Because Sonic 06 didn't just have an awful story it had an awful story told through cutscenes that got in the way of gameplay. Most people would rather have a simple story that's there for nothing more than to give a quick and simple reason for the game than to have some horrible abomination.

Story just isn't that important when it comes to games, platformers especially.

Edit: And people didn't just condemn it for it's terrible story that was just another notch against it after they complained about everything else.

OK, I guess a human and a animal was kind of weird.
Well who knows, maybe in another few decades, some people might agree with me and say that Mario saving Princess Peach from Bowser is kind of getting boring.
But I guess if everybody is OK with that, than I am fine I guess.

The gameplay will always be more important than the story, but that doesn't mean the story cannot be good quality either; it just comes second.

Mario is 25 years old, if they aren't thinking it now they aren't going to think it at all.

I'm willing to save Princess Peach countless more times than being interested in a story in a sonic game

I think there's more to Mario than meets the eye. She's always baked him a cake, and Bowser kidnaps her because he wants a piece of her cake, so Mario goes and rescues her so he can have it.

Cake. Metaphor much?

Anyway, back on topic please. This is getting silly.

Well, hasn't she always tried to bake him a cake since Mario 64?

No. And there were a bunch of Marios before Mario 64.
