Chickaroo Reviews: The Spongebob Squarepants Moive: The Game (PS2)

Post by chickaroo1 »

With every kids movie, there's a video game adaptation. And this time, it's pretty decent and fun! Now just one question...are you a Goofy Goober?

Game:The Spongebob Squarepants Movie: The Game
Systems: Windows, Playstation 2, Xbox, GameCube, Game Boy Advance
Release Dates: Windows: 10/27/04 (NA and EU)
GBA, GC, PS2, Xbox: 10/27/04 (NA), 2/18/05 (PAL)
Developers: Heavy Iron Studios

Same as the Movie
Story: In case you haven't seen The Spongebob Squarepants Movie, the game's story literally follows the movie's plot.
So it's the grand opening of The Krusty Krab 2 (Don't ask why there's a second Krusty Krab). And Spongebob is hoping to become the manager. Once he gets to the opening ceremony, he discovers that he didn't get the position. And so, he and Patrick head off to the Goofy Goober ice cream party pub to drown their sorrows in ice cream.
Meanwhile, jealous of Mr. Krab's success, archrival Plankton seeks revenge against Mr. Krab and the Krusty Krabe success. So what does he do? Steals the crown of King Neptune himself and makes it look like Mr. Krabs did it.
The next morning, Spongebob wakes up with a hangover and heads to work to talk to Mr. Krabs. Once he arrives, King Neptune arrives and freezes Mr. Krabs for his "crime." Now it's up to Spongebob and Patrick to save Mr. Krabs and Bikini Bottom from the wrath of Plankton.

Very Fun, Who Knew?
Gameplay: The game is a platformer and plays a lot like Battle for Bikini Bottom (which was released the previous year.) Players can play as Spongebob or Patrick, each with their own abilities. They both can jump and punch and have different moves.
Levels are fun and pretty detailed, following the locations in the movie somewhat. Besides the main levels, there are some mini game-ish levels. There’s some involving the patty wagon where you either have to reach the end while going through rings or collecting keys while driving. During main levels, you may find a mat on the ground with either two different challenges: Spongeball / Floating Block challenge or Combat Arena. Combat Arena is where you fight 3 waves of enemies. Spongeball is where Spongebob turns into a ball and you roll him around a maze and try to get to the end. Floating Block is what it sounds like. There are complex blocks that you must get through.
Instead of golden spatulas to collect in Battle for Bikini Bottom, they are now Goofy Goober tokens. Money wise, there’s dumbbells to collect. Once you collect a certain amount, you can upgrade one of either Spongebob or Patrick’s moves.

Same as Ever, Still Looks Good
Graphics: Models from Battle from Bikini Bottom are back, and they still look good. The colors are bright, the design is decent. I say it’s pretty good for a non cel-shaded game based on a cartoon.

Snazzy
Music: The music here is pretty upbeat and catchy. It fits the tone of the cartoon very well. (Which I enjoy a lot.) Some tracks sound weird while some are pure ear candy. It’s a nice soundtrack.

Are You a Goofy Goober?
Overall: This game is pretty fun and mostly nostalgic to those who remember Spongebob during it's golden era. The movie itself is pretty good. The game is fantastic and I love it to this day. Give it a shot.

Score: 4/5
