I'd say Reknoc makes a valid point there. Not being able to afford something doesn't give you the right to steal it. I can't afford a Ferrari, in your eyes does that mean I have the right to go out and take one I see in the street? How about a nice big flatscreen telly? If I pop out to the electrical shop and tell the staff "Look, I can't afford this, so I'm just going to take it." At the best they'll just laugh me out of the shop, at worst I'll end up with a jail sentance.

First off, I never said it did, so don't set me up like I have. Second of all -and i'm tired of repeating myself- that wasn't the issue to begin with, so i'm still not going to answer to that comparison. straw man.
It's one thing to call someone else's reasoning flimsy, but it's another to call it flimsy in a thread that says this-
CapnCloudchaser wrote:No judgements here: what are your views on piracy?
Then come off like it's okay because they don't respect anyone who pirates -just because they pirate. AND coming from someone who's done it as well.

We're not here to say who's reasons are better or worse than who's because if you're going to go that route, then we've all stolen something*, regardless of the reason for it.
Seriously, it's not that hard to make your say on something without taking a potshot at someone else and making it seem like thier reasons are completely invalid and ours somehow acceptable by comparison -because they're not.

*(When I say by "we all", i'm referring to those who've said they have in this thread, for whatever reason.)

..But if that's what this thread's going to devolve into then forget it. I refuse to waste any more of my time here, as intresting as the subject may be.

My eyes and the eyes of the world, the world where all the laws are.
R.C Toi wrote:But again, the point of the thread was for people to throw in thier two bucks and not be judged for it, and whether or not you personally care about treating others fairly based solely on whether or not they're pirated something (which you've done, yourself) Is... well.. Pretty hypocritcal.Soooo....? Again I repeat. Not okay. Not in a thread that says not to.
So? I don't see any problem in looking at the reasoning and saying why it's wrong.

Yes I did it, but at least I had the decency to know I was wrong about it and hate myself for doing it. Hell I downloaded Bungie's Oni a few months a go but I didn't even bother installing it and just deleted it.

Sorry, but could you explain what that means?

And i think she means that this isn't the place for that type of thing.
This is a thread to find out what you think of it, not judge the people who do it. No one will voice their opinion if people are going to slam on it.
You can make a seperate thread for that, ok?

I wasn't judging anyone R.C, I was just pointing out the logic of people who do use the "Oh but I can't afford it!" excuse to pirate software. Relax a little, no-one's out to attack you.

My views on piracy?
A pirated game is not like "stealing a bigger TV". Piracy is a missed potential sale.
From the publishers stand point second hand games make them grit their teeth as much as piracy and we've seen them try to combat second hand sales with "unlockables" that you get with a one time code with the game.

When I was young and didn't have work I pirated a lot of stuff, then I started buying more originals when I had an income.

Honestly looking at my game library I've not been a good customer for developers. While I probably own over 550 games I think I've only bought about 150 games "new" from stores. While a lot of those have been steam ones (hurrah says the publishers as the only way I can sell those is to sell the steam account wich is probably an EULA breach). A lot of my original ps3 and ps3 that where bought on release dates where paid with trade ins (which I bought second hand or on sale for just this purpose) and now the store has three more second hand games to sell for that one game that the publisher got paid for.
Paying for one new game and pirating the rest would really be the same in the publishers eye.

Nintendo had adds in their official gaming mag that said that it was illegal to buy/sell second hand games (of course it wasn't) back in the days and now, well according to the companies. While you own the disc you don't own the contents of it, just a licence to use it.

Publishers also hate me for being a wanker and paying through my nose for Japanese import titles since they don't ge the cash (different publisher in Europe from Japan for example).

Writing this from memory so I might have some facts wrong.

Second hand and import games don't reduce the percieved value of the product. Pirating games means people are often not prepared to pay full price for the real thing if they are used volumes of it for free. People say they buy the ones they like, but they are often special editions and that, not the meat and potatoes chart releases that keep the industyry going. It's already happened with CD sales in music, and in other cultures such as China people are simply not prepared to buy the genuine copy of anything, DVDs, films, music or games. This is the bigger threat to the industry as games can't fall back on concert/cinema sales or whatever.

There is truth to this, remember being a wee kid buggering your parents about buying that nes game that you wanted? Then when you got it it sucked so hard.

Pirating has definitely raised the bar for the quality requierd for me to buy a game. Then again, so has demos and online reviews etc. I'm more inclined to buy an average game that can be fun if it is cheaper.

Then there are great games that they release for like £20 which makes me puzzled. Take Valkyria Chronicles for example. Great game, from what I've gathered quite popular in Japan, they release it here for £20.
I already had the limited edition Japanese version but I still bought it because it was cheap.

Try before you buy, I've got no moral objections to downloading a game for free and having a go. I've always been a collector so if a game is good I'll pick it up at some point.

Piracy doesn't pay off in the end either, it's easy to amass hundreds of games for nothing but you don't appriciate them. You end up dipping and diving between games without ever really playing any of them. I've got a -friend who has- the entire SNES & Mega Drive libraries on this softmodded Xbox and -he- struggles to find the incentive to play through them.

Oh, and if it's digital download only everone should pirate the fuck out of it, paying for a product you never technically own is just stupid (I've supported all different forms but I would never purchase a full price title on DD)
