SEGA Fans Chronicles - Chapter VIII: Sonic Remix

Welcome to another chapter of the SEGA Fans Chronicles. This week we go back to a time when a young lady had the idea to create a music station dedicated entirely to Sonic the Hedgehog music. That young lady is Sonic Remix...

CHAPTER VII: SONIC REMIX

Who? Shayne "Sonic Remix" Thames Edwards
Where?
    E-Mail: sonicremix[a]sonicradio[dot]net
    Twitter: @sonic_radio
Why? Sonic fan extraordinaire, Sonic Radio founder and DJ, artist, Sonicanime.net owner, extremely photogenic person standing next to Yuji Naka in the picture above!
SEGA Fan since… she was 7 and first played Sonic the Hedgehog.
Favourite SEGA game: Shadow the Hedgehog
Favourite SEGA console: Dreamcast

KC: Hi there! It's a real pleasure to have the opportunity to talk to you. First of all, please tell us a bit about yourself.
Sonic Remix: Where do I start? Hah, well, first and foremost, I am a HUGE Sonic fan. I was born and raised in Florida, where I lived for 26 years before moving to California in 2011 when I married my beloved Shadow Remix! I consider myself an artist, where I love drawing Sonic comics, but I also been expanding into animated media as of late. I love designing stuff, especially when it comes to Sonic the Hedgehog stuff!

KC: I first "met" you through the Sonicanime.net community. It was always a very friendly and tight community. Was that your
first project?
SR: Believe it or not, no! Before SonicAnime.net, I ran SonicUnderground.net, a once prominent site for all things Sonic Underground, much similar to SonicAnime.net. Before that, I dabbled in other website projects and other things, among which was Sonic Radio and SonicTeam.com

KC: Can you tell us more about the unique concept behind Sonicanime?
SR: SonicAnime.net was to be the followup project after SonicUnderground.net wound down. I was already running that site for nearly four years, and things had died down after the show had ran its course. When I heard about a new Sonic anime cartoon that was announced, I jumped ALL over that! I registered SonicAnime.net because the anime's name at the time had NOT been announced. I took any news I discovered about the anime, used a translator, and provided an English page for people to find out more about this show. From there, things just took off!

KC: Why did you feel the need to create Sonic Radio and Sonicanime? In other words, why did you feel you had to contribute to the community in such a way?
SR: Sonic Radio, my very first project, had been made because I wanted there to be a Sonic themed radio station, cause, back in 1998, there was no RadioSEGA, no SEGASonic Radio! I wanted people to be able to hear Sonic themed shows and music!

KC: Sonic Radio will be 14 years old this December! That's a long time running! How did it all start?
SR: I was also inspired by a syndicated radio station network called "Radio Ahhs!", a children's radio station that predated "Radio Disney" (Radio Ahhs pretty much went out of business after Radio Disney entered the scene). Radio Ahhs had three particular shows I loved listening to on Sundays, one was a music show that played former countdown songs in the past, the second was a radio drama mystery program, and the last one was "Radio Ahhs Countdown", a countdown program of the top 20 requested songs of the past week.
I wanted to do something similar to kick off my idea for playing Sonic music for people to listen to.
Being only one person, the best I could do to organize such programs was to rip and play the audio from "Sonic SatAM" for the radio drama, which was known as "The Sonic R Show", and I organized an online vote for people to decide the top 5 songs for "The Sonic R Countdown"

KC: Do you have anything in store for Sonic R's 14th birthday?
SR: Well, at the moment, we're working with RadioSEGA to organize a community remix album, which will come in fairly close to Sonic Radio's anniversary. But we may plan for more soon.

KC: Let's talk about Sonic R's shows. One that I find really interesting is The Sonic R Challenge. I believe you don't call it a show but an "event". Can you explain the concept behind this?
SR: I wanted to challenge remixers to try and remix certain Sonic songs, especially if they could do so in a certain style, because I don't usually hear such remixes coming out in such styles. I never got any replies, but I have reissued a 'series' of challenges for the upcoming community album. I really hope people respond to it!

KC: You also have the Sonic R Show which is being dualcasted on both the Sonic R and RadioSEGA streams. What can listeners expect of this?
SR: The Sonic R Show is our Saturday morning program here in the states. As ForeverSonic puts it, its the UK's "Late Late Late Afternoon Breakfast Show"! Each week, we try to tackle a new theme for the show. Such as a "SatAM" themed show, or a "Sonic Paradox Remix Album" show. Shadow Remix shares some of his jokes, we have news on there, and so forth.

KC: You have also been streaming the Sonic R TV show. For anyone that hasn't heard of this before, what's that about? I hear you've been having your fair share of special guests...
SR: Sonic R TV is our attempt to Livestream Sonic based content, based on the videos of community fans! These could be music videos, animated shorts, How to Draws, Lets Plays and so forth. We would like to see people submit content for the station!

KC: On a more personal note, since when have you been a SEGA fan? Did it all start with Sonic? (Now would be the time you'd say it started with Opa Opa and break this interview... XD)
SR: It's ALWAYS been about Sonic, to be perfectly honest. That little blue hedgehog has always caught my imagination ever since he first came out, I was 7 years old then! I was about 13 when I became a MUCH more devoted fan of the series.

KC: What's your favourite SEGA game?
SR: Shadow the Hedgehog.
Don't look at me like that. I'm not kidding, its the best game ever, especially when you play it on the Gamecube! XD
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle comes in a close second though!

KC: Besides Sonic, do you have a soft spot for any other SEGA franchises?
SR: Phantasy Star Online. My favorite is Episodes 1 & 2 for the Gamecube, I played it for HOURS. I even got 2 Tails chao from the online missions!
Also, I used to have a TON of Dreamcast games that were not Sonic related. Space Channel 5, Chu Chu Rocket, Skies of Arcadia, Pen Pen TriIcelon, Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour.

KC: What about other videogame franchises? Anything Nintendo or Sony?
SR: I used to play a LOT of Gamecube games, that was a console I bought the day it came out. Super Smash Brothers Melee, Super Mario Sunshine, Star Fox Adventures, and even older Nintendo games like Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64. Also, was playing Pokémon for the longest time. Pokémon Yellow was my first Pokémon game.
As for Sony, the only real game I enjoyed for PS2 was Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts 2. ESPECIALLY 2.

KC: What's your favourite SEGA console?
SR: Dude, Dreamcast was the BEST ERA EVER. I had a Dreamcast since it came out in the states on 9-9-99, and I even played it BEFORE it was released, when Hollywood Video had exclusive rights to rent out the Dreamcast and games from July 15th, 1999 onwards. I would play Sonic Adventure and Power Stone.

KC: If you were going to a desert island and could only take one soundtrack to any SEGA game with you, what would it be and why? Obviously, you would have something to play the music on, in case you're wondering!
SR: "Blue Blur: Sonic Generations Official Soundtrack" because you get a mix of old and new Sonic songs from every era =)

KC: Now, it's time for... QUICK SHOTS! (Disclaimer: RadioSEGA does not approve of drinking while driving or driving while drinking for that matter. We cannot be held responsible if you end up getting wasted.)
SR: And I will personally shoot ANYONE who drinks and drives ;)

    Sonic or Mario? SONIC
Gameboy or Game Gear? Game Gear
Sonic 06 or Tails' Sky Patrol? Tails' Sky Patrol -- KC Edit: Ouch! XD
Sonic SatAM or Sonic Underground? Sonic Underground
Sonic X or Sonic SatAM? Sonic X
    PS3 or Xbox 360? Xbox 360

    Finally...
Sonic Radio or... RadioSEGA? Haha! Just kidding!

KC: A few months ago, you put together a little something called "Sonic Fan Music Festival". What was that and how did it come to mind?
SR: As a Sonic radio station, I wanted to do something to celebrate Sonic's 21st anniversary. I realized how many great remixers there were in the community and wanted to celebrate the achievements of such a community and how they love Sonic and Sonic music! The Fan Music Festival made the most sense to do!

KC: I hope one day we can listen to a podcast version of that... If only a certain lazy podcaster would get to work...
What is it about Sonic music you find so appealing?
SR: Sonic music seems to cover all my favorite genres of music, especially rock and orchestra!

KC: Do you have any other activities, hobbies or future projects you wish to share with us?
SR: It's my mission to help out people in the Sonic community! I used to host sites like Sonic Stadium, SonicVerse Team, Sonic United, helped out with other sites like Sonic HQ, TSSZ News, always glad to help out RadioSEGA. I want to be able to organize events that will unite the Sonic community closer together.
Did I also mention I used to own SonicTeam.com? True story! In fact, Sonic Radio first started out on SonicTeam.com - http://web.archive.org/web/19991008092143/http://www.sonicteam.com/sonicr/
I got a story to tell you regarding this =)
In March of 2000, I had came home from school to find this big box sitting in the hallway, with my name on it, from JAPAN. I open up the box, and it was filled with Sonic Adventure plushies. Holy crap i was in shock, and I saw a letter. I opened up the letter:

....HOLY CRAP I had to say yes! I was so honored and grateful, so I just signed over the site to him. After that, SEGA of America kept in contact with me, sending me more awesome Sonic stuff.
People would still ask me why i didn't ask for money. DUDE I was only 15 at the time, and a huge Sonic fan. They gave me hundreds of dollars in merchandise, I'm pretty sure they more than compensated, and I loved it!
Years later that letter would find its way back to Mr. Naka himself, at Sonic Boom 2011 in Los Angeles, CA.
I had seen him walking around the floor, and while my camera guy was busy taking pictures of Sonic Retro staff, who were there at the time, I approached Mr. Naka with the letter in my hand (I had the letter with me because I wanted to show people what happened all those years ago!). I was shaking so bad. It took him a few minutes to look over the letter, and when he finally realized who i was, his face lit up and he wanted to get a picture with me!

The picture he later tweeted

Meanwhile, I wanted to get a picture, but my friend with the camera was nowhere to be seen, and I was in a panic. A voice behind me says "What does your friend look like?" and, without looking up, I was still in a panic, I tried to describe him. The voice spoke again "You don't recognize me, do you?" I FINALLY looked up...it was Svend! We had a hug and it was awesome and I was so happy to see my friends, meet my idol's creator, see Crush 40 in concert, it was a GREAT night for me...
...almost.
That night would of been complete if Shadow Remix had been with me (He was out at sea during that week, poor guy!)

KC: Wow! That's the story behind sonicteam.com then? Pretty interesting!
Thanks again for your time, Sonic Remix! We wish you all the best with your future endeavours, and we'll be keeping an eye on Sonic R TV and both ears on Sonic Radio!
SR: Thanks KC!

There you have it! Go and have a listen to Sonic Radio AND you can do it every Saturday at 4pm UK time here on RadioSEGA too!
That's it for this week's edition of the SEGA Fans Chronicles. Join us next week as we write another chapter of this epic feature. Here's a little hint: you have 100 reasons to do so... All will be revealed next week.
