Chickaroo Reviews - Tomb Raider: Underworld (PS3)

Post by chickaroo1 »

The story continues! And this time, Lara is in search for her mother. But is this game worth it before the reboot happens in 2013?Game: Tomb Raider: Underworld
Systems: Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, N-Gage 2.0, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Wii, Xbox 360
Release Dates: 11/18/08 (NA), 11/21/08 (EU), 12/5/08 (AUS)
PS2: 1/23/09 (NA), 3/3/09 (EU)
Developers: Crystal Dynamics
Still Alive Somewhere
Story: Picking up where Legend left off, Lara’s mother is still alive and now she’s in the Norse underworld, Helheim. In order to enter there however, Lara needs to obtain Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. Now Lara is running around the globe in search of the hammer and discovers connections to many underworld cultures.
If It Ain’t Broke, DON’T Fix It!
Gameplay: The gameplay is pretty similar to Legend / Anniversary kind of. Somewhat. The buttons for shooting her weapons has been moved to the R2 button instead, throwing some people off. Also, Lara is able to sprint again like she did in Tomb Raider III.
The thing that’s a lot different this time around is how Lara moves. This is the first Tomb Raider game to use motion capture. And for some reason, it makes Lara look like a bit of a spaz when she jumps from ledge to ledge. In the previous games, they looked smooth, but here, not so much.
Another thing that’s bothersome is the camera. That freaking camera. It gets stuck, it spazzes a lot, it’s just annoying.
Also, the combat is a little redundant. It’s hard to get space between Lara and the enemies. And there isn’t much of it.
Such Beauty
Graphics: Lara’s model in the game is similar to the Legend model, but with a little bit more detail. Even the environments are really nice. Very, very detailed and beautiful. Lara also has many outfits to choose from in almost each level.
Kinda Empty
Music: It’s interesting since this time around, there isn’t much music. Almost a bit of a throwback to the early days.
Music is composed by Troels Brun Folmann and Colin O'Malley.
A Good End to the Trilogy?
Overall: Not exactly. It’s a pretty okay game in my standards. It’s not as terrible as Angel of Darkness oh hell no. But it’s just that this game can get a little boring. I don’t know. Just not a huge fan of this game.
