Chickaroo Reviews - The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy (PS2)

Post by chickaroo1 »

One of the greatest Cartoon Network shows of the early 2000's got granted a video game! But is it worth it? Game: The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy
Systems: PlayStation 2, GameCube, Nintendo Wii, Game Boy Advance
Release Dates: PS2 / GC: 9/25/06 (NA)
GBA: 10/16/06 (NA)
Wii: 11/16/06 (NA), 3/16/07 (EU), 3/15/07 (AUS)
Developers: High Voltage Software
Damn Kids
Story: Today’s adventure involves Grim’s Mojo Balls getting loose somehow and now they’re running amuck in Endsville, causing people to breakout in endless rage and fights. And now it is up to the gang to go around town and look for the mojo balls and find out who let them loose.
Do You Dare to Pick a Fight With Death and Friends?
Gameplay: The gameplay is heavily based on the Power Stone series. So in this case, it’s a fighting game. Pick a character to play as during a story mode or just play a classic round of arcade fighting with computer players or friends. There are a few characters to start out with at the start. And as you go on in the story mode, you can unlock more characters and challenges to do.
The core gameplay is just a straight-up fighting game. There are weapons to use and such. There are power-ups and ham to use in battle (ham is the health in this game.) Once a person’s health is low, you get to finish them off with a bit of some quick time event buttons and off they go.
There are a few challenges to do in the game as well if you don’t want to do the story mode. Challenges let you do different tasks and unlock various stuff such as concept art of the show and trailers.
Literally, it’s just a fighting game. There’s not a whole lot to it.
Oh the Cel-Shadedness
Graphics: Since the game is based off a cartoon, the game is in a cel-shaded art style, just like the show. The models do look weird (being a 2D cartoon and turning it into 3D just looks weird sometimes.) But at least they still have their signature looks.
The Show’s Soundtrack - Literally
Graphics: The music here is actually ripped from the show. I’m serious. If you listen closely and know the show well, you may end up recognizing a few of the tracks that are played in the show. Not bad but no originality.
Can You Beat Death?
Overall: This game is pretty good. It’s not the best game out there, but for fans of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, this is a nice treat. And a nice throwback to the show.
