ShadowPhantom - I believe the most accepted canon in the community is the UK one, in that Dr. Robotnik was once Dr. Ovi Kintobor. He was a jolly fellow, and met a brown Sonic who wanted to become the fastest thing alive.
Experiment went a little wrong, and that's how Sonic became blue. After that, they started experimenting with the Chaos Emeralds. Whilst clearing his fridge out, as it only had rotten eggs in (Kintobor was pretty crap at eating, it seems), Kintobor trips over a wire and smashes into the machine, releasing all the Chaos Energy and turning Kintobor into his exact opposite.
Later comics retconned this a little bit with the revelation that it was a time-travelling Sonic who had held the wire up for Kintobor to trip over, in order to stop Metal Sonic (called Metallix in the comics) from killing him and changing the course of history.
Course, what you believe is completely up to you, but the Fleetway backstory pre-Metallix was a pretty good one to use as canon if you wanted to.

If eggman wanted to kill Sonic why didn't he just leave him on that laser mashine and shoot him while he was transforming, instead of dumping him into space? He knew Sonic would survive, he said that on masuri:Gonic wrote:And eggman is not to soft to kill sonic, ive giving reasons to why this is to. (You know throwing him into space n all?)

And Cutsceen 23, you see at the flash back when he is throwing Sonic that he looks kind of scared. Ofcaurse it's because of him caring about the emeralds but he also wants to know what will happen to Sonic:
