View Full Version : Official Shenmue Thread
NOTICE: By posting in this thread you agree not to even mention the XBOX version. This is purely for the Dreamcast versions which were the absolute best versions of the game. That other port deserves no time. Keep it DC orientated, cheers.
Okay this game is well loved, especially on these forums so I decided to open a thread dedicated to it since none already existed. There is a rule though, if referring to the first two games make sure to hide any spoilers. Other than that, let's hear everything you have to say about the series (epic, saga (choose your own)). :)
EDIT: As a side note, no cheap posts like "Shenmue rules!", make sure your post has something to add to the thread and discussion
OK considering I really didn't give Shenmue a chance, it does make me wonder... Were there any other games included in Shenmue other than Space Harrier (http://www.radiosega.net/forum/showthread.php?p=8384#post8384) and Hang-On? Did they really add value to the game? From what I could tell, you couldn't just pop in the game, start from scratch and expect to be playing those full arcade games in minutes. What do exactly do you need to do to play the games? From some videos I saw, you might have had to do something with a crane game and have some money.
You get a daily amount of Yen from a friend of the family. If you take that Yen into the arcades you can play "mini games". Space Harrier and Hang-On are included but there are others you can play like darts. There's also a "gumball machine" (I think that's what it's called in America) that gives you collectible toys. An example is different SEGA characters that you can view from a menu, Ryo makes comment's on what he get's too. Good past time in the game and one I loved playing with. Might be worth of note that you can win SEGA Saturn games and play them on Ryo's Saturn. Never again should a game of Hang-on cost to play! Assuming you win it of course. :)

Shenmue 2 had OutRun and After Burner - I'm certain.
Anyway, over at NTSC-uk.com Shenmue is December's "Reply Appreciate" game - so I'll be playing both through December myself.
I've never finished Shenmue 2, so this is the perfect chance to do it. Shenmue 1 was superb.
Shenmue 2 had OutRun and After Burner - I'm certain.
Yup it did. Wow did I spend a lot of money on those games. Hard to find though, t***s are located in an abandoned building. Or at least After Burner was. Tricky to get to so make sure you bang in all the cash you can.

Is this anti-spoiler or censorship? I'm struggling to think of an obscene word that is formatted like that.
I've been meaning to take a crack at fixing the [spoiler] BB code here on RadioSEGA but haven't gotten around to it yet. -_-
Is this anti-spoiler or censorship?
Censorship, I thought I would spare everyone of one of my bad bad words. Mark should be able to figure out what it means though. If you still want to find out, PM me. But yes they are hard to find. After Burner I remember was hard to get to, very tricky. But the game was more than words alone. Shenmue is really that good, it will leave you speechless.
Censorship, I thought I would spare everyone of one of my bad bad words. Mark should be able to figure out what it means though. If you still want to find out, PM me.
Nah its not that important. I don't need to increase my obscene word count. Knowing my luck, I wouldn't be able to guess anyhow as it may be a regional (UK) word.
That other port deserves no time.
I'm guessing Mark feels that way about the XBOX port as well?
Yeah he does, and I thought I was the only one with the issues. Well Shenmue is a Dreamcast game, it just has a "minor" port on the *shivers*. Think we should leave it at that. The Dreamcast versions are the better one's, and the game belongs soley on the Dreamcast, ah they were so made for each other.
Dreamcast + Shenmue
For all those who saw the Saturn version and want to complain about my comment: Yes yes I know it was originally for the Saturn but the Dreamcast got it so shoo! :P

Shenmue... easily one of the most revolutionary games of all time, I've spent countless hours on it just collecting toys or looking at the scenery, personally I find the graphics to be the absolute best ever. We've advanced... yes, but for the hardware and for the time, it couldn't have been matched.
But whats with the hate for the Xbox version? That actually came to America, and besides, Shenmue II on the 360's Xbox Original's program may be the absolute last chance we have for Shenmue III.
I disregard Shenmue Online, I much rather play the abysmal Sonic 360 or Shadow for the rest of my life then hear of that crap ever again.

Shenmue is still one of my favorite games of all time, if not my favorite...
For me it was more then a game it was an experience.
I waited months and months on end for it, Read about it in the Official Dreamcast mag here in the UK and got so hyped for it that the night before it released in the UK I didn't sleep a wink I was so excited.
I remember picking it up with a friend going back to my house putting it in the Dreamcast and we sat in ore watching the opening movie with Shenhua...
From then on the game just got better and better, Loved every second of it and now I've set up www.shenmuecampaign.com (http://www.shenmuecampaign.com) to get the series finished.
I love this game. I used to played it very often (never finished though :P). I like that they included classic games like Space Harrier and Hang On.

Played the game and liked it, but I still think they should have finished it on the 2nd one.
One of my favorite lines from the first one is "Where is the mirror?"
"I am not going to tell... the likes of you."
Err... Shenmue 2 was, if anything, slightly better on the XBox. In fact it and Jet Set Radio Future were the reason I bought an XBox... Not that it matters anyway, it was great that Shenmue got a chance to hook in punters who missed it on the Dreamcast the first time round. Shenmue 1 was better then Shenmue 2 though...Shenmue 2 isn't quite as fun to replay as Shenmue 1.
If you mess around on YouTube for a bit, you can see footage of some "deleted locations" from Shenmue 1 - although mostly these are just slightly altered locations from the finished game--like a slightly different Yamanose for example.

I will admit Shenmue 1 is better, but Shenmue 2 is better in a sense that you don't have to wait. If that makes sense.
I will admit Shenmue 1 is better, but Shenmue 2 is better in a sense that you don't have to wait. If that makes sense.
If you mean in the sense that in Shenmue 1, you often have to wait around until a certain time for events to happen, sometimes waiting days in-game time, as opposed to in Shenmue 2, where waiting around is minimal and you can get on with most things right away, then yes it makes perfect sense.
That's what bugged me about Shenmue 1, I far prefer the locations from Shenmue 1, but damn if it got tedious trying to kill 2 days in-game time to trigger a cutscene! Not to mention that Shenmue 1 seemed a bit more interactive to me, you had more stuff that can be opened or examined.
Not to say that Shenmue 2 is a bad game, not at all, I'm just nitpicking really but it's often the little things like that, that can hamper an otherwise perfect game.

Yes I do mean that and you are right. I also didn't like the fact that you had to wait.
The wait in Shenmue 1 was one of the best parts of the game. It not only allowed you to explore your surroundings, it also enabled you to do other things such as feed the cat, collect the toys, play some games, try to win Saturn games to play at the house. If anything it added to the realism and added a much needed break without having you to move on too quickly. Shenmue 2 moved too quickly for me, I found less and less time to play After Burner or just walk around China and enjoy the surroundings. In Shenmue 1, it was slower but allowed you to fully interact with the environment. While I was waiting I improved my fighting ability, well it was only natural as you face a lot of opponents later on.
It might just be me, but I always found that I had more to do in the second one. It felt bigger, so I always wanted to explore a bit more, whereas Shenmue kinda felt a bit restrictive.
I did spend an awful amount of time on the capsule collecting though XD

I agree but I also found Shenmue 2 quite entertaining. The fact is the game wouldn't force you to wait (like in the first one) but you could make your progress at your own pace.
And playing all the mini games, the different dart matches, or the street games where you had to place your bet, or even Afterburner, was ace. It definitely had lots more to to than Shenmue 1. You just had to learn to make the best of your time.
Personally, I always found myself wanting to reach the end of the story and leaving the rest behind!
Shenmue 2s ending annoyed me and not just because of the cliffhanger. The thing I liked most about the game is its sense of realism and then from out of nowhere freaking flying swords.
FLYING SWORDS!

I see what you mean (no, I'm not seeing flying swords...) and I felt that too, but let's think about it for a second: Mirrors? Dragon and Phoenix? Sure, it sounded pretty real from the start!

No one had to say these mirrors had to do anything. Lan-di was probably just a nutcase searching the supernatural for more power.
Broken Sword pulled this kind of crap (twice!) but I forgive Broken Sword for being perfect...infact both games were perfect.
Both games? You're ignoring the two 3D games then? :p
Anywho, I can't recall the flying swords thing. I must've glossed over it when I was playing it.
Both games? You're ignoring the two 3D games then? :p
Hah! Next you'll be telling me there's a 4th Monkey Island.
Funnily enough...:p
Oh, and just to further shock you, Sam and Max was brought out in 3D too. And it might be coming to Xbox Live Arcade. Technology today, eh?
Anywho, when was the flying sword bit?

Yea but the new Sam and Max games are actually good.
It's the end of Shenmue 2, you know Ryo and that other chick are in that cave and do...something and swords start floating about.
Ohh..right, yeah. Then the game stops XD
My favourite part was the daily forklift race in the first one. I spent ages at that job, just for the race. It was awesome :D
After a while I started to hate those stupid races, I just wanted to do get the work over with so I can get back to scaring the shit out of dock workers by mentioning the Mad Angels.
Nah, I liked them. I actually tried finishing in all the various positions so I'd get the different Forklift truck capsule toys.
Quite sad, but hey, I needed them for my collection dammit!

Guess I'm not the only sad person here! :P I did that too. I loved those races.
And (I know this is stupid) but I liked the "airing the books" minigame in Shenmue 2!
Hmm..airing the books? Which bit was that?
I know it sounds funny, but I have such a crap memory when it comes to Shenmue II. I can remember stuff from Shenmue quite easily, though. Sometimes.

It was when you were in the temple and had to carry big piles of books to the outside while avoiding letting them hit the floor.
Oh right, that does sound a little familar, actually.
Hmm...if I'm gonna keep my Dreamcast locked up forever, I should look into picking up Shenmue II on the cheap for Xbox. Least I can play it then.

Best to just bring the DC out of retirement. Beats the XBOX anyway, even the Shenmue II port to it. Yes your read that correctly, the Dreamcast is better than an XBOX, XBOX 360 and PS3 too. ^_^
Lol, well that answers that one then :p
Just need to find a Scart cable now..and somewhere to put my beloved DC.

Surprised you like the DC version since it doesn't have English voices.
I didn't mind it actually. At first it was annoying, because I didn't think I owned an English language version, but then I got into it.
It helped give the game a bit of culture...and it got rid of Ryo's annoying voice.
Shenmue is much better with the original voices. The acting in overall is much better. The english voices sounds static!

Yeah! Static and lacked feeling.
"Ine-san... are you ok?... (two hours later) Ryo-san... I must cook you... dinner"
"Ryo... you missed school today...
Nozo...mi... did you miss me?
Not really, I was just saying."
^ Pretty good impression there.
Was the Xbox port of Shenmue II handled the same way when it came to the English language track, or was it a little better?

The XBOX port just added a camera and some lighting, you wont beat the Dreamcast original. I only bought the XBOX version at one point because I couldn't find the DC original. 2nd best is all it's worth. Other systems don't deserve it anyway, everything from the Dreamcast up (Gamecube, PS2, PS3, XBOX, 360, Wii) is nothing but crap. -_-
Hm..I somehow doubt that a Shenmue III will come out on Dreamcast though, even though it really should.

Well it's obviously not coming out on the DC, but maybe Shenmue III will be a nice gift to people who paid out for these "things".
Mm, it would be nice to see it come out eventually, even if it's as a book or a film. I just want the end of the story, dammit!

If they done it in comic format would you still get it? Knowing that no one flips them to read left to right anymore.
You're talking Japanese comics then :P Erm, I might've done, it depends on whether I could be arsed to go against convention and read a book back to front.

Weird, but funny. Helps that he's probably one of my favourite characters in the first game.

I love the game to death. And it still is one of my top 3 favorite games of all time. I'm just afraid that if I play it too much Fuku-san's voice will drive me to commit suicide.
- On a side not I still read my shenmue guide with all of the character descriptions. It details everyone down to cats and pigeons. The depth of the characters in this game was always amazing.

Your guide sounds a bit sad though..detailing pigeons? Jesus..hope the people who wrote that got a life afterwards.
It's been 7 years since we had Shenmue, 7 years we have waited for the story to continue and nothing but this:
The final chapters of the Shenmue saga have been finished already, but never went into production.
I'm opening this up to public opinion. Yes or no. Your own thoughts and or opinions. Shenmue 3. It has to happen but we don't know when. Personally the wait is killing me, think it's coming out? When? Platform? All in one chapter? Let's hear what you think of the 3rd installment. ^_^
Dr Shaneman
24-04-2008, 00:46
Well, I haven't played as much Shenmue as most people have on here but if a 3rd did come out it would most likely be a 360 & PS3 title I think. I just couldn't see it as a Wii title, unless it was brought out for all 3. A 3rd installment is a good idea though to continue the story.

Ahh! Fuku-san and his rambling speeches! Yes, those nights dreaming about Ryo being defeated by Lan-Di and saying as his last words "Must... kill... Fuku-san"... But I digress.
A third Shenmue, although unlikely, should come out to end the story and please the fans. Naturally, the PS3 and 360 come as obvious choices. But the Wii may be a nice platform for the game with the remote and nunchuk control system. You could do those martial arts moves yourself instead of just hitting the buttons.
Argh no god, anything but the Wii. Resident Evil has proven twice that Quick Time Events on the Wii suck, and they're such a big part of Shenmue.

Not the Wii, eh? Ok, I'm willing to buy an Xbox for this one. ;)
Yeah, some bits of Shenmue would work on the Wii, like the boxing mini game, but there's far too much that wouldn't work...like the rest of it :p

Are you listening SEGA/AM2 you guys need to make Shenmue 3!
They know fans are desperate for a 3rd release. They even have the entire story completed. But far as I'm concerned, SEGA is falling apart from the inside. They'll be either waiting until they have the ability to release a new one (keep in mind it costs about the same to make Shenmue as it does a Hollywood blockbuster), and they seem to be building on their other names to see if they can rebuild some sort of capital. Looks to be a game of waiting at the moment. If we ever see it again that is.

The thing that annoys me and probably everyone else is just the fact that they know the fans of the game need some sort of closure but they won't tell us ANYTHING about it's future and if shenmue even has a future. I genuinley can't fatham why they can't even tell us if they will make it or not. I think i may have heard somewhere yuji said he wants to do it. but that was years ago.
P.s. Is this thread a little old to be posting on?

If the MMO meant that there would be no Shenmue III, then no I wouldn't, but Shenmue Online was meant to be filler untill III came out.
Though I guess it doesn't matter either way since neither have come out and probably never will.

Yeah, course it is. We do it with everything. Just goes to show how much attention we pay.

From what I read, Shenmue Online was never supposed to come to Europe or the Americas regardless, it was either China only some other Eastern Asian country. I honestly can't remember at the moment. Still, I would have at least have taken that over getting nothing but Shenmue I and II.
I think it was China and Korea, if I remember rightly. Might've also been Hong Kong, seeing as they like to be known as an independant state sometimes.
