Chickaroo Reviews - Sonic Spinball (Genesis)

Post by chickaroo1 »

Sonic’s popularity was booming in the 90’s, so it’d make sense to have some spin-off titles right? But the question is, are they as good as the main games?Game: Sonic Spinball
Systems: Genesis (Mega Drive), Game Gear, Master System, iOS
Release Dates: Genesis: 11/15/93 (EU), 11/23/93 (NA), 12/10/93 (JP)
Game Gear: August ‘94 (EU), September ‘94 (NA)
Master System: January 1995 (EU)
iOS: 12/16/10 (NA)
Developers: Sega Technical Institute
What Up With the Volcano?
Story: Dr. Robotnik is at it again by using Mt. Mobius as his new hideout and uses the magma and lava to run a machine that makes animals robot slaves. So now it’s up to Sonic to save the day once more.
Clunky Pinball?
Gameplay: The game is pretty much almost like your average pinball game. Sonic is used as the pinball. At the beginning of a level, you can move him around a little bit and make him jump onto the little bumpers. The jump button is used to move both bumpers. Sometimes the impact of the bumpers are either strong or weak. You can move Sonic while he is in a ball, though this can be hard since gravity is a thing.
The concept of pinball here is pretty clunky. The jump button used for the bumpers controls both bumpers. Not only that, but since you’re supposed to collect an emerald that stuck in a barrier. You have to drain the barrier and possibly get the crystal. It’s pretty hard to even get the crystal, hell, even navigating through the pinball area is pretty though too. Which makes the game hard. It’s very clunky and just meh.
Colorful and Pretty
Graphics: The graphics here are pretty great looking on the Genesis. The models are good, and so is the color pallet for the first level looks really nice. All in all, great graphics.
Techno-Jam
Music: The first level music is very memorable lemme tell you. The soundtrack itself is pretty good. It’s memorable and listenable too. A pretty good soundtrack, since the first level theme is reused in later games (such as Sonic Generations and such).
Music is composed by Howard Drossin Brian Coburn and Barry Blum.
A Good Time-Killer?
Overall: Sonic Spinball is an alright game. It’s not very fun. It’s a bit difficult and kind of confusing. It’s also pretty hard to control as well. The music is pretty memorable but that’s all there is to it.
