Chickaroo Reviews - New Super Mario Bros. (DS)

Post by chickaroo1 »

Mario has returned back to his roots as a 2D platformer. But is it a good game, or just the same game but with a shiny new coat?Game: New Super Mario Bros.
Systems: Nintendo DS
Release Dates: 5/15/06 (US), 5/17/06 (CA), 5/25/06 (JP), 6/8/06 (AUS), 6/30/06 (EU), 3/8/07 (KOR), 7/6/09 (CN)
Developers: Nintendo EAD Group No. 4
Princess Peach Kidnapped Once Again
Story: And just like every other Super Mario game, Princess Peach is yet again, kidnapped by Bowser and his son Bowser Jr. And now Mario must rescue his girlfriend yet again and save the Mushroom Kingdom. That castle needs better security, lemme tell ya.
Hey, What Else is n- Oh Wait
Gameplay: The gameplay is a lot like the previous Super Mario games. You play as Mario as you run around in a 2D side-scrolling way while the models are in 3D, giving it a 2.5D look. The premise is pretty much the same as the other games, get to the end of the level. But now there are new things to do as you run through the levels. There are 3 different star coins to collect throughout the levels. You can use the coins to go to a house on the map to get extra power-ups. The bottom screen as you run around can be used to see where you are in the level and as well as hold 1 power up to use if you can’t find one.
There are a total of 8 worlds and many levels for each world. And as always, there is a boss at the end of every level to beat to move on.
Now there is more to do besides the main game. There’ a “Mario & Luigi” multiplayer mode where you and a friend can play against each other to get the most star coins. There is also a mini-game mode as well. And oh man, the mini-games are really addicting and really fun! There are card games, matching games, puzzle games, and so much more. These are a lot of fun to play and to pass the time by.
Colorful As Always
Graphics: As mentioned before, the game is in a 2.5D perspective. The models are in 3D and the world is in a 2D perspective. It’s a nice, new and updated look to the old 2D looks of the other worlds. Some of them are heavily inspired by the previous games, so it will give off a familiar look.
Hey This Sounds Really Familiar
Music: The music here is just..kind of lazy. It’s a more “modern” take on the original songs yeah but, we’ve heard it all so many times. It just feels like it doesn’t have a soul.
Music is composed by Asuka Ohta, Hajime Wakai and Koji Kondo.
A Run Down Familiar Lane
Overall: New Super Mario Bros. is an alright game. It’s solid and is pretty fun. But after a while, the formula can get a little old. But the mini-games and the multiplayer are really fun. I spent countless hours on the mini-games as a little girl and as well as battling my babysitter in the multiplayer for hours. All in all, fun for everyone.

This is probably the first time I've ever seen the first New Super Mario Bros. described as anything other than an ugly souless husk with terrible music and boring levels.
