Since I saw ScrewAttack's top of best and worst Sonic games and my doubt of the upcoming Sonic Unleashed, I wanted to ask you all what is your WORST Sonic game of all time.
For me, Sonic 3D: Flickies Island and Shadow The Hedgehog are the worst games I've ever played.

Since I've never played Shadow or 2006 (though I am watching a Let's Play of it and it really does look shit), my vote has to go to Sonic Heroes thanks to it's bugs boring gameplay mechanic and crap camera.

I would say probably Sonic Heroes for the frustration of trying to play the game without glitches. Shadow is a distant second just for that, although it was also very glitchy.

I have the game, but my opinion was split in half: it's just normal. And Shadow... just hate it, Hate it, HATE IT!!! (Because of the very same glitches and the levels were too hard to complete when you're with zero patience.)

Both games had some good ideas, in my opinion. I'm not the type of person that hates the games because I can see some qualities in both of them. But I found myself completing Shadow much easily than Heroes, because of said glitches.

Perhaps he's actually a shunned employee, the dark side of Sonic Team, always trying to influence the other members to get darker and more violent, he then pulled out shadow the hedgehog, and got fired

Shadow the Hedgehog. Too repetitive, gun system was very loose and not well thought out, and just all around not very good. Heroes, in my opinion, is always being too underrated. I think it's a pretty good Sonic game, though not the best. Also, here's to hoping Sonic Unleashed being the newest best console Sonic game :P.

Shadow the Hedgehog - Shadow is one of the WORST Sonic characters and giving him his own game was even worse.

Sonic 2006 - A sad excuse for a Sonic game. Lets forget it ever happened.

Sonic Jam - Worst compilation of Sonic EVER.

3 things I have to say about Sonic (Next-Gen):

1- The songs are great, but...

2- The game is SOOOOOO awful, then...

3- They just created songs, not the game.

I found Sonic the Hedgehog (PS3) very disapointing I thought would be a next gen game really worth looking foward to see on a next gen console. I liked the CGI cutscenes because it reminds me of FF7 Advent Children. What I hated about this game was cheap deaths and poor gameplay.

Why Sega Why!

The angle of the camera was what I found to be quite annoying.

It was also too easy. The only time it was hard was in the very last level. <.<

Worst Sonic game ever? I should think Sonic Shuffle was probably that one... I never actually played it, but I mean, come on: the fastest thing alive being made into a card game, one of the slowest things around? The only thing worse than that (that I can think of) is Sonic Chess. XD

In general though, I liked the look & feel of Sonic Next-Gen... However, I only ever played the in-store demo game, which of course consits of only one level, so I can't say much. But I gotta say something here:

NO SONIC GAME SINCE THE 2D GENERATION HAS EVER REALLY BEEN THAT GOOD!

I realize that this will probably tick off a few people, just don't flame me too much.

Seriously though, think about it: Sonic 3D Blast, the beginning of the end, was pretty much just plain DUMB. Sonic Jam is hardly worth calling a 3D Sonic game. Ž_Ž Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 were (for the times) revolutionary graphics & gameplay speed, but their storylines (not to mention their VOICE ACTING) were pretty much crap. In fact, I've often said that SEGA would have done SO MUCH BETTER to go to the STH comic books for their story writing, but of course SEGA's Japanese & the comics are American, so that pretty much stomps on that.

Beyond that, there've been various Sonic games of varying size & success. Shadow the Hedgehog has been made fun of by many, so I'm guessing it's pretty stupid. Sonic heroes was reviewed by Game Informer with something like a 7 out of 10; apparently the PS2 version barely scraped 24 FPS. O_o

Basically, since the series of STH games moved out fof the 2D realm, they stopped being so good-gamey and started being more sorta-good-gamey-with-crappy-pseudo-plots. But then, show me a single game company that didn't deteriorate after making as many games as Sonic Team has. Even the Final Fantasy team, SquareSoft (or is it Square Enix now?) did a kind of knock-off sell-out when they made their only "sequel" game, FFX2.

Anyway, that's how I see it, without getting too emotional or judgemental of SEGA. I think they simply did the same as most long-term companies, no better, no worse. The sad part is that they could've done MUCH better... Ah well.

I guess I'll just stick with the STH comics from now on. :guitar:

Eh, well I agree that the 3D Sonics have never been brilliant it wasn't because of the story, yes the story was naff, but it hardly ruined the game any more than the actual gameplay problems. Hell I liked Sonic Adventure's story. Each 3D game has gotten worse with even lazier cameras and even more glitches. The only ones worth playing now are the few 2D ones that aren't even made by Sonic Team. Also Squenix was hardly top of their game before they made FFX-2 with each game in the FF series getting progressivly worse after FFVI.

in my opinion all the sonic games following the sonic adventure games its all gone downhill for poor old sonic, but the worst is going to have to be the new sonic unleashed from what i have seen the guys down at sonic team have spent too much time making the game look good for the first glance but the whole sonic having an almost wearwolf (spelling) other half to him!?!? the way sonic team are going everyone is going to loose faith in sonic, then thats it bye, bye sonic and he becoms yet another series of games to add to the "games that time forgot" list.

Oh God, no... Despite I don't say they're particularly bad (even FFVII isn't a bad game), I'm not really fond of them (although Edea kicks ass). There are way better JRPGs which deserve more love than Final Fantasy and far more love than they're actually getting.
Example: Valkyrie Profile, or to stay at SEGA, Shining Wind

Also@Topic:
I wouldn't say Sonic Heroes is actually that much of a good game. I was pretty disappointed by it. =/

Sonic heroes was "ok". It never really bothered me that much and the adventure series, I liked. I think those 3 were the last "good" Sonic 3D games, but the rest is just....do I need to say more?

Shadow the hedgehog was just complete failure....never liked the guy anyway and the gameplay was just horrible, not to mention the story plot plus guns. Why guns!? He's "supposed" to be the greatest supreme thing ever but he's using guns?

Sonic next gen? I only found a few glitches but nothing that bothered me. Sonic went too slow and the running levels was a "good" idea but lack of controls. They should have made that a little bit better plus it's the place where I found most of the glitches. And the camera was "ehh". Truth is, I actually liked the story plot (except a few things that you guys already know that killed it xD) And like every Sonic game, the music was the best. OOO and the cut scenes were the best.

Secret rings was a good idea. It wasn't that bad actually. It's got sort of good reviews also. I didn't like the attacking controls and making him walk backwards was unnecessary. Everything else was "ok".

Everyone doesn't like Sonic Shuffle even though they never played it. Well it shouldn't be considered as a Sonic 3D game 'cause it's more of a random fun side game that's in 3D XD like Mario party. In fact, IT IS Mario party, but Sonic. It was very amusing and passes time very quickly if you had friends over or at a party at least.

Let's hope Sonic Unleashed is good. :O It looks promising but that's what everyone said about Sonic 06...

The worst sonic game in my opinion is probably Sonic 3D Blast. I beat that game about 15 times. It was so easy. The bad camera angles don't help either, but it was easy even with those camera angles. Takes me about three hours to beat it. The best one, I'm not sure, because I haven't played them all. But I like Sonic Adventure 2. That's fun, I beat it three times with all A rank now I think. And I have a devil and angel chao level 99 in all status. And I have about 126,000 rings left over. I play it too much I guess.:blink:

That is true. I did it with a regular controller. I didn't really have a big problem, but it was okay. I only screwed up about 3 times every run I made through that game. It was mainly on the last boss that I screwed up though, and the volcano zone. *shivers* I hated that zone. -_-

Why do people hate Sonic 3D and Tails Adventure so much? Although they weren't brilliant they weren't that bad. Specially Tails Adventure. If you pass the fact that Tails throws bombs it's a nice game that showed a different gameplay from what people were used to from Sonic games.

I was almost like the Angry Video Game Nerd when I played that game on Sonic Mega Collection +. The game lacked speed at the maximum... Even when you finish the level, they say stuff like: "Speed: 600 km/h". When did Sonic got that fast with that amount of speed on the game? Bored, I can understand, but lost ? o_O
The level 4 was large, but not SO large... was it ?

well anyway, my personal worst Sonic Game is Shadow the Hedgehog.
=>Cruddy graphics, we were in the late PS2 era, and it looks like Sonic Adventure...
=>Weapons ? I know much about weapons, but it's just not fitting with the Sonic universe. And besides, an M4A1 is around 85 cm long (which is 33,46 inches), when you know Shadow is around 1 metre (39,37 inches)... just not realistic
=>Graphical effects were bad, just look at the bullet trails. They're radiant red, while it should be pale yellow... and not that thick...
=>The only good point was the "choose your side", and the insane number of endings possible. Well... it gets you bored for sure. Who wants to play again such a crappy game ?
=>Not to mention the storyline. At least, we have the past of the black hedgie, but... aliens, Black Arms ? It's... I want to say "tasteless".
=>The music. It sounds more like Rock FM than anything else. Only the ending music actually rocked, with excellent groups such as Crush 40, Powerman 5000... but ending music is not ingame music.
=>Overall, the game was poor, without any true interest. Shadow the Hedgehog can be among the "basic simple platform games". Nothing awesome.

I felt the graphics were good enough, I had it on Xbox and they were pretty good =] keeping in mind it was going for a darker theme

=>Weapons ? I know much about weapons, but it's just not fitting with the Sonic universe. And besides, an M4A1 is around 85 cm long (which is 33,46 inches), when you know Shadow is around 1 metre (39,37 inches)... just not realistic

In a world where hedgehogs reach supersonic speeds and have fights with aliens and the military, The length of an M4A1 isn't too important :P

=>Graphical effects were bad, just look at the bullet trails. They're radiant red, while it should be pale yellow... and not that thick...

The red shows up better than the yellow would have, again the thickness makes them more visable

=>The only good point was the "choose your side", and the insane number of endings possible. Well... it gets you bored for sure. Who wants to play again such a crappy game ?

I played through all the endings, I thought they were pretty cool =] I liked playing the alternate stages too

=>Not to mention the storyline. At least, we have the past of the black hedgie, but... aliens, Black Arms ? It's... I want to say "tasteless".

Finding out about his past was the highlight of the game for me, that and the first stage <3 I liked the aliens..it was a little out-there, but it at least gave an oppertunity to be EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVIL and not have to be with Eggman

=>The music. It sounds more like Rock FM than anything else. Only the ending music actually rocked, with excellent groups such as Crush 40, Powerman 5000... but ending music is not ingame music.

The music I felt was kick ass...darker theme, darker music, this ain't Ocean Zone or Emerald Hill -_-

=>Overall, the game was poor, without any true interest. Shadow the Hedgehog can be among the "basic simple platform games". Nothing awesome.

He had guns, multi-player, good graphics, good soundtrack, branching story paths, vehicles, large levels and a decent story, its not meant to hit critical acclaim, but I think it did its job well =] most sonic characters were featured at somepoint

Heh! I meant Lose -> Game Over XD not get lost!

Or you get a normal tire, a barrel of fuel, a rope and a copy of Sonic 360/PS3, then you get an arrow launcher, start a fire on a rope that's connected to the barrel and when the fire gets there, you shoot the game and you'll have a happily burned Sonic game. XD

Don't know if this game "technically" counts but I have played Knuckles Chaotix briefly before but never gave it a proper go so I thought I'd try and have a play through last night. Personally it felt a bit of a chore playing through it. It just feels so.....lifeless compared to the Sonic games. I'm not keen on the characters (though Charmy Bee comes in handy seeing how he can fly wherever he wants). The levels seem uninspired and all that bouncing around because your linked to your partner really annoyed me. The special stage is a 3D update of the Sonic 2 tunnel stage which wasn't too bad but I don't even see the point of the other one where you just float through a tunnel. I didn't like how you have to randomly pick a level rather than just going through the stages then face a boss. I just gave up in the end and turned it off. What does everyone else think?

Never has the sonic song "Can't Stop, Just Go" ever been more proudly needed when watching that game footage. :D
Actually, if Secret Rings would allow use of classic or Gamecube controllers then I would love it. It's just using the Wii remote it's impossible to do a homing attack. I move it forward quickly as instructed but 90% of the time Sonic does nothing -_-. I hope the controls improve on Unleashed.

So if Secret Rings wasn't a Wii game?

It was alright, would have been better if Sonic moved a little more freely and if SEGA didn't try to make the Wiimote do so much, steering is fine and quickly lifting the Wiimote up to jump is good aswell but then they make you do a whole lot more with it.

It strange as when I played Secret Rings I had no such problems with the remote. The only thing was Sonic not being able to stop right away, you held back and he skidded to stop and it seemed to take an age to stop completely. Apart from that and the difficulty of the game itself it was an enjoyable game but I know people out there don't really like it so I guess this is the Marmite of Sonic games, you either love it or hate it.

Rather than worst fans. "classic purists" suits better. ;)

Every Sonic games have his points, I donīt hate any of them.

2 games that I like less:

- Tails Sky Patrol:

A good concept of game, but the difficulty is hard, and since you donīt have rings to survive, or any other kind of life, youīll lose a lot if your reflexes arenīt too good.

A good challenging game, but you need a lot of practice, a lot of practice.

Even the first stage, which works like a tutorial, is hard. Now think the many obstacles youīll have on the original stages.

The music isnīt too memorable, sounds really different.

- Sonic Spinball (GG):

A small version of the orginal for Genesis, with new designs of stages and music.

Same gameplay like the genesis version, but with a mechanical a little odd. Hard to control sometimes.

Is a short game, but could become long if you canīt collect the emeralds fast.

The music isnīt that great, but there are some tunes very good.

You canīt expect too much of this game, could be a little boring if you arenīt a fan of Sonic.

Little reviews of why I donīt like those games too much.

I donīt hate them, I donīt play them very often, but yes sometimes to have fun.

Tails Sky Patrol isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it's a pretty decent game. As for Sonic Spinball (GG) it's basically a downgraded version of the Mega Drive game, but still enjoyable.

I'd have to say Sonic '06. I beat it the same day I got it and the final boss. Well it was horibble. I S ranked it on the first try and that was the WORST final boss of any Sonic the Hedgehog game I've ever done. I can understand having to use 3 super form hedgehogs against a super-dimensional boss but come on it was overkill to fight that boss.

I'll use a couple of spoiler tags case anyone doesn't want anything....well....spoiled...XD

I felt the boss was overkill too, I spent forever trying to kill him with Silver and then found I had to beat it again....ugh...look at the achievements XD its all "Beat the ending" "Beat the super secret ending" "Beat the ultimate ending boss" can we not just have one ending? Well, I meant overkill fighting him as 3 super form hedgehogs (for me at least that made him way too easy, but then again after nearly 15+ years of gaming nothings really hard anymore) but your right about that too; long fight for an achievement and it can be hard for that kind of fight. I remember on Sonic Adventure the final fight against Chaos was tough too, kept knocking me out of rings.

Worst Sonic game ever? I should think Sonic Shuffle was probably that one... I never actually played it, but I mean, come on: the fastest thing alive being made into a card game, one of the slowest things around? The only thing worse than that (that I can think of) is Sonic Chess. XD

I can confirm for you that Sonic Shuffle for the Dreamcast is absolutely horrific for so many reasons and more than lives up to its notorious reputation. It is not only the worst Sonic game I have ever played, it is perhaps the worst game I have ever played period.

Imagine Mario Party, slow down its already tediously sluggish pace till it is positively glacial, replace Mario characters with Sonic characters, substitute the irritating twists involving Bowser or Happening stars with having your fate determined by playing cards, have the levels look as dull and lifeless as possible, substitute the amusing, colourful minigames with broken, bland and infuriatingly unfair minigames and sap the game of any small trace of life, tension or lasting appeal that Mario Party had.

Actually, forget I said all of that. It seems silly to dignify this monstrosity so much as to call it a game. If Sonic Shuffle were a person, it would be a walking advertisement for post-natal abortion..

I hated ScrewAttack's Top Worst Sonic games to be quite honest. COMPLETELY disagreed with the entire thing, mainly because the points they made were completely biased and mostly untrue.

You may say, "lol, the Sonic fanboy of the fanboys incoming!" but let me elaborate.

Sonic R is my favorite Sonic title. It was pretty polished for its time, and got 7.0+ reviews for the time it was out. It was the only title where Sonic felt like he had momentum. ScrewAttack claims he controlled "like a tank," so you'd prefer Sonic to control like he does in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)? Yeah, that's what I thought.

When you try to stop, you skid to a stop instead of stopping on a dime. When you want to make a sharper turn, the sense of speed is made more apparent because you have to hold L or R. It just feels natural, and the music was phenominal. ScrewAttack's taste in music is pretty terrible too; seriously, why the knocks on Offspring in 3+ of their videos?

Shadow the Hedgehog was also one of the best 3D platformers of past generation in my opinion. All Sonic Team did(a different studio mind you, but it was still Sonic Team) was take Sonic Heroes, polished up the engine a little, and made it about one fast-moving, fun-as-heck hedgehog. No, it wasn't Sonic, but Shadow is just an interesting of a character in my opinion.

Again, no, it wasn't Sonic, so we didn't get any bright and beautiful ocean or hilly scenary, but I enjoyed it because of the gameplay, not the griddy(yet fitting) graphics.

The homing attack was polished, meaning that it was a lot harder to actually miss what you're aiming at. Shadow has a 'whoa' animation when approaching a cliff so it was harder to fall into bottomless pits. Speaking of which, the level design was ace because there were less bottomless pits altogether(again, although less colorful)!

I enjoy watching ScrewAttack, don't get me wrong, it's just I heavily disagree with a lot of their opinions as well. I respect your opinion if you disagree with mine, I just felt like ranting..

The worst Sonic game in my opinion is a tie between Sonic Labyrinth (Gamegear) and Sonic the Hedgehog(2006). Reasons being that I got so bored of SL I almost fell asleep at one point. The game was..decently polished, it was just a bad idea.

Sonic '06 had numerous issues. The only positive point I can give it is that you could use the homing attack on rails. Regardless of that, they made an engine from the ground up, rushed it, made it practically impossible to jump off vertical walls when climbing as Knuckles or Rouge, the sense of speed was diminished because it was easier to stop on a dime than any other past 3D Sonic title, and Sonic actually SLOWS DOWN when he jumps. Furthermore, when Sonic jumps, it's not an attack! A Sonic game, when Sonic jumps, doesn't HURT anything! TERRIBLE.

Thanks for reading if you did.. I'd definitely appreciate any replies, I'll try to sound more positive outlooking in later posts. >.>

I haven't played many new Sonic titles since SONIC ADVENTURE, but good points again, IceHedge. I've heard pretty good things said about SHADOW on some other boards too - seems like this is definitely an underrated title.

The last Sonic I played was SECRET RINGS on the Wii. It was okay - it had a few nice bits of story and I appreciate what it tried to do with the wiimote. Still a little too kiddie for me, but it's been like that basically since Sonic could talk in these games.

If I had to pick a worst it would probably be SONIC 3D BLAST. The isometric viewpoint just did not fit the game at all, and the problem with bringing him to "3D" (if you can even call it that) was that all sense of speed was completely sacrificed. I can't think of a slower Sonic platformer out there. The fact that we got BLAST instead of XTREME on the Saturn is just salt in the wound as far as I'm concerned.

I enjoy watching ScrewAttack, don't get me wrong, it's just I heavily agree with a lot of their opinions as well. I respect your opinion if you disagree with mine, I just felt like ranting..

Thanks for the kind words, grolt and WolfDemon59! I think I've just been hanging around too many 'negative' people. It's good to see actual fans of Sonic on a Sonic forum for once, or atleast positive-outlooking people. XD

As for Sonic 3D Blast, I'd have to say it was a let-down at the time of its release. Sega was proclaiming it to be the first epic 3D Sonic experience, and..that was hardly the case. Like you said, it was just an isometric adventure game at its core, but I did love the music on the Saturn version.

Thanks for welcoming me to the forum, too!

Please elaborate on what "Sonic Generations" is supposed to be. It would be the first time I heard of this. I normally don't comment on things like this, but this caught my attention.

Maybe he talks about Sonicīs Ultimate Genesis collection?

*POST*

Sincerely, I donīt have the most remote idea of what is ScrewAttack. =P
Anyway, nice post, certainly I agree at the majority of what you said.

Iīm pretty neutral when it comes to Sonic. Better said, Iīm from both sides.

Is alright talk about the good and bad things about the games, but there are times when rather than disscusion, is only bashing, bashing, bashing, and it gets tiresome.

Welcome for my part too. =)

(This is my idea of the game. Sega didn't think of it yet.)Sonic Generations is Sonic one and two remade for DS (No crappy GBA Look alike.) with Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure Graphics. Possibility because I'm guessing they MIGHT ( And I Said this is possible!) make one for the DS because the GBA bombed. We don't see a Sonic 2 for GBA and that good. So DS would be great I already suggested it to Sega and they said this "Thank you of your idea on this matter we shall let other members think of this opinion of this in the future."
Sega Genesis Ultimate Collection would be Great!

ScrewAttack is an online series of videos that humorously review(without a score) old videogames, much like the Angry Videogame Nerd if you've heard of that craze. ScrewAttack has their official website and they are also featured on GameTrailers.com.

Welcome for my part too. =)Thank ya! =D

Actually, there was an interview at one point. A Sega representative said that they do not plan on remaking the original Sonic games.

Here's the article before that one, it was more hopeful:

http://www.sonicstadium.org/news/sonic-team-could-do-a-game-like-mega-man-9

I wouldn't trust Sonic Stadium beyond the factual news side if you want my not-asked-for advice, but sadly, the truth is that the Genesis games won't be remade on the DS. >.<

They tried that on the GBA, it flew straight from the shelves into the toilet.

I’m not sure if this is true but the team that did the GBA port of Sonic 1 was a small dev studio in the US and it was so bad that they did not want there names in the games credits. Not sure if that’s true but if you were working on a port of a classic game that turned out shit you would not want your name in the credits as well.

What do you mean? O.o Don't blame the guys who made that crummy port or don't blame the fanboys for buying it?

I'd definitely blame that sorry arse studio for making such a terrible port. Sonic the Hedgehog on the GBA was such a disappointment I for once completely agreed with most reviews.

When Sonic Advance first came out, I was let down because the levels weren't all that great, and it just felt like a Genesis-Sonic wanna-be. Later entries in the Sonic Advance series felt much more unique and I enjoyed them more, but what I really wanted was a Genesis Sonic on the go. Needless to say when that came out, yeah, terrible port. Way too much slowdown among other things.
