Chickaroo Reviews - Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers (3DS)

Post by chickaroo1 »

Teenagers who are in a group known as the Spookies keep everything in check as they hunt demons down in this pretty cool classic JRPG!Game: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
Systems: Sega Saturn, PlayStation, Nintendo 3DS
Release Dates: Saturn: 11/13/97 (JP)
PS1: 4/8/99 (JP)
3DS: 8/30/12 (JP), 4/16/13 (NA), 9/20/13 (EU)
Developers: Atlus
They’re Gonna Hack You Down!
Story: In Amami City, the main character belongs in a group called the Spookies, who are a bunch of amature hackers. They use the beta version of a popular virtual game called Paradigm X to go on visual quests and find out what’s going on throughout the virtual world and the real world. And now he’s out to find the true secrets behind the mysterious Paradigm X.
One Cool Cyberpunk JRPG
Gameplay: The gameplay is pretty neat and very “90’s”. Which makes sense because this was originally a Sega Saturn game. When walking around the city, you are represented by a dot and can move around the path. Some areas will be available as you go through the game.
While in dungeons, you are in a first person view. Walking around is pretty stiff a little bit, but you can get used to it easily. Also with walking around, be prepared for random battle encounters! Woo.
In battle, you pick your actions for you and your friend, be it using a sword, a gun, an item or summoning a demon. Demons act almost like personas in the Persona series. You can fight the demons or talk to them, in hopes to that demon joining your party and using them in battle.
Knowing Atlus / Shin Megami Tensei games, they can be pretty difficult as it goes on. And the same goes for this game. You will have to grind a lot. And you better be pretty good at these old school JRPGs and get the hang of it.
With the 3DS remake, there’s a few new additions. By using StreetPass and StreetPass Coins, you can buy demons using the Nemechi System. Nemichi’s a cute little demon that you can buy demons from and level him/her up to get higher leveled demons.
Mid-90’s Madness
Graphics: This game to this day still looks pretty good. It shows its age with it’s character models and gameplay too. They look a better than the Saturn / PlayStation ports. It still looks like an older game, but I think that’s pretty cool.
Rockin’ Out
Music: The music is pretty okay. It sounds like generic rock music but it can be quite memorable since they repeat a lot. Some of it is good, some of it is alright. They’re a joy to listen to.
Music is composed by Shōji Meguro, Toshiko Tasaki, and Tsukasa Masuko.
Do You Wish To Hack Your Soul?
Overall: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers is a pretty good JRPG. It does take patience to get used to the old-school gameplay and that the game can be pretty difficult and will take lots of grinding. But it’s nice to play a game that took almost 20 years to get over here. And it’s a nice addition to the Atlus gaming library.

I remember playing this one, a bit challenging from the start. But it definitely gets more rewarding as you go on. Its a nice mix that anyone can pick up and play too which is nice. =D

Starting to fall in love with Atlus now. This would definitely be a game I would be interested in getting my hands on.
