Chickaroo Reviews - Sonic Adventure (GC / PS3)

Post by chickaroo1 »

It’s Sonic the Hedgehog’s first 3D debut! (And no, 3D Blast does not count.) Will the first 3D game in the series be successful?
Game: Sonic Adventure
Systems: DreamCast, Nintendo GameCube, Windows, Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network
Release Dates: DC: 12/23/98 (JP), 9/9/99 (NA), 10/14/99 (EU), 12/1/99 (AUS)
GC: 6/18/03 (NA), 6/19/03 (JP), 6/27/03 (PAL)
Windows: 12/18/03 (JP), 2/6/04 (PAL), 9/14/04 (NA), 3/4/11 (World Wide)
Xbox Live Arcade: 9/15/10 (NA + PAL), 9/29/10 (JP)
PSN: 9/20/10 (NA), 9/22/10 (EU), 9/29/10 (JP)
Developers: Sonic Team
Chaos, Chaos Everywhere
Story: This story is...hard to explain almost but I’ll give it a shot.
Our story takes place in a town called Station Square. An evil being named Chaos is out on the loose. Sonic notices the creature and heads after it. He meets up with Tails, and the two discover that Dr. Robotnik (nicknamed “Eggman” here *Hint Hint*) is the one behind using Chaos. He tells our heroes that the more chaos emeralds Chaos absorbs, the more Chaos will grow and be more destructive. And now it’s up to Sonic, Tails and all kinds of other characters to stop Robotnik.
Hedgehogs and Foxes and Robots, Oh My!
Gameplay: There are up to five playable characters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, E102-Gamma, and Big the Cat.
Sonic: As you would expect, he is the fastest of the bunch. He can do a spin dash, a homing attack and more. He also has the most levels.
Tails: He has the ability to fly for a pretty long time. He does have a tail spin to attack enemies. His levels involve racing to the end of the level.
Knuckles: His levels involve finding pieces of the master emerald, 3 per level.
Amy: She can be a bit slow but she has a hammer attack as well as she can bounce with it.
Gamma: His levels involve shooting things. The shooting in these levels are pretty well done.
Big: Oh boy. Big’s levels involve fishing...yeah. Think SEGA Bass Fishing but worse. You have to fish Froggy out every time and it’s just annoying.
Besides the characters and levels, there is a hub world. There are three to be exact - Station Square, Mystic Ruins and Eggman’s Ship. Here is where the character can get to a level or trigger an event. For the most part, they’re okay, but it can be hard to find the area you need to be in or where to go exactly.
When a character completes a stage, they’re rewarded with a emblem. You can earn more emblems by going back to a stage and completing the objective or by exploring the hub worlds. Collect all of them and you can unlock secret Game Gear games.
Controls for the most part are pretty okay. They’re a bit slow and a tiny bit clunky.
Where to Start…
Graphics: Hehe here comes the fun part.
So it’s 1999 right? And the lip syncing is...pretty terrible to be honest with you. Now games in the 90’s didn’t have much good lip syncing but here, it was pretty bad. As for the rest of the rest of the graphics, they’re okay...not the best. Since this is sort of an enhanced version of the original DreamCast game after all. The character models look very shiny, it’s a little better looking but some textures were either altered or removed from the original (Twinkle Park is a prime example of this). But it’s pretty okay.
Up and Down and All Around
Music: Ohhh man. This game’s soundtrack.
It’s a very enjoyable soundtrack here. There’s all kinds of tracks varying all kinds of genres. From rock to jazz to peaceful, it’s all here folks. From the opening theme song “Open Your Heart” by Crush 40 to the fun beat of Speed Highway, I’m sure you’ll find a favorite track.
Music is composed by Jun Senoue, Kenichi Tokoi, Fumie Kumatani and Masaru Setsumaru.
Is Sonic’s First 3D Adventure The Best One Yet?
Overall: To answer that question...eh, kind of. It’s certainly not the best in the series no no. But it was kind of revolutionary at the time. It still holds up well today. Story wise, it’s okay and having five characters to play as is a little too much in my opinion. But all in all, Sonic Adventure is an okay game. Not the best, but simply not the worst.
3 / 5
