Chickaroo Reviews - Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS)

Post by chickaroo1 »

The Year of Luigi continues! This time, a sequel to the original launch title on the GameCube. But does it succeed at being spooky, even after 12 years?Game: Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon / Luigi's Mansion 2
Systems: Nintendo 3DS
Release Dates: 3/20/13 (JP), 3/24/13 (NA), 3/28/13 (EU and AUS), 7/18/13 (KOR), 7/26/13 (HK)
Developers: Next Level Games / Nintendo SPD
Who You Gonna Call?
Story: King Boo has shattered the Dark Moon crystal, which keeps all the ghosts at peace. But since it’s been broken, all the ghosts now seem to be haunting the surrounding mansions in Evershade Valley. Professor E. Gadd calls in Luigi to investigate the mansions and recover the shattered Dark Moon crystals.
Luigi The Ghostbuster is Here!
Gameplay: You get to play as Luigi and explore the haunted mansions. There are a few levels to do for each mansion. So some of the objectives are to either find an item around the mansion or to exterminate a ghost.
Alright the game isn’t that face paced, I’ll say that now. It’s basically looking around the mansions and trying to find ways to get into locked rooms.
Luigi has his trusty Poltergust 5000 to catch some ghosts. Alongside with him is a DS-like communication device where Professor E. Gadd can call you and tell you / give you advice for what you are doing in the mission. Luigi also has a flashlight that he can charge up and release to stun ghosts and capture them.
You can use your Poltergust 5000 or just about anything. Sucking up ghosts, money, items, and more. Capturing ghosts however, can be pretty tricky and you gotta be fast on your feet. When trying to suck in the ghost, you have to hold back the circle pad to make Luigi back up and suck in the ghost in under 10 seconds.
At the end of each mission, your score will be tallied up by how many ghosts you captured, money you got, and if you found some of the Dark Moon crystal bits too.
It’s So Scary in 3D!
Graphics: Here’s a little fun fact about the original Luigi’s Mansion. Nintendo wanted the game to be in 3D (like you’d have to wear 3D glasses to play the game). But it would’ve been expensive to do so they left it. Which is probably a reason why Dark Moon is on the 3DS.
The graphics are are pretty good. All of the movements look really good and bright and colorful. And when you turn on the 3D, it looks even cooler.
Who’s There?
Music: The soundtrack here is pretty okay. After a while, the music that plays in the mansions can get a little old after hearing it over and over again. And some of it isn’t quite memorable either.
Music is composed by Chad York, Darren Radtke, and Mike Peacock.
Is It Worth Going in There?
Overall: Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon is a pretty good game. It’s not a favorite of mine but it’s still playable in my book. One complaint I do have is that you can’t save in the middle of a mission and that you have to start over if you’re done playing the game. Which sucks because these missions can take quite a while to do (passing the 30 minute mark).
