Maybe about a week ago a new commercial Dreamcast shmup was announced. Here are some screens and tidbits.

These screens showing an early development status of roughly 65%.

As shown DUX will completely consist out of CGI to use the advantages of Dreamcasts 2D capabilities. So the game features high-resolution to allow some super smooth graphics in 60fps. Also notices, the game is still in development but the screens present the games overal look pretty well. The final results will look much better.

As the screens also hopefully show, this is going to be memorizing shooting. So it will be necessarily to memorize some parts of the game here and there, but there's still a focus on action. When you never have heard about memorizing in shooters then you probably never heard of R-Type. Yet DUX won't be just a clone of mentioned classic, but rather a modern and standalone game inspiried by the games within the same subgenre. By saying modern I mean this memorizer will take the advantages of recent shooting games to combine it with an undying gaming concept. Accessibility, highly-visible bullets and a lot of those simultanesly on screen, are one of the advantages - just to name a few of them.

Why is it that everybody's making Shmups for the DC nowadays? Aren't people able to make platformers or anything anymore? :(

It seems every DC release after it's death must be a Shmup, probably because they're awesome.

Haven't you heard? DC is the official shmups console! :P Seriously though, I agree with Gavvie. How about a good platformer for a change?

Seems like the DC have become the new C64/A500. The console simply won't die! And in my opinion that is great news! If this continous we can expect great games for the DC in the future. That is if you like shoot em up's;)

Though I'd love a classic platform game, there's not nearly as big of a fanbase around those. The DC never was THE console for platform games. There's also way easier to create an impressive looking shmup than a great platform game.

I heard that Melty Blood: Act Cadenza was coming to Dreamcast but was canned and only came out for the PS2 and PC. Quite sad since the arcade version ran on the NAOMI arcade board.

Still aint no problems with shmup's, they are awesome fun to play but its true I would not mind something new.

That is sad it was canned, but what was really sad was that none of the Atomiswave games were released, when it was basically a Dreamcast Arcade system with a couple of good games that weren't shooters.

I'll probably order mine tomorrow then. Apparently this could be the greatest game ever made. Even better than Last Hope: Pink Bullets. I can't miss out on that.

Pardon to ask.
What is a shmup?
A shmup is a shooter game where you usually fly a spaceship, either in 3rd person view or sidescrolling, while shooting at pretty much everything while dodging enemy bullets. "SHMUP" is actually short for "shoot 'em up" but doesn't include first person shooters or Run 'n Gun type of games. Famous shmup games are Gradius, R-Type, and Ikaruga.
