Whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhy??? It's Sonic the sodding Hedgehog. He's the product of a 90's marketing team, aiming at 9 year olds. Why does a cartoon hedgehog need to be serious or story focused?Quills on Wheels wrote:No I want a Sonic game with a much more serious story then colors that spends throughout a couple of games like an arc.
Wow, that footage is mario galaxy as fuck.
Agreed. You can't make a serious story in a series staring a blue cartoon hedgehog whose main enemy is a round fatty with a walrus 'stach.Kaito-kun wrote:Whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhy??? Yeah I understand and that's true. I did say before that the way Sonic is going now isn't doing him any bad and it's actually good but like I said, for someone like me who is no longer a 9 year old, the Sonic franchise isn't appealing as much anymore and you would probably say it isn't supposed to which is also true.
I suppose this is why I enjoy the Sonic Archie comic storyline much more. Because it's a much more continuous and somewhat more serious story then its videogame counterpart.
By serious I don't necessarily want anything adultish. I just wish that the story surrounded the Sonic franchise was a bit more fleshed out instead of the usual Eggman does something bad, it backfires, Sonic saves the day again. A story we don't expect. A story that is grab us by a twist of some sort. That is what the Sonic Adventure games were all about. A story that amerced me and maybe others into the whole thing. The legend of Chaos or the History of Shadow the Hedgehog. Yes those were truly interesting.
Nowadays Sonic games seem to follow Mario's trend of not even trying to think of a unique story. Granted, Generations was alright, but Sonic games are becoming overall like Mario games where it's all about the same old routine of saving the princess and saving the day.
After reading this and thinking about it, I've come to realize that I'm a person who cares much more about a good storyline then a good gameplay. Sounds foolish yes, but this comes from a person who (somewhat) enjoyed games such as Shadow the Hedgehog or Sonic 06 simply because they at least TRIED making a well thought story with twists beyond the eye could see. (mind you, they didn't necessarily succeed.)
Right, except there really is no place for that in a Sonic game. They've tried, it was cringe worthy, Sonic just isn't the franchise for it.Quills on Wheels wrote:Yeah I understand and that's true. This isn't new though, this is them returning to what they did before and it was the right choice.Quills on Wheels wrote:Nowadays Sonic games seem to follow Mario's trend of not even trying to think of a unique story. But no Sonic game has ever had a good story and I doubt it ever will. To prefer story over the actual game is a dangerous path to go down and isn't very rewarding. So few games are actually well written, and even fewer that are and fun to play.Quills on Wheels wrote:After reading this and thinking about it, I've come to realize that I'm a person who cares much more about a good storyline then a good gameplay. Good! Enjoy the comics! But you're forgetting that the comic and the games are aiming at different audiences. The comics are aimed at people who are already a fan of the franchise and who do want more from it in terms of story. The games are aimed at a much broader audience who might not give a damn about the subjects covered in the comic.Quills on Wheels wrote:I suppose this is why I enjoy the Sonic Archie comic storyline much more. Maybe it's time you moved away from the Sonic franchise towards something more story focused? Especially if you're expecting something that the Sonic games aren't not going to provide any time soon.Quills on Wheels wrote:After reading this and thinking about it, I've come to realize that I'm a person who cares much more about a good storyline then a good gameplay. From what I've seen of both the Wii U and 3DS versions, the game looks promising. Though it does seems some parts of the Wii U version lacks some things (not what though) and the 3DS version clearly needs more work. In addition, Dimps are still making the handheld titles, yet from what I saw on the 3DS, they just might be getting out of the gutter this time around.
Radio Gang Since October 2010
I suggest Ratchet and Clank if you want cartoony visuals and all that and tells a story. And people would say Sonic 3&K was the 'best Sonic Team can get as far as telling a story using what they were given at the time' or whatever.
Anyway; seen both footage, loved both. Yes it's all Mario Galaxy-esque up in here, but I still see a Sonic game that is going in a direction that I'm pleased with.
OHNOESDIMPSISMAKING3DSVERSIONABANDONSHIP...oh sod off. It looks fine to me for the build displayed currently.

To be fair, I do look at other places for Story. That's for sure. Mind you, I no longer play games as much as I used to and I haven't played Sonic games in ages.
I admit that I no longer feel the same affection I had towards sonic years ago. I still love him and he's still my favorite franchise due to the pure history I've had with the character. Even now, as a character, he is still awesome, though he's games no longer appeal to me as much as they used to. I believe Sonic colors was the last actual Sonic game I bothered finishing (Haven't really gone far with Generations...). And the last game featuring sonic I played was ASRT.
So yeah, nowadays I suppose Sonic is all about collecting and the comics for me. Still I wouldn't mind picking this game up some day and play it.
