Chickaroo Reviews - Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex (PS2)

Post by chickaroo1 »

Crash is back in a new game for the PlayStation 2 and other consoles! But without Naughty Dog on board, is the game any good, or is our favorite bandicoot headed for disaster?Game:Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex
Systems: PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox
Release Dates:PS2: 10/29/01 (NA), 11/23/01 (EU), 12/20/01 (JP)
Xbox: 4/15/02 (NA), 4/26/02 (EU), 10/24/02 (JP)
GC: 9/17/02 (NA), 11/1/02 (EU), 12/4/03 (JP)
Developers: Traveller’s Tale
Cortex is At It Once Again!
Story:In a floating spaceship out in space, Uka Uka is having a meeting with Cortex and other villains to shame them for their past failures. Cortex then tells them that he has come up with a plan for a secret weapon he has been working on. He’s been working on a strong bandicoot that will crush and kill Crash. So now the island where Crash and Coco live on is being threatened by Cortex’s new plan and now it’s up to them to stop him and this new secret plan!
Next Gen: Nothing New Really
Gameplay:The gameplay is rather similar to Crash 3. You start off in a hub-world type of room with 5 sections split off with 5 different levels to each section. There are different types of levels. There are platforming levels, airplane levels, riding levels, and more. Coco gets her own levels as well. After completing the 5 levels in a section, you then get to fight the boss. The boss is Crunch Bandicoot. Most of these fights are easy. Some of them are rage inducing.
Collectible are back. There are the boxes to hit, gems and crystals to collect, time trials to do and much more.
To be honest, this whole game is very similar to Crash 3. Not much is new.
Almost Like an Updated PS1 Game
Graphics: As I said during the gameplay section, the game plays a lot like the previous games. And that also goes with the graphics. Being an early PS2 game, the graphics are...okay. They’re not the very best, but they’re alright. Nothing spectacular.
Pretty Damn Catchy
Music:The music in this game is very catchy. It’s toe tapping and fun to listen to. No matter what kind of level you’re playing through, the music will probably be just as good.
Music is composed by Andy Blythe & Marten Joustra.
Any Good on Next Gen?
Overall:The Wrath of Cortex is an alright game. It’s not the very best game though. It’s rather the same as the previous game (not counting CTR, for that is a spin-off I guess). I guess the developers didn’t know what to do for their new license so they just made a game similar to the last. It’s just an alright game.
