Chickaroo Reviews - Twisted Metal (PS1)

Post by chickaroo1 »

What started as a launch title for the PlayStation, is now a big franchise with many games. But how did it all start? Get ready to smash your way to the finish!Game: Twisted Metal
Systems: PlayStation, PlayStation Network
Release Dates: PS1: 11/5/95 (NA), 1/16/96 (EU), 11/15/96 (JP)
PSN: 2/23/11 (PAL)
Developers: SingleTrac
Only One Makes It Out
Story: Every year, a man named Calypso who lives under the streets of Los Angeles sends out an email to those selected to compete in his “Twisted Metal” competition that takes place on Christmas Eve in 2005. Whoever wins the competition will be granted a single wish. But who will win the competition? You decide.
The Birth of a New Genre
Gameplay: This game defined the vehicle-combat genre that is known today. There’s a few modes to play through. There is story mode and a mode to compete with friends.
In story mode, you pick a character and compete in the Twisted Metal game. Be the last one standing in the arena. There are many weapons to use as you drive around. Speaking of driving around, it’s pretty bad. You only use the D-pad as the gas, no buttons. Whenever you turn, you come to a stop and have to adjust yourself. It’s pretty frustrating since it’s kind of hard to turn yourself. It also makes it hard to aim weapons at your enemies. I just wish the controls were a bit better. But hey it can be a pretty fun game once you get the hang of it. And I’m sure it’s a fun game with friends.
Oh, The Early Days of 32-Bit
Graphics: Good lord the graphics are early PS1 graphics. From the pixilated explosions to the top of Sweet Tooth’s truck not being able to rotate all the way, it kinda looks bad compared to today’s standards. They’re not terrible, just kind of gross looking. But it doesn’t make it a bad game.
Bring on The Hardcore Rock
Music: The music is pretty much “hardcore” music. Such as rock. It fits very well in the background, though it can be hard to hear over the sound effects during the gameplay. All in all, good soundtrack.
Music is composed by Chuck E. Meyers, Tom Hopkins and Lance Lenhart.
But I Want to See Them Smash and Crash!
Overall: The original Twisted Metal is an alright game, at best. The controls are a bit bothersome and it’s rather short. It can get old and boring pretty fast. But there is no doubt to how popular this game got. It’s now a big franchise as well as giving birth to a new genre of gaming.
