I think there taught to hate us in school. Funny thing is I know a few Scots that have animosity to the English but I don't know any Englishman that gives two shits about the Scots. Im not really sure where it comes from.

EDIT: I say that and then just read KFB'S post XD

Just because I hate England doesn't mean I hate the English.

It's like hating the Xbox but liking Halo, you know?

And KFB, don't make me dig up the age old oil example. We're perfectly capable of being self-sufficient.

It's interesting...first of all it'd need a cracking majority, like 80% of voters voting yes. Then it'd be taken to parliament down south...and they'd say no. And then there'd be anarchy :) I would honestly love to see what happens.

But it's unlikely to ever happen, one of the main reasons being that there's so many bloody english people living up here! That's like asking the Turkey's opinion on the Christmas Roast XD

Aww, why must Britain be divided? :(

I always refer to myself as British rather than English because I love Scotland and Wales as much as England, probably more actually since I live in England and the grass always seems greener elsewhere when you're surrounded by Chavs.

When I lived in Nottingham, I did notice a lot of animosity towards Scotland from my family and people surround me, which I never really understood. Since moving up to Newcastle, you don't get anything like that here, but we're not too far from Scotland anyway. You do get the occasional Scottish note here too from shops, which is always cool. Scottish money is pretty :3

Don't really care about Northern Ireland though, not offence to any Irish. I visited Belfast a few years and that place just didn't have a nice atmosphere at all.

There isn't really that much oil. It'd last a few decade but after that...

This applies to me also. (But swap all the Englands and Scotlands around.)

Yeah I suppose Somalia is self suffiient too. Don't know why you would want to take such a risk over your living standards just so you could call yourselves that.

I can see why people get annoyed with the Scottish. The barnet formula gives them more money per person than in England, hence the reason they get so many more little give aways from the government like the free uni fees. It is in effect a fiscal transfer from the rich areas of the country (England) to a poorer one. The justification is the private sector emplyment situation is so dire if it wasn't for the public services the place would be up queer street. We then go out of our way to pander their petty nationalism by erecting a totally uneccessary scottish parliament at the cost of god knows how much, and have to put up with their MPs having a say on how our country is run while making totally different decisions on their own.

Scotland is a preferential province, it contributes little, aside from the much vaunted dregs of crude in the north sea (oh how that keeps petrol prices down), gains so much from being in the Union and still acts in such an chippy, ungracious way.

And for every English person living north of the border, there's probably about 10 Scots down here.

Some more of my favourite points while I'm on a role.

How do we maintain independence? Well the fact that Scotland is the World's leading producer of wind energy certainly helps. This energy will bring in more revenue and development opportunities than oil and gas.

Scotland could build 2 High Schools or 16 wind turbines or 300 stream turbines or 256 two bedroom houses with a single day's Scottish Oil revenue, if the Scot's did not give it all to England.

In 2008 Scottish Oil that was worth £22,831 a minute, £32 million a day, £12 billion a year. (Of this, Scotland gets no money at all). It is the £1.2 Trillion to come out of the known oil and gas fields of the North Sea that are stopping the UK debt being junked, just like the Greek debt.

Oh, and they're just dregs? North Sea Oil will last for another 100 years according to most industry analysts.

---

Westminster wants to keep the American's sweet by spending £115 billion, when they cannot afford to renew Trident. Whilst the Trident submarines based a Faslane have now leaked untreated nuclear waste into the Gareloch over 40 times. If Faslane was a nuclear power plant it would have shut down by SEPA. Westminster also plan to close the submarine base at Plymouth and relocate all the nuclear submarines to Scotland.

----

It's one of the few issues that always gets me riled up.

England are so dead set on keeping everyone stuck together, simply because they can't cope without us. Cameron may moan about diminishing the British influence? Err, history says you had a fucking British Empire, look how that turned out.

As I said, I've got nothing against English folks as such x3 more than a few of my buddies are from down there. The independence issue is something I feel we deserve, more than anything, I'd just love to see how it would all play out. I genuinely think that if it went ahead and the Scottish population voted yes, we'd have anarchy. At least for a while. I'd be right there on the streets too x3.

Some optimistic claims there to say the least.

If you are relying on wind power, god help you.

100 years worth of oil left? Where did you get that figure from? Production has been falling rapidly over the last 10-15 years and is barely half of what it was in the 90s. There probably is a reasonable amount of oil left in some of the deeper and more extreme areas of the sea, but that will be really costly and tricky to extact and would need a big investment. All the easy oil has gone, it's over we drank your milkshake.

I don't know why you are saying you "give it all to England". It sounds like such a petulant thing to write. Firstly it is extracted by private companies (there is no such thing as Scottish Oil), and then the tax revenue is distributed (unfairly, per the barnet formula) across the country. Where are these figures from btw?

And can I have a link to a source that cites our debt is being held up by oil taxes too? I have not heard that one before and am fairly well read on economics.

Moaning about spending on defence is a bit ludicrous, around 5,000 jobs in Scotland are involved in the armed forces. Our two new aircraft carriers we can't really afford are being built in your country. You would lose a massive industry if that went.

And do you honestly think we feel we can't do without you? I have never heard anyone say that in my life. It's probably the other way around in reality.

Why have Scottish Independence? It's an absolute waste of time, would effectively drag Scotland to a similar financial situation with Iceland, Ireland and Portugal, as well as cause a lot more shit than it's needed. If a referendum comes, it will most likely be shot down easily by the public. The only reason why the SNP (or rather, Scottish Nazi Party as I call them) got a majority in a voting system designed to force coalitions is because Labour produced yet another negative campaigning featuring hiding in a Subway and the Lib Dems were getting punished for fucking with their voters by dropping the pledges they had in favour of the Tories. Many people in Scotland seem to be scared that Maggie Thatcher is going to come back and shut down everything again.

You do need to be surprised about the SNP though, they're pretty much a one-issue party featuring an issue which will be rejected. They are trying to force in nationalism everywhere, even on TV where they bribed STV into dropping good English shows in favour of funded rubbish which has encouraged many viewers to watch the ITV1 London feed if they have cable or satellite. They were effectively this year, everybody's protest vote.

You're probably asking, why didn't the Conservatives get nuked too? Because their situation in Scotland is so bad that there's only 1 MP in the UK government in a Scottish seat. The Lib Dems "betrayed" the British voters and they were screwed everywhere, including the English councils and of course, AV being rejected (which is a good thing by the way). Can't wait for the vote of no confidence for Nick Clegg. It'll certainly be coming soon.

Oh and while I'm at it, why hasn't there been much pushing for Welsh independence or even a split in England? They're focusing on better things than pushing a country into the Third World.
