Chickaroo Reviews - Sonic Riders (PS2)

Post by chickaroo1 »

Looks like Sonic has another racing game. But this time, on hoverboards. Will this game go over well? The kickoff to Sonic's 15th anniversary begins here!Game: Sonic Riders
Systems: Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2, Microsoft Windows, Xbox
Release Dates: GC / PS2 / Xbox: 2/21/06 (NA), 2/23/06 (JP), 3/17/06 (EU), 3/23/06 and 3/30/06 (AU)
Windows: 11/17/06 (NA), 11/24/06 (JP), 3/29/07 (AU)
Developers: Sonic Team
The Ancient Story of Who Cares
Story: So for a racing game, there’s a story. And split in 2 parts. There’s the heroes side and the dark side (kind of like Sonic Adventure 2).
Heroes: While looking for the Chaos Emeralds once again, 3 mysterious villains steal them (yet again), and fly off. The next day, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles notice that Eggman is holding a world grand prix and decides to enter the race to get the emeralds back.
Babylon: Wave, Storm and Jet are visited by Eggman and tells them about the race and tells them that if they win the races, they’ll get the rest of the emeralds.
Good Lord, Slippery Controls!
Gameplay: This game’s controlling is horrendous.
So it’s a racing game. On hoverboards. But for some reason, the controlling is very slippery.
So at the beginning of a race, there is a countdown. You have to back up and run as the timer goes off. If you don’t, you get electrocuted. While racing, you may notice that the controls can be hella slippery. And when you make a jump, you have to twist the analog stick to do some “tricks” and land it correctly. This ain’t no Tony Hawk game!
The other thing that kind of ticks me off about this game is the gauge boost. tHE GAUGE BOOST. It’s like gas, but just redundant. It helps you speed up and make tight turns, but once it runs out, you have to find the closest little station to get your energy back to ride again. Also, you can “level” up as the race goes on. By collecting rings. And when you boost, you can hurt the others on the track.
Making tight turns is a blast (not really). You hold down the R1 button and turn the analog stick. But here’s the thing. The R1 button is also the breaks. So sometimes your character may come to a stop. And that just gets annoying. It’s also hard just to steer in general. Everything about this games controlling is just terrible.
Good Lord, What Happened Here
Graphics: I have no idea what happened here.
The only good thing about the graphics is the opening cutscene. It’s all in an anime style and it looks very good. But then you get to the actual game and...it just looks almost awful. The characters arms look big, the mouths look weird when they talk, it’s just awkward. It’s not pleasing to look at.
Somewhat Jammable
Music: The music here is pretty catchy. Let’s face it, most Sonic games have good music.
Music is composed by Tomonori Sawada, Kenichi and Tokoi Fumie Kumatani.
A Good Racing Game?
Overall: No.
This game is pretty bad. It’s barely likeable. It’s not a whole lot of fun. It just comes to a complete stop.
2/5

Nice review. However I will say that I disagree.
I really liked the game and I think the controls weren't that bad.
Could be just me though. The controls on Zero Gravity were worse but that made the game challenging.
That and THE FREAKING GAUGE. That thing has made me lose so many freaking times. Just uuurgh.
