It's actually a series I've been curious about for awhile, as well as the tennis.
No idea. I've never played Mario Golf. I bought EG after trying the multiplayer at a mate's house and loving it. It can be simple and fun enough for people - like me - who have no interest in golf to enjoy it, while at the same time it can be deep enough for more experienced golf fans to enjoy it.

Mario Golf on the GameCube was a lot of fun, but it can be incredibly annoying too. I've also played We Love Golf! on the Wii, which was alright but... I never unlocked Jill Valentine, grr!
I don't have much interest in golf either (or most sports for that matter) but some games seem to make it fun. Especially if it's colourful and doesn't take itself too seriously.

I am currently playing... Golden Axe II, on that Mega Drive collection I have.
I don't like it that much (prefer III personally) but I'm just trying to get a trophy.
