I know it sounds redundant, but here's the point of this thread.

Should Saturday Night SEGA get 50 listeners TONIGHT (10pm UK time, tell your friends), next week's show will be the third ever Saturday Night Special, meaning three hours of fun and games. Only this time, there won't be one theme...there'll be three.

Oh, and you get to choose.

There's 9 options in the poll above, but don't feel you're confined to those, they're just the popular ones. If you have another suggestion, click Other and tell me in a post which one you're going for. I'll log them in a notepad file.

The top three will be chosen. The third most popular will air first from 9-10, the second most popular will air from 10-11, and the most popular will air from 11-12.

I'm starting the poll now because next week's show will be pre-recorded, so I need to know by WEDNESDAY!

Have fun, and good luck! The nature of next week's show rests on your shoulders!

Incase you didn't know there is more and more controversy in the news and press about this game as in the Multiplayer you can play on the terrorists side and as such shoot US soldiers. There was an MP over in in Britain calling for it to be banned as it unbritish (even thoughthere aren't any british soldiers in the game) and now the game has been banned from being sold in or near any military bases in the US. What do you think about this? Is it just a game? or is there a line that shouldn't be crossed and having a game where you shoot US soldiers in a conflict which is going on now is crossing it?

I've been playing it a lot lately, so figured I could write about it

Fable 2

What I enjoy most about Role Playing Games is the ability to actually role play a character within a fantasy world. Western RPG’s can be more fun in this respect as many give you the choice to create and shape your own character, allowing you to scope your own imagination to whatever limit the game world imposes on you. This is why games like The Elder Scrolls and the Fable series draw me back in time and time again. Each new game is a different character, a different world.

My recent Fable 2 addiction then has lead to a few new characters and worlds. In one, I started as an evil gun-toting assassin that ended up as a woman by the end of the game. My second character was an obese holy man that was also too lazy to use a sword, but who wanted to do right by the world, despite how tiring it was. The third was a sword wielding family man that accidentally gave freshly picked flowers to the bloke standing next to his wife, leading to a quick divorce and issues relating to his own sexuality.

I am a big fan of the Fable series and they certainly continue to grow. The world is much bigger than the original Xbox classic, instead of a HUD we are guided by man’s best friend that accompanies you everywhere, able to be trained in fighting and treasure hunting. Instead of bows we now have pistols, rifles and blunderbusses and a few other changes.. But at the heart of the world of Albion is the same British humour and charm, weaved across an epic Robin Hood style aesthetic as you travel across a variety of lands, defeating bandits, balverines and hobbes and you can still woo men and women alike with a series of different expressions, ranging from flirting to farting.

The ‘good vs evil’ choices are back, which also affect the appearance of your hero as well as the reaction of NPC’s around you. However, we also have a new alignment between ‘purity’ and ‘corruption’ which is affected by the foods you eat and your general greediness. The morality options may have seemed somewhat clichéd in the first game, but they’ve been tweaked here and include choices with real consequences, some of which cause you to stop and think.

The combat is more or less the same, but has been simplified somewhat in order to attract a more casual audience. Melee, ranged and magic attacks are mapped to a button each and skills can be learnt by gathering related experience. There were some criticisms about the simplicity of the single button combat, but I honestly never felt put off with it and liked mixing up short and long range attacks. I especially enjoyed the sub-targeting option for long range weapons.

The difficulty curve has also been reduced, and this is perhaps the crucial difference between the two Fable games. In the first, all damage your character took was converted into scars and being defeated resulted in retries. In the sequel, if you are defeated, you lose experience and become scarred; however the Knothole download content offers ways to remove scarring, meaning that not even this is a punishment in itself. Players can pick up from where they left off when beaten and it is debatable whether this is a better way to handle failure over a blank game over screen or not.

Personally speaking, the only thing from the original Fable that I missed in its successor was the exp bonuses for chaining attacks and also the boast challenges which allowed you to set your own difficulty level for quests. I would love to see that return again.

The ending of the game also received some criticism. Firstly, the end itself is somewhat anti-climatic. Secondly, your dog remains an important gameplay mechanism throughout, yet at the end you are forced to make a choice which could include losing your faithful companion. Some gamers failed to recognise the ramifications of such a choice and what it meant within the game, thus the option became available within the Knothole DLC to return your dog back to you.

The DLC by the way is a welcome addition and comes in two packages: Knothole Island introduces a whole new town and three additional dungeons. Here there are new clothes, weapons and special items which can alter the physical appearance of your hero as well as the aforementioned dog replacement. The second, See the Future, is split between two quests, a preview of Albion’s future within the third Fable game, and an added coliseum where you can fight for points and glory. This also adds extra items and also achievements, both DLC are fun and add more to the Fable world.

It is credit to the Fable games that I continue to play them so much. Fable has grown, perhaps in directions that the hardcore gamers may not always appreciate, but it still remains a fun game which looks at RPG’s in a more light hearted way. The third game in the series is due out later this year and will be growing in even stranger directions, with the promise of a darker Charles Dickens inspired world and strategic elements thrown in the mix. I’m excited to see where it will go and know I’ll probably be playing that one for months to come as well.

Limbo
Xbox Live Arcade

The first game by Denmark based studio Playdead Is stunning to look at, to play and to finish. Limbo is a 2D puzzler but it may come as a shock to find that it isn't that puzzling. From simple 'push a crate here' to full-blown Physics (push a crate here, reverse gravity and turn the electric on) the puzzles are rarely repeated and seem logical and fun to solve. It's not until near end where you stop and think, "crap, I'm stuck" and that time will come sooner than most will hope for.

Limbo's beginning is probably the highlight of the entire game however as the forest in which you wake is the most interesting and atmospheric setting in the whole game. Tree's and strange buildings become visible through the mist; strange tribes and creatures try to foil you at every turn. Some RPG's would struggle to create such sense of place within such a short amount of time.

The style is moody, using German Expressionist styles in glorious HD to paint an Interesting and Immersive world. Despite being almost abstract the world in which you play in is completely released and believable. There are three ‘levels’ that blend seamlessly into one another, and it really feels like you’re on a journey. The levels do not increase in difficulty in a conventional way (there are not more bad guys or less life) the puzzles get more intricate and greater in length.

The boy you control, despite being void of all detail is well animated and believable. He is a lonely silhouette with two piercing, blinking white eyes. His movements are incredibly childlike, shifting his weight whilst running down hill and raising his arms to potential movable objects. This is a great design aspect as it lets the player know what is interactive and what is not. You want to take care of him, right up to the point where is head is brutally departed from his body by a bear-trap. Do you feel sorry for the decapitated boy? No. Because the act of his death will normally show you a solution to the problem laid before you! That and the fact the check pointing in this game makes you hardly ever shout out "What, I have to do THAT again"

The sound design, like its monochrome palate is minimalist, with only a few powerful discords to punctuate certain sights or events. However the sound effects used are brilliant, and add real depth to the beautifully crafted, yet morbid world. Not that the morbidity will stop you from laughing at the recently deiced boy and the various parts of him falling away from your mistimed jump.

Some of the puzzles in Limbo are immediately apparent but take platforming skill to solve. Factors such as trajectory, timing and speed are used to great effect setting the game apart from such titles 'Professor Layton And The Curious Village'. Due to this platforming element of this game the player is drawn into the game rather than feeling stranded on the other side of the screen as some other popular point and click puzzlers can do.

It’s hard to write a review about a game you’re in love with, so I’ll stop here before the love juices flow. Lets just end on:
If I were trapped in Limbo I wouldn't mind one bit, apart from the constant death and mind maggots.

I couldn't find a thread about this, so figured this would be a good place to discuss it!

Sonic Adventure has just been dated on Xbox Live Arcade for the 15th September and the price will be 800 MS Points. No news on the PSN release or price though.

I don't think 800 points is too bad, actually, and if other Dreamcast re-releases are at this price, then they're pretty good value!

I'm not sure if I'll buy it though, since I have the original and DX versions.

Anyone interested in getting it?

Well now, here's my contribution for this Review Centre!

Ok, overview first: [PROTOTYPE] is an sandbox action-adventure game developed by Radical Entertainment and published by Activision on June of last year. It got a comic book revealing more about it's story, which it will be briefed shortly. The game got an aggregate score of 80% on Metacritic.

The game occurs in New York City, focusing on the Manhattan area, where a plague named BLACKLIGHT (And yes, some words are in all caps, like in the game).

Click to reveal

Which originated on the city of Hope, in 1966, according to the plot. The only survivor was Elizabeth Greene.

The main character, Alex Mercer, is one of the infected, and he has no memory from his past. Apart from the other infected, he can shapeshift, making him able to switch to different weapons during the game, examples being a Blade, the Hammerfists, a Whip, and so on. He can also consume people (Y, on the 360 controller, as default), to get: From Humans/Military, Life and a skin for the disguise, and on Infected, to get more life.

Click to reveal

On Special Infected (Supreme, Leader Hunters), on certain points of the story, they reveal more of what has transpired.

Now, from what I've played, the game is ok. It's not as much like inFAMOUS, but it has similarities. which aren't too noticeable, like the example of the powers. Although Prototype's was a well-elaborated idea.
And as it's a sandbox game, it's basically the type of game that you need to go and do missions. there are Story Missions and Events. The Story Missions basically give it away, and the Events are for those who want to get more EP's (Experience Points) and buy all Upgrades in the game.

The game's difficulty is graded in this (on Normal, by the way):

Quote:

Ok, easy for a Normal guy. ----> Now we're talking! ----> Are you serious? ----> Why is it annoying me? ---> RAAAAAAGE

I AM SERIOUS. /caps
The game's difficulty gets harder and Harder and HARDER when you progress. usually stupidly hard or the so-frustrating-you-must-try-until-completion hard (like Megaman).

Click to reveal

Examble being, Elizabeth Greene's Second form and Captain Cross's Supreme Hunter form. Seriously, I spent over 3 hours each just to defeat them, respectively. I shudder to imagine how they would look like in Hard.

And the Events are somewhat easy, depending on your skill. To get a Gold can be: Or easy if you have mastered some of the moves, or hard if you are just a bit weak on the controls. but it does enhance the replayability.

Overall, Prototype is not the best game ever, nor one of the best, but it still bring a fun time to anyone who enjoys sandbox games. it's powers are okay, the difficulty gets really annoying, but it's fun, the graphics are okay and although the replayability is low, it still gives you a lot to explore. If you have a free time to burn, get this and be sure to look into a deep story.

I posted this on my site a while ago, bit figured it would sit pretty here ^_^ Sorry I wrote a lot though!

Alpha Protocol

There are many different types of role playing games these days. The lines have become so blurred, that I had to stop and think a few times whilst writing my grand old list of Sega RPG’s and ask myself “Well, is this really an RPG?”. Many modern games fit under the banner of ‘action game with RPG elements’ and despite Alpha Protocol touting itself as the world’s first spy RPG, I had a hard time believing it. First and foremost, Alpha Protocol is an action game, but with an underlying level of stats and choices.

Whilst most games give an illusion of choice, the choices within Alpha Protocol actually created a different path within each game. Sometimes these changes would be as black and white as choosing to save a known innocent life over a group of unknown innocents, and sometimes they were more subtle, such as choosing to sneak through a certain mission and avoid killing American agents. Actually, it was after getting blasted by NPC’s later in the story for shooting an American agent in order to make an easy escape did I feel an immense amount of shame and guilt, causing me realise just how clever the choices within the game actually were. In-game choices actually came with their own time limit, forcing you to make up your mind quickly and react as you would in a real-life situation, creating a lovely sense of pressure missing from other games.

Gameplay then, is split between missions focusing on the three main areas of Moscow, Rome and Taipei. The order you choose to complete missions has an effect on Intel, items and NPC interaction within the game, including the support you are able to gain within certain missions and at the end game. Whilst all missions have an end goal, the player can choose how they wish to approach them; by barging in guns blazing, sneaking around, breaking into computer systems, or a mixture as the situation calls for it. Combat is straight third-person shooting and is tied in towards character stats.

You’ll be forgiven for thinking that Alpha Protocol feels very similar to the original Mass Effect in terms of presentation, as the character levelling system is a straight translation. The player can level up their version of Thornton by assigning stats to skills such as stealth, weapons, sabotage, and so on. These also unlock abilities which makes the game much easier later on, such as invisibility, or ‘spy’s luck’ which gives you an extra chance should you fail at the hacking mini-games.

Alongside combat, the player must also hack computers, pick locks, and shut down security systems via some short mini-games. The mini-games themselves only start to get frustrating on the harder difficulty modes and can be bypassed for the most part with tech items.

Fact is, Alpha Protocol isn’t much of an RPG. Besides the levelling system, forced NPC conversation cut-scenes and random items you can acquire within missions, the only true freedom exists within missions. You can explore your own personal safe house for each city, but not actually do anything with them. You can respond to NPC conversations, but not initiate any yourself. Alpha Protocol isn’t much of an action game either. Combat can feel slow and dull, enemy A.I is laughably pathetic at times and offers no real challenge. Even on the hardest difficulty setting, the A.I remains the same, only their bullets cut a bit deeper. Many gamers have also complained of bugs and glitches, although the ones I came across didn’t seem to affect gameplay. Some missions are actually quite fun, but for the most part, the level design remains uninspired. The whole game itself can be completed fairly quickly in about ten hours.

But, it is the choices which enable the game to last longer. The core missions and story may remain the same, but the way you play, and the relationships with NPC’s change dramatically. The story itself may not be the most original on paper, but the characters are diverse and interesting enough to interact with multiple times. The length of the game actually encouraged me to complete the story again and again, unlocking new abilities and dialogue choices which, actually, were kind of fun.

On the whole, the choice of trying Alpha Protocol rests with you. If you’re after a real spy RPG, you will be disappointed, but if there is room for some lightweight action in your Saturday afternoon, it may be worth a try.
