To be fair, you play a role in most games: In Uncharted you play the role of Nathan Drake, in Street Fighter you play the role of whoever you picked on the character select screen, in Microsoft Flight Simulator you play the role of a pilot and in Shenmue you play the role of Ryo, however, it doesn't mean it's an RPG.

It's just like the whole Zelda is an RPG thing.

Please dont tell me Zelda isnt a RPG... its the first RPG I ever played and if its not i'm lost...

In all seriousness what exactly counts as a RPG? As far as role playing goes that is essentially gaming in general, but there has to be line. I would consider the mass effect games to be RPG's through and through mostly because of the focus on character and story, but I may have just described the Halo games too...

The core of an RPG is the character customization and progression.

The best way to define it is to probably look at something like Wizardry which started the JRPG genre.

They usually involve player levels, differing skill types, separate battle sequences from the main exploration, often an over-world with dungeons and towns, etc.

Edit: This probably explains it better:

For what it's worth Mass Effect is an RPG though Mass Effect 2 barely passes as one.

That explains JRPG's well.

As far as western RPG's go they are obviously direct descendants of the table top, 10 sided die style games. So I guess you guys are right, RPG's are all about the stats. Which I guess Zelda isnt. Done.

And yes ME2 barely makes it as an RPG

You need to know what the difference between a wizard and a mage is to play an RPG. I don't.

See, I always counted Zelda as an RPG. It has RPG elements, such as buying/selling in towns, interacting with people, etc.
