View Full Version : The Forgotten Games

I was going through old magazines today, the likes of Gamesmaster (when it was cool) and flicking through the pages I saw games I had completely forgotten about, so I was thinking that if anyone knows a "forgotten" game it should be mentioned here to remind ourselves of great memories. I don't mean just any old games ones that are not as well known as others but still great fun, (So no Sonics please;)).
My first two I can think of now are:
Chuck Rock
World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck
Games that I have forgotten must be Pitfall on my Atari2600 and Renegade on the C64. Great games in it's day!

You're showing your age a bit;)! I only played pitfall on the Mega CD

I know someone who is 15 and loves his Atari.
Anywho... Forgotten games, huh?
Super Dodgeball for the NeoGeo. That was lovely. Challenging to hard but lovely.

Hahahaha Super Dodgeball! Brings back some memories, although I only played the arcade version, a bit different. I just rmemebered one more - Decap Attack!
Waku Waku 7 on the Neo Geo that was a class fighting game.

Some games that I don't hear of these days include:
The Incredible Crash Dummies (Master System / Mega Drive)
Dizzy (C64, Mega Drive, Others...)The Incredible Crash Dummies I'm really referring to is the Master System version where there are 5 "days" of activities. You (as the namesake) are the character that crash tests the stunts. These being:
Jumping off a Skyscraper / Block of Flats;
Car Driving - Collecting Air Cans;
Mountain Skiing;
Diffusing Bombs at a Bomb Factory; and
Flying a Space Rocket. Then there's the Dizzy franchise. Commodore 64 games see Dizzy in a whole host of games, including:
Dizzy Down the Rapids
Panic Dizzy
Kwik Snax
Prince of Yolk Folk
Spellbound Dizzy...and others that I can't think off right now.
EDIT: You can find out more about the Dizzy series, from Wikipedia:

That was a fun game. Never completed it though. Anyway ... about forgotten games ... Grim Fandango. I tried to get it when it was released (98?), couldn't get it and completely forgot about it until I finally found it last year.

Yea that's exactly the same as on Gameboy, fun game.
Anyway a forgotten game...hmm probably Terranigma and action RPG from Quintet and Enix.

That was a fun game. Never completed it though.
I have, and I strive to get double pay where possible.
Once completed the five days, you play the same five days again, about 3-4 times, each time getting progressivly harder.
Once completed, you see a picture of your Crash Dummy on a tropical beach with a message saying something like, "You're too good to be a crash dummy", or words to that effect. I'll have to play the game again to get the real message.

The farthest I ever got was at the last level of the third run. And that was a lucky break.

Phelios and Generations Lost for the Genisis,
Inndependence Day for Saturn (with the flight stick).
Inndependence Day for Saturn (with the flight stick).
The reason that game was forgotten was because it was s**t.

World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck
Wow! The memories of me (as Donald) and my friend (as Mickey) playing this game over and over and over again! I must say that this was actually a pretty good game with cool levels and bosses. Not really a Sonic, but pretty good for a Disney game. p_nut_uk is oficially my hero from now on for reminding me of this game! :P
Games that I have forgotten must be Pitfall on my Atari2600 and Renegade on the C64. Great games in it's day!
Pitfall on the Mega Drive/Genesis is also a nice memory! I miss the classics!
Edit: After seeing it mentioned here (http://www.radiosega.net/forum/showthread.php?p=16109#post16109), I remembered Quackshot starring Donald Duck. I first played it on my Mega Drive and got through it all on the same day because I borrowed it from a friend and that was all the time I had. A few years back I tried the rom on my Gens emulator, but it got a bit boring. The game isn't all that, but it's pretty nice, nonetheless. And as a bonus you get to play as Donald and shoot plungers! XD
Anyway a forgotten game...hmm probably Terranigma and action RPG from Quintet and Enix.
Does this really count as a forgotten game? I had no idea since it usually goes for a pretty high price in online auctions. I think of it as one of the best snes game ever made (definently top 10).
2 games that feels pretty much forgotten on the MD is Ranger X and Chiki chiki Boys. Both are awesome action games, but I barely know anyone who's played any of them. Check them out.
Another great game would be Turtles: The Hyperston heist on the MD. Everyone loves Turtles in Time for the snes, but I think Hyperstone Heist is way superior with it's tighter controls and faster action.

Glad I could help, it's exactly the emtion I had when i remembered it, it's a shame more co-op orientated games aren't made, I think it was a fantastic game and can't believe I forgot about it.
It even had seperate single player levels, looking back it had a lot of levels and a lot of thought.

Joe and Mac for the Super NES. it is very good, I still play it to this day. It a very Good two player Platformer with plenty of CaveMan Fun. the reason its forgotten is because the Company that made it, Data East, went bankrupt.

Ah, the classic arcade TMNT games were all fun games to play.
Also, the strangest game you never played: The Lawnmower Man. Lol, has anyone ever played this title because I was curious out of the title. I found out it's based off a movie. It has a variety of gameplay elements and seems interesting...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9GES_qOTM4
It was released for the Sega Genesis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Genesis)/Megadrive, Super NES (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_NES), PC, Mega CD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mega_CD).
Okay no jokes about my age please:
Jet Set Willy

Classic platform games, hard as nails and great fun. I can spend hours on this one game.
Toyota Celica GT Rally

Really good rally game, more so than some, including Colin McRae. This can have you trying to beat times for days on end. ^_^
Elite

Even the the speccy this is a class A title.
Think it's time I got TCGTR running again! Try and beat some races in it. ^_^
NOTE: These screenshots are for the ZX Spectrum released games. They came on tape, took 10 minutes or more to load and that's without some machines needing a specific volume on the tape player. ^_^

Toyota Celica GT Rally reminds me of the first Test Drive games.
I would say so since I've never actually met anyone who's played it.

Anywho, forgotten games:
Castle of Illusion (Either Master System or Mega Drive, they both rocked)
Beyond Good & Evil
Transbot
Ghosthunter
Primal
Battle Arena Toshinden
Croc (:D)
Me :D
You didn't even get past the towers that's not playing the game, it's like giving up during a tutorial.

Croc, a timeless classic :P
Beyond Good & Evil isn't a forgotten game! Many people played, I believe and it's not that old.
Another forgotten game: Bug!

Pokemon Pinball - I used to play this loads along with the other GBC Pokemon games. It was the first game I had for the GBC and I just forgot about it after time.
Bomberman (PS1) - Such a good multiplayer. Only PS1 game I have which allows 5 players and it was always a favourite when mates were around. I should really play it again as it's quite fun even on your own in battle mode.
Bomberman Fantasy Race (PS1) - Wierd style of racing game where you use animals instead of karts but it was an ok game that I played a lot just to unlock everything :P.
There's probably others I will think of soon.
Beyond Good & Evil isn't a forgotten game! Many people played, I believe and it's not that old.
Actually, they didn't. The game hardly sold, despite being critically acclaimed, and Ubisoft confirmed that the lack of sales is the reason why its cliffhanger will never be resolved.
Shame really. It was an awesome game, and I really wanted to know where the story was going :(

Oh yes, the Simpsons arcade game! I spent loads on that thing. I managed to complete it on MAME though after I found out about the emulator some time ago. I enjoyed that game, should play it again as I think I still have it saved.

My most played arcade game is Daytona but I see where your comming from as it was quite addictive.
Good ol' MAME. I like HK MAME as well, or whatever it was called. Allowed you to play MAME games multiplayer.
Me and Reknoc beat Simpsons and Turtles using it, I believe. Two games I never managed to finish on my own.
Pac-Land was good as well. You know, the platforming one.

Oh sorry it isn't out for Dreamcast (don't know where I got that from I'm sure) guess I thought since Daytona was it was to. I also used to use those 2P machines quite a lot for reasons even I don't know why, boredom I guess. I always wanted to play Le Mans on the Dreamcast for that reason! But I never saw it in any shops. I've even looked at doing real endurance racing, but the cost of doing the Silverstone 24hr entry alone is about Ģ4000.

I've played the 32X version. The graphix were amazing, compared to the MD version. Levels and gameplay seemed identical though. But I should inform that I never got very far, so there might've been some changes.

Oh yeah! Isn't that the same game as Bust-a-Move? I'm not sure.
Also I got two more, well one isn't really forgotten but it's more underrated in my opinion.
Lion King! I thought it was a brilliant game, and one of the best platformers in it's time.
Secondly Zombies Ate My Neighbours! I always remeber renting the game out, I never owned it, but I always had fun, but found It quite a tough game.

When it was ported to consoles it was called Bust-A-Move for some odd reason. I prefer the name Puzzle Bobble as Bust-A-Move sounds like a dance title.

BALLZ! Oh man that was such a great fighting game! Well i remember it was, I can't believe I nearly forgot! My favourite character was Kronk, I love jumping on the enemies and smacking them on the head with my club!

I played that one. Like Quackshot, I borrowed it from a friend and got to the final boss really fast. But I never got to finish it. I simply wasn't able to throw Scar over the cliff and my friend asked me to return. Still, it was a solid platformer.

Omega Boost for the PS1 is a great game long forgotten. I don't think they ever made a sequel. Also the guys who did Gran Turismo made this game.

Everyone and their dog remembers Killer Instinct with its million hit c-c-c-combos, well everyone except Nintendo.
I'm gonna throw down Thief: The Dark Project (and The Metal Age) as a forgotten game, pretty much the game that introduced light and sound based stealth, featured a fantastic world and probably one of the coolest characters ever. Third one wasn't so bad, definitly had one of the scariest levels in a game ever, which is why I stopped playing it. ):

The Jungle Book ... Enjoyed it thought I never got too far. It's what happens when the game doesn't belong to you. Way cooler than the Snes Aladdin, since he has a sword in the MD game.

I don't think it was forgotten or over-looked. In fact, Alladin has to be one of Disney's better-known 16-bit games. Just look at all the youtube references to the game.

Two more forgotten games: Mr. Bones and Shinobi X both for the Sega Saturn. Mr. Bones was a fine game which offered a great deal of variety on its levels (from platforming to playing instruments). Shinobi X was ... well ... Shinobi for the Saturn. A great game with simple mechanics and good level structure.

I love you Tails_1986! I had completely forgotten! And hey that's a future request I think;), it had some cool music, where's the request thread? Hehehe!
I must admit, I'd never really heard of Mr. Bones. The name does sound familiar, but I can't remember why.
Aladdin was a good game. It's funny that, in a time where we dread all future film based games, we forget the games from back in the early 90s where, albeit slightly generic, they were enjoyable.
Jurassic Park, anyone?

I remember Jurassic Park for Megadrive and I didn't like it at all.
Another game in my "Hall of shame" is The Last Battle. I got this game in exchange for "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story". It was probably worst exchange I've ever made. Dragon was great.

I used to use ROMNation.net. Until I decided to get the lot (5112 or something close) in one download. If you need one just PM me and I'll see about getting it or them to you. ROMNation went down after time and I don't use it for anything much anymore.
Most people will want to forget this but I always remembered Bubsy 3D for the playstation, one of my very first 3D games. ^_^
Went through some old games and found Little Big Adventure (aka Relentless) for the PSX. This game was one of my favs back in the early PSX days. Didn't like the sequel as much though.
Well, the Jurassic Park I was talking about was the Master System version :P I didn't own a Mega Drive so I can't really remember many games from it, except perhaps Cyborg Justice and Talmit's Adventure (Marvel Land in other territories).

Hehehehe Cyborg Justice! Very unique fighter, was there anything more satisfying than sawing someones arm off? I love it, rock hard though.

Mm, I don't think I've ever managed to complete it. Me and my cousin used to play it all the time trying to get to the end, and we never could.
Now I try playing the ROM of it and I can't get anywhere, I'm totally useless :(

Buy a USB gamepad that closely resembles the MD remote, have Gens set all the keys on it right, then your all set. Keyboards are gits for playing old games (and newer one's).

I slightly remember Wiz 'n' Liz, where the husband and wife would catch the rabbits for their dinner, whilst I feel that Zoom was somewhat forgotten- despite me being obsessed with that Ice Skating cushion man. Also, I'd probably never forget the Mickey and Donald game- that last boss always freaked me out when I was younger. Is Michael Jackson's Moonwalker a forgotten game, or a game we'd rather forget?

I'm afraid the soundtrack to Moonwalker is on here so it's not forgotten, I thought the game was good though, now Wiz 'n' Liz is forgotten although I never thought much of it.

Neither. It's a great game, which reminds that there were a time when MJ was known for other stuff than pedophilia. Moonwalker is a classic. A sequel would be horrible though.

How about Beyond Oasis?
Now THAT'S a forgotten game series that had some potential. I own the Sequel Legend of Oasis (or Story of Thor 2 as it's called here) for the Saturn, and it's magic system is really well made with the way you summon the elemental spirits. The fighting system was pretty interesting too. Defenently deserved more credits than it got back in the days.
Dark Saviour for the Saturn was also a great game that noone seemed to care about. I really liked it's interesting parallel system. Some platforming moments were insanly hard though.

Interestiing, never knew that. The original PS1 version I did play a lot though. My most hated level was "Eat At Joes". That last section where you had to jump onto the floats was a real pain because of the fish that kept jumping up at you. It took me a while to get passed it. Candy Chateau was a breeze in comparison.

MSR can be classed as one since not only do very few people remember it but people don't even know it's the first in the line of PGR games. Of which are completely crap compared to the beauty that is MSR.
I wouldn't say that MSR is part of the PGR series. Rather, I'd say that PGR is the "spiritual successor" of MSR, which may or may not have become a franchise for SEGA.

They took the guts out of MSR then added a load of crap to it. It may "seem" like a different game but it's still built on MSR. Missing CD player, missing custom messages, missing a lot including the great music. :(

Yea Kid Ying and Dr. Yang totally stupid. Only reason I used to play the original is so I could get to the second level and play Gradius.

Here's another Konami classic- Blades of Steel for the NES.
Now for a Konami hat trick.
Anyone remember Metal Warriors on the SNES? Developed by Lucas-arts and published by Konami. Fun platforming mech game similar to Cybernator and it has the most awesome multiplayer that I like to play online with friends on my Emulator.
Saint Sword from taito, was a beat em up for the genesis, so cool, you transform in 3 diferent mithycal characters, jaja so many memories that i am going to search for it to play again!

I don't think this counts as a forgotten game. Thanx to AVGN's review of the sega CD, pretty much everyone know of this one.

Maybe, Just might be who I know. I don't know anyone that owns a copy and the only people I know of that have heard of it are online. As i've mentioned before this is A tough thread as your not sure what each person knows and doesn't know.

Kula world is one of those games I only played the demo. In Spyro case, the first one may also be forgotten because it came roughly at the same time as Crash Bandicoot and I believe Crash was better accepted (and the quality of its titles apparently took a dive).

I too only played the demo of Kula World.
I love Spyro a lot but love Crash Bandicoot just a little bit more.

Am I the only one who thought Crash Bandicoot was rubbish? Sony's wonderful mascot! The next Mario! Bah pathetic! Now a beach ball would have been and was a better mascot. Rant over:)

No doubt, the only real challenger to Mario 64.
As for other games what about Extreme G racing? I thought it was quite good and I forgotten about it until just now.

That never came out in Europe, was it any good?
Croc was awesome. Shame he's under EA's ownership, else I'd be campaigning for a new game by now.
Still, least EA tried their hand at platforming. Anybody remember Ty the Tasmanian Tiger?

I've played the full version, but never completed...(I am regretful...)

I only played the following games, but I wished I could play it. (By the way, CRAAAASSSSHHH BANDICOOOOT!!! Come back to your only home, please!!! Only PlayStation could carry you to the starlight!!XD)
Lol, I liked the Crash games on PSone. Think it's a shame that, in recent years, they've decided to take him in so many different directions. It's almost as if they feel straight up platformers don't work anymore, even though Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter proved they do.

Although, after Daxter on the PSP, we've never heard of that franchise again, at least "platformingly" speaking.

I remember the first game I ever bought with my own money was an adventure game called Golden Axe Warrior for the master system. It was a decent Zelda clone by Sega that seems to have been forgotten with the passing of time.

I tried Ty out but I couldn't get into it. The controls didn't feel right for me.

Umm... Neither of those, apart from the first Jak, are straight up platformers. They're shooters with platforming elements.
Well, they're more platformy than Crash and Spyro have become in recent years, that's the point I was trying to make :p

Lakers vs. Celtics and The NBA Playoffs for the Sega Genesis. In my opinion the best basketball video game. What so great about this game is it's great gameplay and it's rockin' soundtrack. While the others sequels came out like Bulls vs. Lakers, Bulls vs. Blazers, Showdown 94' and the Live series...still those games were missing something. The gameplay music. And yeah the game only has 8 teams and 2 all-star teams but that doesn't matter. If you are playing this game pick the Phoneix Suns because Tom Chambers is Unstoppable!!
also it's time to play this game cause of the NBA Finals

I haven't played it but there's probably a good reason it's forgotten.
Here's something pretty recent, Another Code (Trace Memory) on the DS pretty much ignored thanks to most DS games at the time being pretty terrible. It was a pretty average adventure game that tried to use as much of the DS's functions as possible.

The Snail Maze is, in a sense, an Easter Egg in the SEGA Master System I. As far as I am aware, the game was never advertised and so you needed to know how to activate it.
If you still have a Master System I or fancy trying it on your favourite emulator, power up console / emulator without a cartridge / ROM image inserted. As the SEGA logo appears, press and hold buttons: Up, 1 and 2 simultaneously. Once the sound has stopped, the BIOS logo should slide to the left bringing with it the Snail Maze. Good Luck!
More information can be found here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snail_Maze

Cool, a game built into the BIOS. Never heard of that before. I only have a Master System II though so I would need an emulator to try this out.

Now you are talking. Destruction Derby is a great series. I had 1, 2 and Raw for the PS1 and played them loads. I know there is also 1 for the PS2 but Ive never played it.
DD2=best. Raw was good too. They also made one for N64...it was great from what I remember. I liked how Mike Skinner's #31 Nascar was added into the game as an extra...(I wish I still had an emulator so I could screenshot it for you)

It had more cars, brighter and better graphics, and flying debris when the cars crashed (even full hoods and trunk covers would fly off) If you love DD, I suggest you play it...I'm sure you can find it for cheap now.

Mind the double post, but here is the 31 from DD64, and the real 31 (as of 1999 anyway). I found this easter egg interesting since DD64 is not a Nascar related game...

I've only played the first 3, shame because I really want to play Strangers Wrath, Odessey is pretty much the same as Exodus and Munch's tries to take it 3D.
I hope the newest one is gonna be a first person since I think that really helps immerse you into the game world, which is something I'd like to happen on Oddworld.
