Interesting question I suppose first memory of playing a computer game and liking the game music. My dad had an amstrad and I loved playing tetris and dig dug, tetris was good music but dig dug was even better although the music in the game was a song from 60s I think anyway it was called popcorn and the addictive music went well with the addictive game. I always have liked computer game music as well as movie soundtracks. I feel if great music is linked to a visual memory you enjoy it more. Fast forward to 1997 after completing ffvii I decided to buy the soundtrack and in fact I bought ffix and ffx soundtracks before the game had even come out in uk, I bought the sonic adventure 2 soundtrack. Then I was going retro I loved my megadrive but I had a ps1, so I decided to get a saturn and realised many games you could play cd in a cd player. I bought sega touring car game and the music blew my mind wow. Then with youtube you can listen to anything.

The first time I took a notice to video game music was probably the first time I finished Sonic Adventure DX on my computer and reached the final boss with Super Sonic. Before then, Videogame music was just there, like story in a porn clip. It wasn't until I heard the full Open your heart theme durring the boss fight that I really felt the importance of good music in a videogame. In fact I think it's thanks to that theme that made that final boss fight so memorable for me.

The first time I would say is when I played Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES and Sonic 2 on the Mega Drive. The first time I actually got into the music, as to be down to Sonic 3's soundtrack.

I play Sonic Unleashed and loved endless possibility, that is what started it.

After that, played Sonic Heros and found out about the sound test and started realizing that video game music is real music too.

Ever sense then, I've been humming beats in my head for years.

and that before I got on the internet!

For me it was The Journeyman Project on my mom's Pentium 1 computer when I was in sixth grade. That game has the most amazing freaking music. As far as actually becoming obsessed with VGM, though, it started when I rediscovered Sonic in college in 2002.

Like games, liked music. Put 2 and 2 together and went onto some dodgy websites to download low quality versions of Sonic Heroes and Knight of the Wind...

It all escalated from there.

This is a great question!

The earliest I can think of, aside from just liking music whist playing a game, was probably using the sound select screen and listening to stuff on the Mega Drive. Then... in the early internet days it was listening to midi files, but always knowing that they weren't the real deal (maybe they got better, I don't know). The site I went to was called vgmusic.com, I just checked and it's still there.
