Chickaroo Reviews: Tomb Raider: Anniversary (PS3)

Post by chickaroo1 »

It's the 10th (well 11th in this case) anniversary of the Tomb Raider series! And what better way to celebrate Lara's first debut than a remake to the game that started it all and changed the way we see games today. This is Tomb Raider: Anniversary for the PS2 / PS3.

Game: Tomb Raider: Anniversary
Systems: PC, PS2, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii, mobile phones, Mac OS X, PS3
Release dates: PC & PS2: 6/01/07 (EU), 6/05/07 (NA), 6/07/07 (AU), 3/27/08 (JP, PS2 only)
PSP: 8/09/07 (NA), 10/26/07 (EU), 11/02/07 (AU), 3/27/08 (JP)
Xbox 360: 10/23/07 (NA), 10/26/07 (EU), 11/02/07 (AU), 3/27/08 (JP)
Wii: 11/13/07 (NA), 12/07/07 (EU), 2/07/08 (AU), 3/27/08 (JP)
Playstation 3: 3/22/11 (NA), 3/25/11 (EU), 3/31/11 (AU)
Developers: Crystal Dynamics

Just Like Old Times
Story: Since this is a remake of the original Tomb Raider, not a whole lot has changed. Adventurer Lara Croft is hired by a buissnessworman named Jacqueline Natla who owns Natla Technologies to find a mysterious artifact called the Scion. What power does the Scion hold? You'll have to join Lara on her adventure and find out!

Walking Down Nostalgia Lane...But A lot Better Looking
Gameplay: If you've played Tomb Raider: Legend, then you'll be right at home. Gameplay here is a lot like Legend. You can jump, climb, swing, and shoot your way around these tombs and find health packs, artifacts and solve puzzles. Lara can find other guns to use besides her pistols.
Was the original game tough for you? Well the designs of the levels are reworked to help newcomers not to be terribly confused. Also there is a difficulty setting once you start a new game.
There are some relics in the levels that you can collect as well. Get all in an area and you'll be rewarded with a new outfit!

Kind of Like An HD Remake
Graphics: The graphics here are pretty impressive. As a remake to a 1996 game, Crystal Dynamics really put effort into the presentation. Good job.

Sounds Kind of Familiar, But a Little Different
Music: In the original Tomb Raider series, there wasn't a whole lot of music that plays as you play unless you discover a secret or enemies are nearby.
This time, it's kind of like that.
The theme song has gotten remixed and remade was well. It has the same opening notes a little but instead of an eerie song, it's a lot calmer and peaceful. Still a nice listen.
The music is composed by Troels Brun Folmann.

Is It Nice to See A Remake of a Classic?
Overall: Anniversary does what it promises. A remake of a classic game starring a female who showed the world that girls can be heroes, even in video games. It's fun and challenging. Old fans and new fans will definitely enjoy this game.

love this game, an easy 5 for me. I've completed it so many times, live streaming the first 2 games in the trilogy was a blast (though fortunately no evidence of that remains)

It's different because the platforming changes a lot compared to the original. The controls make the action better but the jumping and climbing is mushier. I liked the harsh precision needed in the original, it was like dancing in chains.
Tic Tac, sir?
