Can I ask everyone a simple question? Why is Sonic R not on the soundtrack downloads? I like all the songs in the game. They are really cool.

Simple case that uploading the tracks takes ages, the graphics have to be made.
But fear not - 15~20 new soundtracks will begin to be uploaded from tomorrow!
Just go to http://sonicstyle.org
There you will find some Music from Sonic R.

Sonic R, The Best Sonic Game on the Saturn, and the Best Sonic Racing Game To this Day.I say Sonic R is one of the best titles you'll find on The Saturn. With its Fun Tracks, Loads of Unlockables, a wide variety of Sonic Characters, and an awesome Soundtrack, this Game is definatly worth playing. And if you've never owned or don't own a Saturn, you can buy it for the PC or play it on the Sonic Gems Collection Gamecube Game.
You can visit the myspace i made for this Game and listen to Some of its Tracks here!

I never liked this game a lot.
It had great graphics,
and cool music.
But I was totally crap at it.
Usually I like racing games.
but I could not get used to the controls!
Sonic R, The Best Sonic Game on the Saturn
Considering the only other Sonic game on the Saturn was Sonic Jam, which was a compilation of the Mega Drive games, Sonic R hasn't really got much competition, has it?

Well there was Sonic 3D which people prefer over the Mega Drive version.

Games controls are a bit Hard, But thats something you have to get skilled at.
I really liked Sonic R. I just wouldn't call it "a Sonic game", though. Very nice, tho and really nice graphics on the saturn.

Ah yeah, I forgot about that one. XD
I prefer the Mega Drive one, myself. Better music, for one, and the special stage was easier. :P

Let's not go nuts Dan, but it is one of the most fun racing games I've played!
First Sonic game that was not made by Sonic Team if remeber correctly. I really liked this game when it was released. Going back to it now, i must admit that it's not quite as hot. But still an enjoyable racer, although a bit on the easy side. The music as has been pointed out is really enjoyable. Makes you smile:biggrin:

I need to say I am agree with you.
Maybe you know that Riders, for example, doesnīt have the same design and shortcuts, the shorcuts here are very special and the circuits are long.
The Music is excellent, the gameplay seems simple but is very entertaining, and with many characters to unlock. It isnīt always necessary to generate graphics hallucinating to make a great game.
I do hope you're not referring to Sonic R when you said that there's loads of characters to unlock. I can only recall having 5 to unlock, 6 if we include Super Sonic. That's not really a lot, especially as some of them are basic reskins of characters you already have.

Speaking of which has anyone all that Tails Doll crap thats been going around the net about a curse? It's a load of cobber but a real laugh if you happen find it, although it was 2 years ago since I stumblled upon it now. I still think this game could have used a bit more......zing! Call it whatever comes to you but it could have had just a little bit more excitement like a random cutscene or 2.
It was very quick to complete. So long as you knew what you were doing, you could technically finish it in one playthrough.
I personally had a lot of trouble beating Metal Sonic. The others were pretty easy to beat (Especially "Mecha Tails"), but I had to unlock Super Sonic to compare with Metal Sonic.

Metal Sonic is the hardest of the secret characters to unlock. From my experience Tails is the best character to unlock him. I always had a hard time unlocking Metal Sonic using Super Sonic.

Metal Sonic is the only good character out of the secret one in my opinion. I mean, the Egg Robo can't race look at it!. Metal Knuckles looks half-decent I suppose but don't like him still. Oh and Gavvie it's Tails Doll not Mecha Tails.

To me is more difficult beat Metal Knuckles than Metal Sonic, He is very fast and He constantly take the shorcuts.
Metal Sonic was the first character I unlocked, and I got him the first time.
The most challenging is the need to achieve the 5 medals without dropping out of the race. Hmm... Well, the first time I played it was quite difficult, not now.

Aww man getting those bloody medals and comming in the top 3 was a nightmare for me. Especially on Reactive Factory as you needed to go way off track for some and by that time everyone had passed you. My tip was get them all in the first lap so that you have the last 2 laps to get into the top 3 and win. Oh and metal Knuckles was easy for me as he fell off the stage somewhere around the tracks only loop. I saw his dot on the map and it just stopped.

Haha, I agree with you.
Is the challenge of the game, doesnīt it?
Well, Thatīs my strategy, get all the medals in the first and second lap and then, in the third lap, run to the finish.
About that, the same happened to me the last time I played the game the last month, Metal Knuckles stopped and nothing, I won the race without problem.
Mm, I always thought it was Metal Sonic that took all the shortcuts, and was pretty much perfect in his cornering.
Shame he didn't play that well when you actually unlocked him...

It's a shame he couldn't just drop out of the race aswell heh. The chaos emeralds were easier to get than those medals which doesn't make sence as Super Sonic is always suppossed to be the hardest to unlock.
Some of the Emeralds were also out of the way if you remember though. I found a couple of them hard to get hold of, mainly because I tried to get all of them in one race, so going after three Emeralds and then trying to win wasn't exactly the wisest of things to be doing :p

I never had a problem getting them. Although, I never got all of them at once as you had to come in first place to keep it.
Must've just been me setting my goals too high then XD
But yeah, going back to Tails Doll/Mecha Tails, what was the point of putting him in? His only plus was that he could float on water without any real lack of speed, but his top speed was crap. Had SEGA gone crazy when they concieved him?

Good point. He never made any kind of return either. There was not much point in creating him apart from someone to counter Tails, at least Metal Knuckles came back in Sonic Advance.
And was in Sonic the Comic (UK edition), so he could've been a nod to that, especially as the two designs were very similar.
That said, Tails Doll did kind of make a comeback in Sonic Adventure, as one of Gamma's targets that he had to shoot.

So you are right, not a big come back but I supposse it counts. As far as Sonic R goes though they could have made a Metal Tails to go with the rest of the unlockable characters.
There was a Metal Tails in StC as well, they could've borrowed the design for that. Though, I don't think SEGA would've wanted to hunt back to Issue 6, or whichever one it was in.
Can't find a picture of it though, and I can't be arsed to hunt my copy down to scan it.

Well, the games and comics were always seperate so barely anything was used in both was it? Same goes for the TV series apart from Sonic X.
Mm, yeah that's true. They only ever seemed to cross over when the comics wanted to do a story run on one of the games, albeit with some liberties, such as the Floating Island having gun turrets.

Yeah, what was up with that? XD. They never even tried to include Sally or Bunnie into the games did they? maybe it was for the best though who knows...
I dunno, but it was even quirkier giving the Death Egg Death Star like lasers. I think Fleetway thought it would've been a good idea, and at the time it was, but when you look back on it, it was a bit idiotic.
The whole time travel story with Metal Sonic (Sonic CD) didn't make sense either. Apparently the artist of that story didn't get it either XD
Anyway, I made a StC related topic here (http://www.radiosega.net/forum/showthread.php?t=837), so we should probably continue this conversation there.

Possibly my favourite Sonic soundtrack.
I thought the soundtrack reeked of cheese, actually. Wasn't so bad as instrumental tracks go, but the vocals kinda cheapened it a lot.

I thought Sonic R was a good, if yet short game, it was very unique racer and had some brilliant graphics and nice touches to do.
Oh and I like 'Work It Out' a lot! As my request shows, mwahahahaha!
It's probably the best Sonic racing game, which isn't saying a lot when you look at the other offerings (two Riders and two Drifts, although the two Rivals games are very good).

It's a good game to play in multiplayer, but since it's such a short game the singleplayer mode can be a little scarce. Still... it's a good racing game and as some have said, an awesome soundtrack.
Took me a while to complete when I was a little Gavvie. Probably because I was rubbish at games like that. I struggled to beat Metal Sonic and Metal Knuckles..at least until I unlocked Super Sonic. Then I showed them :P

Yeah you are right beating the game 100% is the way to go but it's a pain in the @$$ believe me. I still remember late 1998 my Sega Saturn memory went blank, it erased all my data. Damn!! Then later I got myself a memory card it was a little to late. If I did once I can do it again.

Heh yeah, trying to collect every emblem is hard, and more because you need to be observant of your rank, and not finish less than the 3rd place. Later you have to beat the secret character, although they arenīt too hard (I think), Metal Knuckles is the only that gives me a lot of trouble.

I think it's because Sonic R is definitely not the best Sonic game.
First of all you have the general "Everything above Sonic [2/3/CD] is crap"-people, y'know.
I mean, you have to be honest: It's not a really good game. It's okay, but it could use major improvements.
To some people the music is just too horrible (which I can understand, not everyone likes these trance-ish happy happy joy joy songs), and some don't get along with the gameplay (which I understand too, because it's not well done).
Sonic R is certainly not the worst Sonic game, but it's definitely not the best.

Nope, why I moved it all.

I ripped my Sonic R soundtack straight from the PC version and really couldn't be happier; I you haven't got a huge smile on your face while listning to Can You Feel The Sunshine? then you're probably dead already. My advice? Get the PC-CDROM for Ģ1 on GrabIt Software and rip to your hearts content using Windows Media Player!
i love this games... gametrailer say that it is one of the worst episodes ... I like so much
and the music... ahh CAN YOU FEEL THE SUNSHINE???
i like more sonic r, gametrailer don't understand nothing...

Just another post echoing the SONIC R love. I pulled an all nighter a few years ago in a bid to finish the game to 100% completion. I almost got carpal tunnel from playing Reactive Factory over and over and over again to get the gem. Man, that one was tough. The game had a great balance of difficulty, since it wasn't too tough to win levels initially, but if you wanted to step it up and collect all the gems, then it varied from challenging to near impossible. The graphics were some of the best on the system (with the amazing transparencies on the final level, reflections, resolution, and even the loading screen!). The control was definitely touchy, but after initial frustrations I ended up quite liking it. It plays so loose, and at the end when you need to be so precise in getting those gems, it can be a beast to master. But you can, so kudos to Traveller's Tales for fine tuning this sucker.
The music, of course, speaks for itself. Some of the best ever. Totally cheesy and over the top, but there's a certain charm in being so carefree about all that light Euro-pop. At a time when most games strive for edge, this one was happily content with just sharing the love.

I may echo it too. I'll use your post as a guide though. X3

I agree. I hate to constantly sound bitter and refer to gaming media sources, but every site or magazine that has a form of a 'retro review,' they always knock on Sonic R's controls and music(my opinion about the music will follow after this rant).
If my little pre-teen hands could hold the Xbox controller with no problem, and I could control Sonic in Sonic R with ease, then obviously I'm..just in the minority? Lol. I loved the controls in Sonic R to be quite honest.
Sonic R is the only 3D Sonic game to capture a sense of speed in my opinion. It actually feels like you have momentum, a feature that all of the 3D games lack. When you attempt to stop in Sonic R, you come to a skidding stop, just like in the 2D games! Plus, since you're going so fast, it just feels natural to hold R for sharper right turns and L for sharper left turns. The sense of speed and momentum is helped with the fun, slightly hard-to-master control scheme, and I loved the game all the more for it.

I completely agree. I actually very much enjoy what many to be considered 'cheesy' music. I once let a friend listen to "Diamond in the Sky," and "You're My Number One," and she ... well, wasn't surprised they were from a Sonic game because she knew I was a Sonic fan, but she said she would've been surprised otherwise, lol.
The kind-hearted lyrics and the soft romantic theme to the songs are invitingly welcome and heart-warming to say the least. I can see how some people don't like the music because we all have different musical tastes, but I definitely don't mind listening to some "Back in Time" after getting in my rock and techno fix. :3
Sonic R's still my favorite Sonic title after all this time, and it will continue to be unless another title manages to recapture that 'awesomeness' factor.

Great point here, and something I never really thought about. The fact that you can lose control so easily if you don't master the controls, I guess, is a testament to the sense of speed the game creates. You wouldn't be able to stop on a dime in real life at those speeds, and SONIC R does a fine job of approximating just how frenzied such speed can be.
I think the reason it got chewed up in reviews when it came to controls was because before this most kart-style racers were of the pick up and play variety. They were "kids games" and thus should be easy for friends to jump into and win a few rounds. SONIC R went the hardcore route, forgoing ease and extra tracks for replay value. In a lot of ways it's like NiGHTS, offering only a handful of levels, but enough challenge and reward for mastering them that the replay value is far higher than all other games of its ilk. NiGHTS too was derided for the control and shortness, although it has a much more positive image than SONIC R does these days.
It's a shame, because it's games like these that defined what was so great about Sega a decade ago - they didn't just follow the paths of the mainstream, they were always carving a new path, regardless of whether gamers joined them or not. They took risks, and even if they didn't pay off back then, I think in the long run it's those risks that will help define their legacy.

That's actually one thing I think is kind of lame - why couldn't they have had better secret character other than a bunch of mech swaps for all the main characters. Other than malfunctioning in water (who wants that?) they basically play the same as their animal counterparts. I realize the Sonic universe was still pretty small at this point, but they could have included some different animals (like the ones you save throughout the games) or at least made the robots handle much different.

Wow, just wow
I tought this would be interesting to bring here
I've heard from other guy some critics to the music in sonic R
(btw I disagree with him I believe the music in sonic R is awesome)
Speaking of Sonic and how he sucks, I've been listening to the Brawl soundtrack, and as of this posting, I'm on the Sonic Music block. I gotta say, Sonic has some of the WORST music in the history of EVER. The lyrics for "Super Sonic Racing" in particular are probably some of the worst lyrics ever written. "Keep your feet on the ground! We're gonna move around!" Jesus Christ! why would anyone record that!?
what do you think about this?,

Sonic games always had some of the best music ever released on videogames. As for Sonic R, the lyrics were lighthearted (for the lack of a better term) and they fitted the tracks well.
Correct me if im wrong, but wasn't there an option to disable lyrics in the menu??

Itīs impressive, that "unplugged", to put a name, was fantastic. Her voice is still intact.

I donīt know if with Sonic could work nowadays, his kind of music has changed since the Dreamcast era. Altough, with any other SEGA game could be. It says she worked in Metropolis Street Racer.
I really wish there were a S.o.S. in America.
It doesnīt matter wherever it is, I donīt think I could go anyway.

TJ Davis did the vocals on quite a few tracks on MSR. It's part of the reason why MSR is one of my favourite gaming soundtracks. Her vocals are excellent, Richard Jacques' music production is brilliant and there is such a fantastic mix of different stuff. Definately work a few requests on RadioSEGA!

Definitly one of my favourite sonic games. It's soundtrack is very unique with Davis and Jacquas, fun character to play as, the backround of Regal Ruins is fantastic, especially at sunset or night, and it gave birth to the false rumor of the tails doll curse where if you beat the game as tails doll, or tag super sonic as tails doll, tails doll will torment you. It doesnt work, I tried.

Can I ask everyone a simple question? Why is Sonic R not on the soundtrack downloads? I like all the songs in the game. They are really cool.
Dunno if this has already been suggested - too lazy to read the whole thread, sorry XD - but the whole Sonic R soundtrack is available on sonicretro, I DL'd it myself. Sonicretro also has the BGM from pretty much every other Sonic game too.
