Chickaroo Reviews - Spyro: A Hero's Tail (PS2)

Post by chickaroo1 »

After the failure of Enter the Dragonfly, fans didn't know where the series was headed next. And this game surprised people.
Game: Spyro: A Hero’s Tail
Systems: PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube
Release Dates: 11/3/04 (NA), 11/9/04 (AUS, PS2 only), 11/12/04 (EU), 11/26/04 (EU, GameCube)
Developers: Eurocom / Traveler's Tales
The Dragon Has Returned!
Story:The Dragon Realm has been at peace for a long time. That is up until a mysterious dragon named Red sticks these Dark Gems in the ground to drain the energy out of the world. And he has Gnasty Gnorc (the villain from the first game, somehow he didn't die) to have his army of gnorcs to do Red’s work and put the Dark Gems around the world and trap the Elder Dragons. And now it’s up to our purple dragon hero to save the day once again!
Reverse, Reverse
Gameplay: The gameplay is similar to the original PlayStation games but with a twist. For those familiar with the controls, get ready for some switch up. In the original games, Square is to charge and Circle is to flame. But in A Hero’s Tail, it’s Square to flame and Circle to charge. It can be confusing at first.
There are many collectibles to collect here. The dragon eggs make a return from Spyro 3 as they are hidden throughout the worlds or are rewards for certain tasks. There are also light gems to collect as well. Dark Gems are hidden throughout the world and you have to headbutt them or charge through them to heal the world’s wounds.
There are other characters that are playable too. Hunter, Sgt. Byrd and Sparx make a comeback as playable characters along with newcomer Blink the Mole. Hunter now carries around a bow and arrow, Sgt. Byrd’s levels consist of blowing up a certain amount of items (similar to the bonus levels in the original PlayStation games). Blink’s levels involve him in an underground digging way and Sparx’s levels are rail shooting.
Also, gems in the game are just currency, they’re not required to beat the game unlike the last few games.
A Lot Nicer
Graphics: Well comparing the graphics to the last game, Enter the Dragonfly, it’s a lot better. It’s colorful, cartoony, and pretty detailed. They look really nice on the PS2.
Very Relaxing
Music: I adore this game’s soundtrack. It’s really upbeat and relaxing, especially Dragonfly Falls. That song is just amazing and can put you at ease.
Music is composed by Steve Duckworth.
Can His Wings Still Fly?
Overall: Spyro: A Hero’s Tail is a big improvement from Enter the Dragonfly but still has a few flaws. The controls are swapped and a little weird (and at times, unforgiving). The gameplay can be a little stale at times too. It passes off as an okay game. Not the best, but it’s okay.
