Was surprised they decided to use McGann for a prequel tying everything together. Didn't like it that much but was nice to see some continuity.

I get the impression that McGann wanted to be a part of the 50th in some way, but Moffat wanted to keep the special itself limited to post reboot Doctors. As such they gave him a role in the prequel.
