Skies Of Arcadia was without a doubt the best RPG that Sega have ever been responsible for, although I will say Shenmue was the most adventurous and really was groundbreaking for me as a player.
I've actually been trying to play some of the Mega Drive Phanstaystar's and I can see their charm, in a way I wish I could play these games in the same wide eyed way I played SOA.
also a quick shout out for the Yakuza games as they kick ass literally

Ok I can see your angle on that one, but when I think of adventure I think lara/drake not ryo. Y'know the old 'flick the switch to open the door, shoot that thing in the head' style game. I guess if we get down to the conventions of a RPG the only thing Shenmue has going for it is grinding in the car park. Its still an RPG in my heart though.

I guess, although they had 'point and click' thrown onto the front of them. By the same notion I think the lara/drake/Prince of Persia are 'action adventure'
I could go with adventure for Shenmue as its so free form in its story telling and by all intensive purposes a complete and utter adventure in the truest sense of the word.
Lets call it a 'sailor finding adventure'
