^Well, you don't have to pay to listen, just for unrestricted access. I'm sure that most everything that exists now will stay free, even if there are some small restrictions on what you can do a day based on your fourm 'level' if you will. At least that's what I'd expect. Plus bonus stuff that the Gavvster has or will come up with which will (or might be) cool only for VIPs.
I'd be for this, especially since I don't use the fourms that often, and I make an occasional request when I try to come up with ideas of what to request for The SEGA Jukebox.
One question: will podcasts be only available to VIPs if this goes through?

Beware of your mind as it proves you wrong...
Well, as I've said, these are all preliminary ideas. Some'll make it, some won't.
Might need to reiterate though - VIP won't be taking any features away from registered members. We gave unregistered members the chance to make requests after SEGA sent some listeners our way, so ordinarily they couldn't do that. There's clearly a decision to be made there. VIP is just going to be a little extra on top of the basic service. If you want it, then cool. If not, you'll still be able to do what you're doing now.
I just feel as though we should be giving more back to people who donate money to keep us going, and VIP seems like a good way of doing it. If you decide against it though, we won't do it. Not gonna go ahead with an idea that the majority of members are against.
EDIT - Crippenstation - There's no way of doing that, that I know of. We had toyed with the idea of giving VIPs Podcasts 24 hours early, but I don't think that'll go ahead. If we did do something with Podcasts, it would only be early access. Regular members would still be able to get them as they can now.

What about a way for people to donate a set amount of their choosing?
For example, you could set a default amount of say, £1/2 or something, but those that want to contribute more could donate as much as they can afford or wish to. I think having that amount of choice gives more power to the consumer, although I'm aware that setting up a monthly system with different prices could be difficult.
You could always sell merchandise, and I don't just mean tacky bumper stickers and what have you; could you create shows or podcasts which could be sold, or would there be licensing issues there? Maybe a payment to access certain special downloads.
I think you would need something really unique to sell a monthly subscription, such as extra content. I don't think adding a private forum is much of an incentive, and sometimes it can create cliques in forums; I've seen that before >_>
Or, you could just market it as a way to pay for the servers and service, which I'm sure people would be willing to do anyway. Maybe instead of a subscription, just encourage more people to donate a bit here and there when they can with added incentives, such as competitions or a 'hall of fame' type thing for the biggest contributors. I like to think people are nice enough to want to help out when they can, and not when they're being insulted or pressured by passive-aggressive comments from the people who own the site, which I've also seen before.
These are just some ideas I've thought of, anyway.

Specialist VIP forum = fragmenting the already small community
More radio requests - pointless for me as I never actually listen to it.
Updates - To be brutally honest there's not been many recently, and the only ones that'd really affect me would be forum layout changes.

Oh no, you could do that. We wouldn't lock donations at 1, 3, 6, 9, or 12 month subs. You could still donate £7 or £77 if you wanted, and you'd get the equivalent number of months VIP as a bonus.CapnCloudchaser wrote:What about a way for people to donate a set amount of their choosing?

Yeah, licensing issues there, seeing as we don't own the copyrights to any of the music we play.CapnCloudchaser wrote:You could always sell merchandise, and I don't just mean tacky bumper stickers and what have you; could you create shows or podcasts which could be sold, or would there be licensing issues there? Seems a few people are against the forum idea. When the idea was put forward to me I was a bit skeptical, but I thought I'd raise it just to see what you guys thought. Don't think it'll be feasible to continue along that line of thinking anymore.CapnCloudchaser wrote:I think you would need something really unique to sell a monthly subscription, such as extra content. That is kinda what I'm doing. Subscriptions wouldn't automatically update, so if you wanted to donate £24 and get 12 months VIP, that's what you'd get. I'd probably send you a polite reminder towards the end of the 12 months to remind you that your sub is gonna run out. If you don't fancy renewing, we'll just shift you back down to regular member.CapnCloudchaser wrote:[Y]ou could just market it as a way to pay for the servers and service, which I'm sure people would be willing to do anyway. I don't really want to be pressuring or insulting anybody into doing anything, hence why I've put this idea out in the public domain so long before it's actually implemented. Remember that I actually need full control of RS before I can actually do it

EDIT: Rayne - I'll be looking at updating stuff as and when it needs doing. They won't be few and far between like they have been.
