SotN is Castlevania the same way Metroid Prime IS Metroid, all the Final Fantasies ARE Final Fantasy and such. They take core principles and change/expand some. SotN has similar level design, albeit on a larger scale. It also has similar if superior controls. The aesthetics, story and basic gameplay mechanics fit in with the series. If Castlevania was the Terminator, SotN was T2. Metroid Prime still had open map exploration, upgrades etc, but in a third dimension. In many ways it was identical to clasic Metroid gameplay.

Now, Monster World III. Is that really Wonder Boy?
Not totally teetotal.

Which is exactly what I was getting at. Whatever reason people dislike Lords of Shadow, hating it for "not being Castlevania" is stupid. Even more so since it's probably the franchises future now!

In all fairness, it's definitely the least Castlevania-y game, from design, to gameplay, to plot.

Wouldn't have minded if it played okay, but the masks and the bad guys still don't fit at all.

The least? Sure, it definitely does its own thing for better or worse, but it still has elements that say "yea, this is Castlevania" like subweapons.

I think, the change in art design is certainly refreshing, and not as offensively bad as the DS game (until Ecclesia). The only thing I don't like is the plot, which in itself is not out there for a Castlevania, but it just takes itself way too serious.

I'm buying Ecclesia in a week, so expect me to disagree with that point in a week and nine hours.

I don't think you'd need to play it. Ecclesia has awesome Kojima art like previous games, the other 2 DS games have that awful anime art.

Are you saying Metroid had no enemies? I must have forgot all those aliens I had to keep shooting to clear out a corridor.

Clearly.

Also I guess I shouldn't complain too much about Portait of Ruin and Dawn of Sorrow's art design. They're nowhere near as bad as the best game, Rondo of Blood's, original art.
