You could also turn it into a puzzle game, like Portal.

Oh man, I remember Portal. I got stuck in it and gave up. :X
You know why I dislike FPS games so much? It's because of the focus on multiplayer.
I've never been much of a mutliplayer person, since I'm not very social.
Co-op is fine, as long as it's with my brother, as we make a great team.

For the big two (CoD and Battlefield) that's certainly true, but there are plenty of FPS games with great singeplayer. And the genre is definitely not more MP focused than fighting games. Which, outside of Mortal Kombat 9, barely have any good singleplayer content.

A good example of a good single player FPS would be Deus Ex, right?

It's an okay example, not a really a traditional shooter though. A better example would be Bulletstorm or Goldeneye both of which came out last year (okay Goldeneye was an up port of a Wii game that came out in 2010 but whatevs) and are more traditional shooty games.

I'd go with Unreal, personally. That game took me about a month to finish.
Most FPS games only take about a week to finish, or a day if they're really short.
I love how this thread has turned into a discussion about FPS games.

Duke Nukem was also a rather good traditional Shoot-em-all FPS game.
That along with Serious Sam 3.
