Chickaroo Reviews - Shantae (GBC)

Post by chickaroo1 »

Meet Shantae, a half-genie girl who uses her hair and magic to battle the evil-doers out there in the world. Join her in this late Game Boy Color game that is considered one of the best in the GBC library.Game: Shantae
Systems: Game Boy Color, 3DS Virtual Console
Release Dates: GBC: 6/2/02 (NA)
3DS: 7/18/13 (World Wide)
Developers: WayForward Technologies
Miss Half-Genie To the Rescue!
Story: Sequin-Land has been shaken up by a gang of pirates lead by Risky Boots. She then steals the town’s relic hunter, Mimic and a prototype steam engine. It’s up to Shantae to rescue Mimic and get back the steam engine and save Sequin-Land!
She Whips Her Hair Back and Forth
Gameplay: The game has been described as a “Metroidvania” game (a cross between Metroid and Castlevania). Shantae can walk, jump, and use her hair to whip enemies. This game is also pretty hard because of it. Her hair whips are not very responsive and you can get hit pretty easily and die easily. Now Shantae can do more than just whip her hair. She can also dance her way into becoming a variety of animals that have many different abilities.
There are also coins to collect and to use at shops for items to heal Shantae along her journey. There are also save rooms to save your progress in the different towns. All in all, there’s not a whole lot to do.
The Last of the Greats
Graphics: This game is considered one of the last games on the GBC. So WayForward gave it their all and made it as pretty looking as they could. And boy did they do a good job! It’s a very good looking game on the console. Very colorful and the animations are very nice.
Dance Away!
Music: This is one very good soundtrack for the system as well! It’s upbeat and sounds very good depending on the environment Shantae is in at the time. I recommend it.
Music is composed by Jake Kaufman.
The Last Great Platformer on the GBC?
Overall: Shantae is an alright game. Because of the game being released late into the GBC’s life, it had a limited run, soon becoming a rare game and a bit of a cult classic, creating many sequels to this date. The game is challenging, yes, but it does have its charm at times.
