That's a toughie...
Instant death would leave behind bad memories and traumatise loved ones.
Eternal life would be very painful to get used to, since you'll see everyone you've ever known age and die, while you still stay the same. Eternal life might make one apathetic.
Both cases, the bad outweighs the good. Instant death would relieve you of pain instantly, while pain in eternal life would slowly subside over time. (If only there was a third option...)
I'll choose eternal life. Time heals all wounds, as they say.
