Chickaroo Reviews: Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (PS1)

Post by chickaroo1 »

As the purple dragon landed and breathed life into the PlayStation, people everywhere knew that there had to be more to Spyro's adventures. And one year later, he's back!

Game: Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! / Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer
Systems: PlayStation 1, PlayStation Network
Release Dates: PS1: 10/31/99 (NA), 11/05/99 (EU), 3/16/00 (JP)
PSN: 4/17/08 (JP), 5/07/08 (NA), 12/12/12 (PAL)
Developers: Insomniac Games

In The World of Dragons...Again
Story: Taking place after the ending of the first game, Spyro and Sparx are tired of the endless raining. So they decide to take a vacation to Dragon Shores. But as they enter the portal, they end up in the world of Avalar. It turns out that Spyro and Sparx were practically summoned to Avalar by a mole named the Professor, a fawn named Elora and a cheetah named Hunter. These folks are having a problem in Avalar. It has been invaded by an evil enemy named Ripto, who wishes to rule over Avalar (and hates dragons and wishes to get rid of them). So now it's up to Spyro to save Avalar and stop Ripto.

Improvements, Nice Improvements
Gameplay: The gameplay is somewhat the same, but with some improvements. The charge and flaming ability is stronger and better. And now Spyro can swim, climb and head bash. BUT - here's the catch - you have to pay for it. There's a character named Moneybags and he will ask you to pay a "small fee" (aka a few hundred gems) and then you could get the move. He will aslo block some paths so therefore you have to pay him.
Collectibles are back like gems. The new collectibles in each level are called Talismans. There are 14 talismans in total.
As well as orbs to collect. An orb is earned if you complete a task or you simply find one.
There are 3 home worlds: Summer Forest, Autumn Plains and Winter Tundra.

Cleaner and Brighter
Graphics: The graphics are even better than ever. Spyro looks like her got bigger as if he grew up. His wings and horns are bigger. All the models and areas look good.

Drum it Up
Music: The music is pretty good. From mysterious aquatic sounds in water based levels, the beautiful sounds in the hub worlds. Like the cold sounds of Winter Tundra, or the warm sound of Summer Forest. It's good.
Music is composed by Stewart Copeland.

A Great Squeal?
Overall: This is a great squeal. It improved on so many things. The story is good. The characters are loveable. It's a great game. Go play it.
