Ah yes, Sonic X-treme. A canceled game with an intresting reason why. 3-d, characters, and moves that were sopposed to be but weren't.Read on to find out more

Back story.

This game was origanally supposed to compete with nintendo's Super Mario 64.It was simalar to it being that they were both 3-d.Sonic was supposed to have new moves.

spinbash- a quick foward attack like the spindash, but modified

spinslash-a 360 degree attack in midair

ring throwing-lose a ring to throw at an enemy

power ball- an attack designed to hit an enemy below you

super bounce- a jump thats high, but has less control

ring sheild- sacrifice rings for a sheild

sonic boom- a 360 degree attack used after the ring sheild.

Demo

First, the first area is called Jade Gully. The music, get ready for this, sounded almost exactly like the japenese version of sonic cd's good future of quartz quadrant! This area also shows how the area acted, by taking off parts of the stage so it wouldn't overload. Also, as the time decreased, the score increased. You also got 21 lives.

There were no enemes, just these diamonds(which just propeled you) rings and flickes.

characters.

two additions, metal sonic mach 3 and tiara
were supposed to be here tiara wasbasically supposed to be Sonics love interest, or another Amy Rose.
msm3 was supposed to bean upgraded metal sonic.there were 3-d bosses, too, like Nack.

The beginning of the end.

it is a looong story, so i'll give you the short version.in japan, sega was working on NIGHTS. STI wanted the engine, and got it.Yuji found out, and wanted it back, saying he would quit. He got it, and sega of america had to start over. They did, sega of japan liked it, took the engine that soa made, and told them to start over.Again! Someone quit, so a guy worked for 7-8 weeks, but it was too much. They scrapped it all. Two people worked on a pc version, but it too was scrapped. In it's place was sonic 3d blast. So ended sonic X-treme.

so, there's Sonic X-treme.A little known fact is that there was a disc which sold for $2500 through eBay.

And for fun, you can even read this thread (http://www.radiosega.net/forum/showthread.php?t=201)... One of these days I'll play the Saturn demo. ;)

Wow, the missing link of SEGA's Sonic universe. I heard that the levels were this giant pipe that you could run along on the side and ceiling of the circular room. I guess it was an anti-gravity level set up.

Everyone has to keep an eye out on this one. Why? Because a lot are faked by hackers with no real time on their hands. As tech demos, their good. But a lot of videos are fake, so careful what you believe yes? :)

A very early version of this was recently ripped and released on the internet. I have it on my PC, it's just a small area of Jade Gully which you can run around in and the engine isn't very good seeing as it's such an early version (I'd say probably pre-alpha) but it's still an interesting find. I'll go look for the link to it now if it's still up. It's nothing like what some of the videos on the later stages of production were like, I don't even think it's using the fisheye camera.

EDIT: Well, I can't find it but if somebody wants it I could host it for them. Bear in mind that to play this you'll either need a Saturn that can play discs burned from your computer (either a chipped Saturn, or I've heard there's a certain way you can "trick" the Saturn into reading it.. dunno how though) OR you'll need a Saturn emulator on your PC - this is what I do and it works fine. If I host it I'll stick in a readme with instructions with it... that is, if I can remember how to do it >_>. I'll put links in the readme to programs you need to burn the ISO file and the Saturn emulator I use.

Used it, theres torrents on trackers for the leaked code. Just load the ISO into the Sat emulator and your good to go. Google is your friend on that call since the one I use has potentially illegal ROM files in it. Hit Mininova, Pirate Bay and a host of others, bound to run into it somewhere.

Read about this on Secrets Of Sonic Team website. This looked a very interesting game from the videos I've seen. Too bad the engine was stolen really, as it could have got released if not for that.

I think one of the main reasons that this wasn't released was because Yuji Naka didn't like it - and not because it was a bad game: supposedly he is (or was) very protective of his franchise and didn't like the fact that Americans were making a game based on his character. I believe this is one of the reasons that Sega Japan pulled the plug on it. It's a shame really, a couple of people on the development team supposedly created a really easy to use but incredibly good level editor for it on the PC (if it was anywhere near Trackmania's easy but brilliant editor then it would've been amazing!) - but the project was still canceled. If only one of the developers still had the level editor, they could release it to the public for free then. And 32X, I'm just curious if your one is the same as mine - it's in Jade Gully, a grassy area with a river and some mounds in the ground, you can collect rings, there's a weird transparent diamond on the map and the music playing is from Knuckles Chaotix I think (I'm sure it was either from Chaotix or the canceled Crackers).

I have the music used in it, it's none of them a short selection as only a few levels got made but i might upload it here if people want it.

Ah yes I've heard those tracks, there's a really good Sonic X-treme site somewhere but I cannot remember it. I'm sure you could find it easily from a google search though. It had loads of videos, music, story ideas, concept art and videos.

I've heard of Sonic X-treme a few times, and I'd to read more about it on Secrets of Sonic Team site, so can someone give me the link to the site please, and I can't find it on Google.

People talk about it like it was going to be fantastic, but come on, it was gonna be arse, clearly. It looked like a mix of the Sonic level on Christmas NiGHTS, which was terrible, and the platform game Bug, which is hardly a classic.

Here (http://sost.emulationzone.org/sonic_xtreme/index.htm) is the link you were looking for. This (http://www.senntient.com/projects/xtreme/sxc/index.html) is also an interesting site with Sonic X-treme media. There is also a Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_X-treme) on this too.

Well I think you may be missing the point of why people are interested in Sonic X-Treme. Sure there may a few 10 year olds (no offense to the intellectual 10 year olds out there) out there that think the game was going to be better than Sonic Adventure. Leave them to think their silly thoughts.

Sonic X-Treme's value is that of a game that would have been the first fully 3D Sonic game ever and the first original Sonic title for the Sega Saturn. People want to know what they missed out on! Looking through the media that was released, I wouldn't mind have owning the game myself. Sure the camera angles would likely piss me off, but to be honest I would rather seen Sonic X-Treme released instead of Sonic 3-D Blast.

Also to date, we never saw a game with "Tiara Boobowski". I think she was shaping up to be an interesting character in Sonic's life. Just look how she's holding a little Sonic (http://www.senntient.com/ubb/Forum13/HTML/000003.html)... We may have ended up with a dominating love interest for Sonic. "Sally Arcon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sally_Acorn)" never got to that level. So this in itself could have changed the direction of future Sonic games just like Madonna (http://www.radiosega.net/forum/showthread.php?t=768) could have...

I agree, Sonic X-Treme was a game I wanted for Saturn, and was disappointed when it got cancelled, though back then I didn't understand the reasons why.

Looking at it now, I'm not sure whether or not it would've been a good game, but it's still something I wouldn't mind playing if I could ever find a decent Saturn emulator (read: one that'll play Burning Rangers and NiGHTS), and a beta ISO or something.

If this game was released, Sonic would probably not be the same as we know him today. he could have been to his roots to this day, we could have had no shadow, we could have had Sonic STILL On a SEGA System. You never know.

Hmm.. Sonic X-treme a very interesting game that was,Man i could bore you lot all day about the history of this game. Theres soo much information of this game. Yet no one has tried to remake it, the full set of Jade gully sprites, layouts and stuff have been released.

Also Hi.

Sorry for the wait. Yes it is. It is supposed (keyword there) to be the official leaked code. Like Sonic Crackers I doubt the authenticity of this since I never heard anything from SEGA on it. Nice tech demo for Saturn, if it is real then it would have made a hell of a game. But then on the other hand, it could have been put together by hackers using the Sonic 3D sprites. Personal call on this title though unless you know the actual facts. All I remember about it was a 3D Sonic running around a 3D rendered head of Yuji Naka (I think it was him, memory is a little bit fuzzy).

At least we could make a online petition for this game to be true and PC-exclusive (since the Saturn has vanished), but that would be a vague idea though. >_>

Won't happen as the game wasn't finished. They'd have to finish it and go through all that crap about SEGA of America stealing the NiGHTS engine again.

I wasn't refering to SEGA, my friend. XD
I was talking about us, the people, to make the game, since Sonic Team doesn't give a damn about their mascot. (But they wouldn't do a great job on the Wii/PS2 versions of Unleashed, if it wasn't for Dimps. ^_^)

This game would be awesome, but too bad it was never released. I went through the trouble of burning the iso rip and modding my Saturn to play this and it looks good and plays well with the saturn controls, no matter how brief the demo actually is.

Retro gamer magazine had quite an interesting article about this. It just never overly impressed me looking at it. I on't think the developers really liked where they were going with it either.

Look I have seen many pics and many videos for Sonic Xtreme and I have the feeling that something was missing from the game but that something could be found at the completetion of the game from the developers. Sonic Xtreme had a true SEGA game atmosphere, mystical, strange, innovate it looked "lost" if you catch my meaning which why SEGA was always different from any other game developers. It was "Xtremely" bad that they didn't release it! At that time graphically and overall looked quite a decent hit! What can I say, choices, some good some bad...

I hope that one day the PC version gets released, since that's the version that the developers made it the furthest on before the whole project was officially canned. I think the fisheye lens used in that built far eclipses the boring neutral BUG-ish camera from the other versions. Sonic was all about speed, and that camera truly captured it, while at the same time offering an increased field of view so you could rip through levels without fear of enemies just popping up. There are some stunning bits from all the levels on display on YouTube - this should never have been canned!

Even if the game would have been a turd (which it wasn't), Sega pulling the plug on this basically killed the Saturn, because the game had received so much press for so long, and when it became vaporware, then it just illustrated the disarray present within Sega. There's no better way to destroy consumer confidence than to fail to complete your most famous game!
