I'm going off topic slightly here, but at least that was a creative idea and in this day and age I would never criticise a publisher for being creative. Sonic fans are hard to please because they're all in denial.
You see, Sonic games are shit. Sonic's core concepts age about as well as milk left by a radiator. What was mind blowing in 93 isn't the same now. Even if they made a game that was on par with Sonic 2 it's only keep me amused for about 20 minutes.
Mario on the other hand has managed to continue to evolve with each iteration, always bringing new things that expand the gameplay but not totally change it.
