Oddly enough, yeah. The bots were getting through it, which is a baffling thing to say the least.

Nah, only if they were trying to sell something. The folks you describe are usually either people who signed up to make requests or people who just lost interest in the site.

No, they're not spambots just because they haven't posted much.

As I said on IRC/Twitter, they're probably just old accounts that have been left active on the forum, but they haven't posted yet. On my vBulletin forum, I had a bunch of them just sitting there doing nothing, so I left 'em alone, but on there we've suddenly had a surge of activity from them too.

One way to tell if they are spambots or not when they register is to paste their email address in Google, if they are spambots they'll come up on spam check websites, so you can pre-emptively ban/remove them. If they have a weird username, or put information in their profile in places it probably shouldn't be (Like setting their Gamertag as their country, etc) then that can be a indicator too.
