing and actual Genesis; nonetheless, when I do play emulated Genesis, I usually play the original Sonic games (not the spinoffs like Spinball or 3D Blast) including Sonic CD. Another fun game is Gunstar Heroes by Treasure. When I played it, I was like "OMG SO MANY BULLETS!!" It's hella fun and would recommend it to...hmm...say...just about everyone.

I use an emulator myself.
Gunstar Heroes is THE most awesome game evar, and the sequel they brought out for GBA didn't do it justice. Still, I was annoyed when I lost it, it was hella hard to get hold of.
My other faves would have to be Altered Beast, the PS2 remake of which I practically worship (though not as much as GH lol), and I also love Mickey Mouse in World of Illusion. It's a shame the emulator lags doing online 2P, I may never see the "christmas tree level" again :(
